The authors discuss high-voltage power conversion. Conventional series connection and three-level voltage source inverter techniques are reviewed and compared. A novel versatile multilevel commutation cell is introduced: it is shown that this topology is safer and more simple to control, and delivers purer output waveforms. The authors show how this technique can be applied to either choppers or voltage-source inverters and generalized to any number of switches.<<ETX>>

Multi-level conversion : high voltage choppers and voltage-source inverters

Multilevel inverters (MLIs) are being used in wide range of power electronic applications. These converters have attracted a lot of attention during recent years and exist in different topologies with similar basic concepts. This paper presents five main submodules (SMs) to be used as the basic structures of MLIs. The paper reviews the common MLI topologies from the structural point of view. The topologies are divided into the different SMs to show conventional MLI configurations and future topologies that can be created from the main SMs. A comparative study between different topologies is performed in detail. The MLIs are categorized and investigated with from different perspectives such as the number of components, the ability to create inherent negative voltage, working in regeneration mode and using single dc source.

A General Review of Multilevel Inverters Based on Main Submodules: Structural Point of View

Recently multilevel inverters (MLI) have attracted more attention in research and industry, as they are changing into a viable technology for several applications. The concept of MLI was introduced for high power and high/medium voltage applications as they can provide an effective interface with renewable energy sources. Developing of reduced switch MLI topology has been a rapid research topic since the past decade, which has not been reviewed so far. Therefore, this review article focuses on the different reduced switch MLI topologies under three categories such as symmetric, asymmetric and hybrid configurations. The important knowledge on these topologies is carefully tabulated based on the three categories in the comparison tables to understand the essential parameters of the MLI topologies. These configurations are not only generating higher voltage levels to improve the power quality but also to reduce the passive filter requirements. Also, this review includes a detailed perspective of various modulation techniques and control strategies for MLI topologies. In addition to that, the different performance parameters of MLI and its calculation methods are discussed with appropriate mathematical expression. This review will help in the selection of appropriate MLI topology for FACTS, motor drives and renewable applications.

A comprehensive review on reduced switch multilevel inverter topologies, modulation techniques and applications

Achieving high efficiency and high power density features of intermediate bus converter (IBC) in data center application is very critical. This paper proposes a nonisolated switched-tank dc–dc converter (STC) to meet the high requirement of IBC. The proposed STC has fixed voltage conversion ratio. Theoretical analysis provides the guideline for designing resonant tank and nonresonant tank as well as selecting proper deadtime for the proposed circuit. With resonant operation feature of the proposed circuit, zero current switching is realized on all switching devices to help the high-efficiency operation of the proposed converter. Through the proposed design methodology in this paper, power loss on switching devices and planar inductors can be minimized. In addition, detailed power loss analysis and breakdown provide hints for further efficiency improvement. Simulation has been performed to validate the operating principle of the proposed STC. A designed 6x STC (450 W nominal/600 W maximum) based on eGaNFETs is demonstrated. With 54 V typical input voltage, the output of the 6x STC is 9 V. The GaN-based prototype achieves a peak efficiency of 98.55%. Also, it achieves 97.18% efficiency and 750 W/in3 power density at 450 W.

A 98.55% Efficiency Switched-Tank Converter for Data Center Application

In this paper, a new nonisolated high step-up dc–dc converter is proposed. Active–passive inductor cells (APICs) are used to extend the topology. The ability to achieve high gains is the main merit of the proposed topology. The proposed converter operates based on parallel charging and series discharging of the inductors. The converter also achieves high step-up voltage gain with appropriate duty cycle and low voltage and current stress on the power switches and diodes. The proposed converter is analyzed in operation modes. The main parameters of the converter such as voltage gain, voltage stress of semiconductor devices are calculated to compare with other structures. Considering the output voltage ripple and filter size, the proposed converter is designed. Moreover, the losses and efficiency of the converter are calculated. The performance of the proposed converter is validated by experimental results.

Extendable Nonisolated High Gain DC–DC Converter Based on Active–Passive Inductor Cells

The conventional unified power-flow controller (UPFC) that consists of two back-to-back inverters requires bulky and often complicated zigzag transformers for isolation and reaching high voltage. This paper proposes a completely transformer-less UPFC based on an innovative configuration of two cascade multilevel inverters (CMIs). The unique configuration and control of the two CMIs as a power-flow controller make it possible to independently control active and reactive power flows over a line. The new UPFC offers several advantages over the traditional technology, such as transformer-less, light weight, high efficiency, high reliability, low cost, and fast dynamic response. The transformer-less UPFC is thereby very suited for fast and distributed power flow control, such as wind and solar power transmission. Experimental results based on 13.8-kV/2-MV·A transformer-less UPFC prototype are shown to validate the theoretical analysis and operating principle.

