I have developed "tennis elbow" from lugging this book around the past four weeks, but it is worth the pain, the effort, and the aspirin. It is also worth the (relatively speaking) bargain price. Including appendixes, this book contains 894 pages of text. The entire panorama of the neural sciences is surveyed and examined, and it is comprehensive in its scope, from genomes to social behaviors. The editors explicitly state that the book is designed as "an introductory text for students of biology, behavior, and medicine," but it is hard to imagine any audience, interested in any fragment of neuroscience at any level of sophistication, that would not enjoy this book. Research summary: This article provides a review of real options theory (ROT) in strategic management research. We review the fundamentals of ROT and provide a taxonomy of this research. By synthesizing and critiquing research on real options, we identify a number of important challenges as well as opportunities for ROT if it is to enhance its impact on strategic management and potentially develop into a theoretical pillar in the field. We examine how ROT can inform the key tensions that managers face between commitment versus flexibility as well as between competition versus cooperation, and we show how it can uniquely address the fundamental issues in strategy. We conclude with suggestions on future research directions that could enhance and unify the thus-far distinct main approaches to real options research.

Managerial summary: Real options theory (ROT) applies the heuristics and valuation models originally designed for financial securities to the domain of corporate investment decisions (e.g., joint ventures [JVs], foreign direct investment, research and development [R&D], etc.) and strategic decision making under uncertainty. This article provides a synthesis of this body of research in strategic management and related disciplines. We suggest how ROT can address fundamental issues of strategy, including the dilemmas managers face between commitment versus flexibility as well as between competition versus cooperation. We discuss how three distinct approaches to real options analysis can complement each other, and we identify some of the main challenges and opportunities for ROT to become a theoretical pillar in strategy. Firm Scale and the Endogenous Timing of Entry: a Choice between Commitment and Flexibility

Contexte : Le Corynebacterium acnes est un organisme relativement avirulent qui fait partie de la flore cutanee normale. On considere que la plupart des isolats de patients sont des contaminants. Cependant chez un petit sous-groupe de patients, particulierement apres une neurochirurgie, ce microorganisme peut causer des infections importantes. Nous revoyons notre experience sur une periode de 5 ans de l'infection a C. acnes et de son traitement apres une neurochirurgie crânienne. Methodes : Nous avons identifie les patients dont la culture demontrait la presence de C. acnes entre 1996 et 2001 au moyen d'une revue de la base de donnees du laboratoire de microbiologie de la region sanitaire de Saskatoon. 141 cultures positives ont ete identifiees, dont six provenaient de patients ayant subi une neurochirurgie. Nous avons effectue une revue de la litterature sur les infections a C. acnes du SNC. Resultats : Tous les patients avaient subi une craniotomie ou un trou de trepan et un patient avait recu de la radiotherapie avant l'intervention. Il n'y avait pas de cas relie a une derivation ventriculo-peritoneale. Les patients ont tous presente un gonflement du cuir chevelu et trois presentaient un ecoulement purulent. Les symptomes sont survenus plus de 2 mois apres la chirurgie chez cinq des six patients alors que chez l'autre ils sont survenus trois ans plus tard. Tous les patients ont recu le meme traitement, soit l'ablation du volet osseux avec antibiotherapie par voie parenterale suivie, dans la plupart des cas, d'antibiotherapie par voie orale. Cinq patients ont bien repondu au traitement, sans recidive. Un patient a eu une recidive apres une cranioplastie. Conclusions : Le C. acnes est une cause d'infection rare mais importante apres la craniotomie. Le debridement et l'ablation du volet osseux ainsi qu'une antibiotherapie adequate assurent la guerison chez la majorite des patients.

Manipulated Nash Equilibria I: Forward Induction and Thought Process Dynamics in Extensive Form

This paper examines a two-period principal and agent model where the agent's ability level is not observable to the principal and revealed to the agent only after the contract is signed. The value of the agent's output to the principal is affected by the agent's collegiality which is unknown to the agent but is observed by the principal. In these circumstances, with risk-neutral agents, the principal prefers a 'probationary scheme' with second-period rehiring based on satisfactory first-period performance. Multiple equilibria results from this problem. However, the refinements literature provides a resolution to the multiplicity. Under certain conditions the agent is rehired for sufficiently high first-period output; the superior agent will work harder in the first period than under recontracting, and the inferior type agent will work less hard. The probationary scheme is shown to be Pareto superior to standard recontracting.
