Better stewardship of land is needed to achieve the Paris Climate Agreement goal of holding warming to below 2 °C; however, confusion persists about the specific set of land stewardship options available and their mitigation potential. To address this, we identify and quantify "natural climate solutions" (NCS): 20 conservation, restoration, and improved land management actions that increase carbon storage and/or avoid greenhouse gas emissions across global forests, wetlands, grasslands, and agricultural lands. We find that the maximum potential of NCS-when constrained by food security, fiber security, and biodiversity conservation-is 23.8 petagrams of CO2 equivalent (PgCO2e) y-1 (95% CI 20.3-37.4). This is ≥30% higher than prior estimates, which did not include the full range of options and safeguards considered here. About half of this maximum (11.3 PgCO2e y-1) represents cost-effective climate mitigation, assuming the social cost of CO2 pollution is ≥100 USD MgCO2e-1 by 2030. Natural climate solutions can provide 37% of cost-effective CO2 mitigation needed through 2030 for a >66% chance of holding warming to below 2 °C. One-third of this cost-effective NCS mitigation can be delivered at or below 10 USD MgCO2-1 Most NCS actions-if effectively implemented-also offer water filtration, flood buffering, soil health, biodiversity habitat, and enhanced climate resilience. Work remains to better constrain uncertainty of NCS mitigation estimates. Nevertheless, existing knowledge reported here provides a robust basis for immediate global action to improve ecosystem stewardship as a major solution to climate change.

Changes in planted forests and future global implications

Afforestation, the conversion of non-forested lands to forest plantations, can sequester atmospheric carbon dioxide, but the rapid growth and harvesting of biomass may deplete nutrients and degrade soils if managed improperly. The goal of this study is to evaluate how afforestation affects mineral soil quality, including pH, sodium, exchangeable cations, organic carbon, and nitrogen, and to examine the magnitude of these changes regionally where afforestation rates are high. We also examine potential mechanisms to reduce the impacts of afforestation on soils and to maintain long-term productivity. Across diverse plantation types (153 sites) to a depth of 30 cm of mineral soil, we observed significant decreases in nutrient cations (Ca, K, Mg), increases in sodium (Na), or both with afforestation. Across the data set, afforestation reduced soil concentrations of the macronutrient Ca by 29% on average (P , 0.05). Afforestation by Pinus alone decreased soil K by 23% (P , 0.05). Overall, plantations of all genera also led to a mean 71% increase of soil Na (P , 0.05). Mean pH decreased 0.3 units (P , 0.05) with afforestation. Afforestation caused a 6.7% and 15% (P , 0.05) decrease in soil C and N content respectively, though the effect was driven principally by Pinus plantations (15% and 20% decrease, P , 0.05). Carbon to nitrogen ratios in soils under plantations were 5.7-11.6% higher (P , 0.05). In several regions with high rates of afforestation, cumulative losses of N, Ca, and Mg are likely in the range of tens of millions of metric tons. The decreases indicate that trees take up considerable amounts of nutrients from soils; harvesting this biomass repeatedly could impair long-term soil fertility and productivity in some locations. Based on this study and a review of other literature, we suggest that proper site preparation and sustainable harvest practices, such as avoiding the removal or burning of harvest residue, could minimize the impact of afforestation on soils. These sustainable practices would in turn slow soil compaction, erosion, and organic matter loss, maintaining soil fertility to the greatest extent possible.

Silvicultural alternatives to conventional even-aged forest management - what limits global adoption?

Este artigo analisa a importância e relacao entre capital social e empreendedorismo. O capital social tem relacao direta com o nivel de confianca, participacao e cooperacao entre os diversos agentes de determinada regiao. O empreendedorismo e importante para estimular a geracao de emprego e inovacao. Assim, o capital social e o empreendedorismo sao elementos fundamentais para a dinamizacao do sistema economico-regional. Em contrapartida, regioes nas quais os empreendedores possuem maior confianca social (interpessoal e institucional) baseado num sistema de interacao mutua, compartilhando informacoes, conhecimento e aprendizagens, tendem a propiciar maiores oportunidades e empreendimentos mais competitivos, caracterizando-se como um cenario favoravel para a realizacao de investimentos.

