TL;DR: The Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications (MERRA) was undertaken by NASA's Global Modeling and Assimilation Office with two primary objectives: to place observations from NASA's Earth Observing System satellites into a climate context and to improve upon the hydrologic cycle represented in earlier generations of reanalyses as mentioned in this paper.
Stratospheric Analysis and Forecasting in the Northern Winter of 1999/2000: The NASA DAO's GEOS-3 System
Steven Pawson,David J. Lamich,Andrea Ledvina,Robert A. Lucchesi,Tommy Owens,Paul A. Newman,Robert Atlas +6 more
TL;DR: In this article, an evaluation of the performance in the northern winter 1999/2000 of the GEOS-3 troposphere-stratosphere data assimilation system (DAS) is presented, and the impacts of the two main input data types are assessed: upper-air soundings (sondes) provide wind and temperature information and satellite based (Tiros Operational Vertical Sounders: TOVS) give estimates of the thermal structure.
