Terrestrial laser scanning in forest inventories
Xinlian Liang,Xinlian Liang,Ville Kankare,Ville Kankare,Juha Hyyppä,Juha Hyyppä,Yunsheng Wang,Yunsheng Wang,Antero Kukko,Antero Kukko,Antero Kukko,Henrik Haggrén,Xiaowei Yu,Xiaowei Yu,Harri Kaartinen,Anttoni Jaakkola,Anttoni Jaakkola,Fengying Guan,Markus Holopainen,Markus Holopainen,Mikko Vastaranta,Mikko Vastaranta +21 more
TL;DR: In this article, the advances of applying terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) in forest inventories, discusses its properties with reference to other related techniques and discusses the future prospects of this technique.
Journal ArticleDOI
Individual tree biomass estimation using terrestrial laser scanning
Ville Kankare,Markus Holopainen,Mikko Vastaranta,Eetu Puttonen,Xiaowei Yu,Juha Hyyppä,Matti Vaaja,Hannu Hyyppä,Hannu Hyyppä,Petteri Alho +9 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed the use of stem curve and crown size geometric measurements from TLS data as a basis for allometric biomass models rather than statistical three-dimensional point metrics, since TLS statistical metrics are dependent on various scanning parameters and tree neighbourhood characteristics.
Journal ArticleDOI
International benchmarking of terrestrial laser scanning approaches for forest inventories
Xinlian Liang,Juha Hyyppä,Harri Kaartinen,Harri Kaartinen,Matti Lehtomäki,Jiri Pyörälä,Jiri Pyörälä,Norbert Pfeifer,Markus Holopainen,Markus Holopainen,Gábor Brolly,Pirotti Francesco,Jan Hackenberg,Jan Hackenberg,Huabing Huang,Hyun-Woo Jo,Masato Katoh,Luxia Liu,Martin Mokroš,Jules Morel,Kenneth Olofsson,Jose Poveda-Lopez,Jan Trochta,Di Wang,Jinhu Wang,Zhouxi Xi,Bisheng Yang,Guang Zheng,Ville Kankare,Ville Kankare,Ville Luoma,Ville Luoma,Xiaowei Yu,Liang Chen,Mikko Vastaranta,Mikko Vastaranta,Mikko Vastaranta,Ninni Saarinen,Ninni Saarinen,Yunsheng Wang +39 more
TL;DR: The main objectives of this benchmarking study are to evaluate the potential of applying TLS in characterizing forests, to clarify the strengths and the weaknesses of TLS as a measure of forest digitization, and to reveal the capability of recent algorithms for tree-attribute extraction.
Journal ArticleDOI
Airborne laser scanning and digital stereo imagery measures of forest structure: comparative results and implications to forest mapping and inventory update
Mikko Vastaranta,Michael A. Wulder,Joanne C. White,Anssi Pekkarinen,Sakari Tuominen,Christian Ginzler,Ville Kankare,Markus Holopainen,Juha Hyyppä,Hannu Hyyppä +9 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the use of DSI-derived vertical information for capturing variations in forest structure and compare these results to those acquired using airborne laser scanning (ALS) was reported.
Journal ArticleDOI
Automated Stem Curve Measurement Using Terrestrial Laser Scanning
TL;DR: The results of this paper confirm the feasibility of using TLS to produce stem curve data in an automated, accurate and noninvasive way and indicate that the point cloud provides adequate information to accurately derive stem volumes from standing trees.