Transformer-Less Unified Power-Flow Controller Using the Cascade Multilevel Inverter

In this paper, a modulation and control method for the new transformerless unified power flow controller (UPFC) is presented. As is well known, the conventional UPFC that consists of two back-to-back inverters requires bulky and often complicated zigzag transformers for isolation and reaching high power rating with desired voltage waveforms. To overcome this problem, a completely transformerless UPFC based on an innovative configuration of two cascade multilevel inverters has been proposed. The new UPFC offers several advantages over the traditional technology, such as transformerless, light weight, high efficiency, low cost and fast dynamic response. This paper focuses on the modulation and control for this new transformerless UPFC, including optimized fundamental frequency modulation for low total harmonic distortion and high efficiency, independent active and reactive power control over the transmission line, dc-link voltage balance control, etc. The new UPFC with proposed control method is verified by experiments based on 4160-V test setup. Both the steady-state and dynamic-response results will be shown in this paper.

Modulation and Control of Transformerless UPFC

Gate oxide in power metal–oxide–semiconductor field effect transistors (MOSFETs) degrades over time The degradation leads to an accumulation of oxide-trapped charges within the gate oxide and an accumulation of interface-trapped charges at the oxide–semiconductor surface of power MOSFETs Overtime, such charges significantly alter the electrical parameters of power MOSFETs; to observe this, the electrical parameters are utilized as precursors of gate-oxide degradation The purpose of this paper is threefold: 1) to propose a new online precursor of gate-oxide degradation—the gate plateau time; 2) to demonstrate a simultaneous dip-and-rebound variation pattern of four precursors of gate-oxide degradation: threshold voltage, gate plateau voltage, gate plateau time, and on-resistance; and 3) to compare the shift tendencies of each precursor over the course of gate-oxide degradation The existing studies of gate-oxide degradation mechanisms and their effects on threshold voltage and mobility reduction were extended to correlate a variation of all four precursors using analytical expressions The variation patterns were experimentally verified using high-electric field stressing in two different commercial power MOSFETs The new precursor, the gate plateau time, was found to be a competitive gate-oxide degradation precursor, as it had a higher positive shift than threshold voltage and gate plateau voltage In addition, the threshold voltage was found to be the most sensitive indicator of the negative shift (dip), while the on-resistance and gate plateau time were found to be the most sensitive indicators of the positive shift (rebound)

Effect of Gate-Oxide Degradation on Electrical Parameters of Power MOSFETs

High gain bidirectional dc–dc converter with high efficiency and high power density is a much desired circuit in any converter/inverter system. It is well known that switched capacitor circuits that are variants of the Dickson converter are suitable candidates for such a system. Modular design, absence of external magnetic components, and high efficiency are some of the features that make them suitable candidates. But, the inability to provide fractional and variable voltage gains at high efficiency during normal operation severely limits their application. It also leads to higher voltage stress in the overall system. The aim of this paper is twofold. First, a generalized modular switched capacitor converter, the “( n / m )X converter,” which is a variant of the original Dickson converter is introduced. Using this generalized configuration, the converter can be designed for a required fractional gain. Next, two different methods to enable dynamic variation in gain with high efficiency using the ( n / m )X converter are proposed. Detailed analysis, design steps, equivalent circuits, and experimental results for a 1 kW prototype of a variable (4/0.5)X boost converter validate the proposed theory. A peak measured efficiency of over 95% is achieved for the prototype. The design framework and analysis in this paper can be extended to a generic ( n / m )X converter.

A Variable (n/m)X Switched Capacitor DC–DC Converter

In this paper, the application of an innovative transformer-less unified power flow controller (UPFC) for interconnecting two synchronous ac grids with large phase difference is presented. The proposed transformer-less UPFC is based on two cascaded multilevel inverters. As is well known, the real power flow between two generators is mainly determined by their phase difference. If two grids with large phase difference are initially separate from each other, once connected, there will be huge current flowing through the transmission line and will, thus, damage the generators or other supplementary equipments. Therefore, to connect two synchronous ac grids with each other without using an extra device is impossible. For decades, researchers have been investigating different approaches to this problem but still difficult to conquer, especially for real hardware implementation. An effective solution using the transformer-less UPFC is demonstrated in this paper. The transformer-less UPFC can realize grid interconnection, independent active and reactive power control, dc-link voltage balance control, etc. Furthermore, a 1-pu equipment can compensate system with phase difference as large as 30°. Experimental results based on the 13.8-kV/ 2-MVA transformer-less UPFC prototype are shown to validate the theoretical analysis.
