The term ‘‘Internet-of-Things’’ is used as an umbrella keyword for covering various aspects related to the extension of the Internet and the Web into the physical realm, by means of the widespread deployment of spatially distributed devices with embedded identification, sensing and/or actuation capabilities. Internet-of-Things envisions a future in which digital and physical entities can be linked, by means of appropriate information and communication technologies, to enable a whole new class of applications and services. In this article, we present a survey of technologies, applications and research challenges for Internetof-Things.

Production workflow: concepts and techniques

Background--By leveraging cloud services, organizations can deploy their software systems over a pool of resources. However, organizations heavily depend on their business-critical systems, which have been developed over long periods. These legacy applications are usually deployed on-premise. In recent years, research in cloud migration has been carried out. However, there is no secondary study to consolidate this research. Objective--This paper aims to identify, taxonomically classify, and systematically compare existing research on cloud migration. Method--We conducted a systematic literature review (SLR) of 23 selected studies, published from 2010 to 2013. We classified and compared the selected studies based on a characterization framework that we also introduce in this paper. Results--The research synthesis results in a knowledge base of current solutions for legacy-to-cloud migration. This review also identifies research gaps and directions for future research. Conclusion--This review reveals that cloud migration research is still in early stages of maturity, but is advancing. It identifies the needs for a migration framework to help improving the maturity level and consequently trust into cloud migration. This review shows a lack of tool support to automate migration tasks. This study also identifies needs for architectural adaptation and self-adaptive cloud-enabled systems.

Cloud Migration Research: A Systematic Review

The migration of existing applications to the Cloud requires adapting them to a new computing paradigm. Existing works have focused on migrating the whole application stack by means of virtualization and deployment on the Cloud, delegating the required adaptation effort to the level of resource management. With the proliferation of Cloud services allowing for more flexibility and better control over the application migration, the migration of individual application layers, or even individual architectural components to the Cloud, becomes possible. Towards this goal, in this work we focus on the challenges and solutions for each layer when migrating different parts of the application to the Cloud. We categorize different migration types and identify the potential impact and adaptation needs for each of these types on the application layers based on an exhaustive survey of the State of the Art. We also investigate various cross-cutting concerns that need to be considered for the migration of the application, and position them with respect to the identified migration types. Finally, we present some of the open research issues in the field and position our future work targeting these research questions.

In an environment of constant change and variation driven by competition and innovation, a software service can rarely remain stable. Being able to manage and control the evolution of services is therefore an important goal for the Service-Oriented paradigm. This work extends existing and widely adopted theories from software engineering, programming languages, service-oriented computing, and other related fields to provide the fundamental ingredients required to guarantee that spurious results and inconsistencies that may occur due to uncontrolled service changes are avoided. The paper provides a unifying theoretical framework for controlling the evolution of services that deals with structural, behavioral, and QoS level-induced service changes in a type-safe manner, ensuring correct versioning transitions so that previous clients can use a versioned service in a consistent manner.

On the Evolution of Services

Services are subject to constant change and variation, leading to continuous redesign and improvement. However, service changes shouldn't be disruptive by requiring radical modifications or by altering the way that business is conducted. In this article, we discuss a causal model of service changes that addresses the effects of both shallow and deep changes. This article is largely based on concepts and definitions found in previous work. The definitions used have been revised and amended on the basis of formalization and compatibility analysis, prototype implementation, comparison with functionality offered by open standards, and an empirical in depth investigation using an industrial strength case study.

Managing Evolving Services

The ability to cope with multiple competing stakeholders, fluid requirements, emergent behavior, and susceptibility to external pressures that can cause changes across an entire organization, coupled with the ability to support service diversification, is a key to an enterprise's competitiveness. Web services equip enterprises with the potential to react to change by addressing two interrelated sets of requirements: the ability to accommodate service changes that demand rapid response and to support service variation according to customers' needs and requirements. In this paper we introduce the concept of service evolution management, which provides an understanding of change impact, service changes control, tracking and auditing of service versions, and status accounting. To achieve this, we develop a formal model and theory for service evolution that allows multiple active service versions to be created consistently and co-exist, while executing schema changes effectively.
