The Mars Organic Molecule Analyzer (MOMA) Instrument: Characterization of Organic Material in Martian Sediments
Fred Goesmann,William B. Brinckerhoff,François Raulin,Walter Goetz,Ryan M. Danell,Stephanie Getty,Sandra Siljeström,Helge Mißbach,Harald Steininger,Ricardo Arevalo,Arnaud Buch,Caroline Freissinet,Andrej Grubisic,Andrej Grubisic,Uwe J. Meierhenrich,Veronica Pinnick,Fabien Stalport,Cyril Szopa,Jorge L. Vago,Robert Lindner,Mitchell D. Schulte,John Robert Brucato,Daniel P. Glavin,Noël Grand,Xiang Li,Xiang Li,Friso H. W. van Amerom +26 more
TL;DR: The Mars Organic Molecule Analyzer instrument onboard the ESA/Roscosmos ExoMars rover (to launch in July, 2020) will analyze volatile and refractory organic compounds in martian surface and subsurface sediments.
Journal ArticleDOI
MOMA: the challenge to search for organics and biosignatures on Mars
Walter Goetz,William B. Brinckerhoff,Ricardo Arevalo,Caroline Freissinet,Stephanie Getty,Daniel P. Glavin,Sandra Siljeström,Arnaud Buch,Fabien Stalport,Andrej Grubisic,Xiaojian Li,Veronica Pinnick,Ryan M. Danell,F. H. W. van Amerom,Fred Goesmann,Harald Steininger,Noël Grand,François Raulin,Cyril Szopa,Uwe J. Meierhenrich,John Robert Brucato +20 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe strategies to search for, detect, and identify organic material on the surface and subsurface of Mars, including those applied by landed missions in the past and those that will be applied in the future.
Journal ArticleDOI
Mars Organic Molecule Analyzer (MOMA) laser desorption/ionization source design and performance characterization.
Xiang Li,Ryan M. Danell,Veronica Pinnick,Andrej Grubisic,Friso H. W. van Amerom,Ricardo Arevalo,Stephanie Getty,William B. Brinckerhoff,Adrian E. Southard,Zachary D. Gonnsen,Tomoko Adachi +10 more
TL;DR: Advanced analytical capabilities like Stored Waveform Inverse Fourier Transform (SWIFT) for selected ion ejection and tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) are realized in LDI-MS mode, and enable the isolation and enhancement of specific mass ranges and structural analysis, respectively.
Journal ArticleDOI
Influence of trace aromatics on the chemical growth mechanisms of Titan aerosol analogues
Thomas Gautier,Thomas Gautier,Joshua A. Sebree,Xiang Li,Xiang Li,Veronica Pinnick,Veronica Pinnick,Andrej Grubisic,Andrej Grubisic,Mark J. Loeffler,Stephanie Getty,Melissa G. Trainer,William B. Brinckerhoff +12 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the effect of trace aromatics on the chemical composition and formation pathways of laboratory analogues of Titan's organic aerosols was studied, revealing that the final chemical structure of the aerosols depends strongly on the number of aromatic rings in the trace molecule, leading either to a polymeric or to a random co-polymeric growth of the sample.
Journal ArticleDOI
Detection of trace organics in Mars analog samples containing perchlorate by laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry.
Xiang Li,Ryan M. Danell,William B. Brinckerhoff,Veronica Pinnick,Friso H. W. van Amerom,Ricardo Arevalo,Stephanie Getty,Paul R. Mahaffy,Harald Steininger,Fred Goesmann +9 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that the detection of nonvolatile organics in selected spiked mineral-matrix materials by laser desorption/ionization (LDI) mass spectrometry is not inhibited by the presence of up to 1 wt % perchlorate salt.