O capital social e o empreendedorismo: notas de leituras

O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar os indicadores de competitividade no comercio exterior do produto mel natural, entre 2000 e 2011. Em 2000, o Brasil iniciou a insercao desse produto no mercado internacional, ganhando rapida projecao como pais exportador. No entanto, ainda ocupa posicao intermediaria entre os principais exportadores mundiais. O problema analisado neste estudo esta relacionado com a competitividade desse produto, no mercado, a partir de indicadores economicos. Os procedimentos metodologicos utilizados para verificar a competitividade foram o modelo constant market share e o indice de vantagem comparativa revelada (IVCR). Constatou-se que o quantum e o valor exportado apresentam tendencia de crescimento e de flutuacoes no mercado internacional. No periodo estudado, a China e a Argentina destacavam-se como os principais exportadores mundiais de mel natural e o Brasil era o setimo maior exportador. Conclui-se que o Pais apresenta competitividade no mercado externo de mel natural e padroes de eficiencia e de utilizacao de recursos semelhantes aos vigentes no mundo, alem de potencial para ampliar sua participacao, com um produto competitivo e diferenciado.

Análise da competitividade das exportações brasileiras de mel natural, segundo o modelo constant market share e o índice de vantagem comparativa revelada

Este trabalho teve como objetivo descrever a dinâmica das exportacoes do mel natural brasileiro no periodo de 2000 a 2011. Para o desenvolvimento deste artigo foi realizado o levantamento bibliografico sobre as exportacoes de mel natural utilizando fontes de consulta como: Sebrae, IBGE, sistema Aliceweb, dados do UNcomtrade. Tambem foi aplicada a metodologia Razao de concentracao para definir o grau de concentracao; para esse calculo utilizou-se a participacao dos quatro e oito maiores mercados internacionais brasileiros. Os resultados demonstraram que o Brasil saiu de um volume baixo de exportacoes para chegar no ano de 2011 ocupando o quinto lugar nas exportacoes mundiais, tendo como principais paises de destino, nomeadamente, os Estados Unidos, Alemanha, Reino Unido, Canada, Espanha e Belgica. Estados Unidos e Alemanha participaram com mais de 80% do total exportado pelo pais no periodo estudado, evidenciando uma alta concentracao de mercado, comprovada pela metodologia aplicada.

Dinâmica das Exportações de Mel Natural Brasileiro no Período de 2000 a 2011

O objetivo deste artigo foi analisar as caracteristicas das transacoes entre os agentes economicos, mapear seus atributos e verificar seus impactos sobre a estrutura de governanca da cadeia produtiva de energia de biomassa de origem florestal na regiao de Lages/ SC. Utilizou-se como suporte teorico a Economia dos Custos de Transacao (ECT). As informacoes foram obtidas por meio de entrevistas a quinze empresarios ou diretores de empresas, visando a identificacao e caracterizacao das transacoes entre os segmentos da cadeia e a analise da estrutura de governanca adotada pelos agentes. O estudo teve como area de abrangencia vinte e quatro municipios localizados na regiao. A analise das transacoes entre os agentes demonstrou a crescente busca pela realizacao de contratos, determinada, em grande parte, pela necessidade de garantia de suprimento de materia-prima. Esta estrutura de governanca tende a ser cada vez mais adotada pelos diferentes segmentos da cadeia produtiva, sobretudo, nas transacoes que envolvem os residuos, seja pela maior procura destes para geracao de energia ou pelo destino a usos mais nobres.

Análise das transações na cadeia produtiva de energia de biomassa de origem florestal

The "free access" to non-timber forest products raises several critical issues for both government and industry. In this way, a sustainable management of non-timber forest products is referred as an important strategy for the biodiversity conservation as well for income generation and a life quality enhancer of rural populations. The municipality of Guaratuba is encompassed by the Guaratuba Environmental Protection Area (EPA), where the traditional population lives and carries out the extractivism activity that is intrinsic to their customs. Therefore, this work aims to identify the limiting factors for the management of the non-timber forest products in the Atlantic Forest biome, on the coast of the state of Parana. The data collection was based on interviews with 70 families living in Guaratuba’s EPA, from the four management units: Morro Grande, Estrada do Castelhano, Caovi-Cubatao and Baia de Guaratuba. The data was submitted to SWOT analysis. Each community is heterogeneous in its productive system of use and commercialization of non-timber forest products. The evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses of the evaluated production systems indicates that the region of study is suitable for the development of activities with non-timber forest products. It is concluded that the sustainability of non-timber activity in the region is far from being achieved. Conservation programs should recognize that in the Environmental Protection Areas there is a high degree of human occupation, where opportunities for training, overcoming the lack of economic and basic health and infrastructure resources must be solved as a matter of urgency. Thus, non-timber activity, in the way it is managed, cannot be considered as a development strategy for the communities, however, if the issues raised in this study are addressed, the activity can become attractive.
