Crystalline metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are formed by reticular synthesis, which creates strong bonds between inorganic and organic units. Careful selection of MOF constituents can yield crystals of ultrahigh porosity and high thermal and chemical stability. These characteristics allow the interior of MOFs to be chemically altered for use in gas separation, gas storage, and catalysis, among other applications. The precision commonly exercised in their chemical modification and the ability to expand their metrics without changing the underlying topology have not been achieved with other solids. MOFs whose chemical composition and shape of building units can be multiply varied within a particular structure already exist and may lead to materials that offer a synergistic combination of properties.

The Chemistry and Applications of Metal-Organic Frameworks

A critical review of the emerging field of MOF-based catalysis is presented. Discussed are examples of: (a) opportunistic catalysis with metal nodes, (b) designed catalysis with framework nodes, (c) catalysis by homogeneous catalysts incorporated as framework struts, (d) catalysis by MOF-encapsulated molecular species, (e) catalysis by metal-free organic struts or cavity modifiers, and (f) catalysis by MOF-encapsulated clusters (66 references).

The supramolecular compounds {[W3Se4Cl3(H2O)6]2[PyH⊂C36H36N24O12]}Cl3·18H2O (1) and {[Cl3SnMo3Se4Cl3(H2O)6][Cl3SnMo3Se4Cl2(H2O)7](C36H36N24O12)}Cl·26H2O (2) were isolated from solutions of the selenium-containing tungsten and molybdenum clusters [W3Se4(H2O)9]4+ and [Cl3SnMo3Se4(H2O)9]3+, respectively, and organic cavitand cucurbituril. X-ray diffraction analysis demonstrated that the macrocylcic cucurbituril molecule is coordinated on both sides by the cluster cations through the formation of complementary hydrogen bonds. Compound 1 has a chain structure stabilized by Se...Se interactions between the adjacent cluster cores. In compound 2, the bridging μ2-selenium atoms of the cluster fragment Mo3Se4 are coordinated to the tin atom of the SnCl3
– ligand, thus losing the ability to be involved in Se...Se interactions.

Synthesis and structure of new europium(ɪɪɪ) and terbium(ɪɪɪ) coordination polymers with trans-1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid

During an investigation of the W/Te/Br2 system, we prepared crystals of the title compound, C20H40N4S8Te, from aceto­nitrile solution by slow addition of diethyl ether. It appeared to be a new tetragonal modification. The calculated density of the tetragonal modification (1.513 Mg m−3) is slightly greater than found for the known orthorhombic modification (1.46 Mg m−3). The bond distances and angles are practically the same.

Tetragonal polymorphic modification of tetrakis­(N,N-diethyl­di­thio­carbam­ato-S,S′)­tellurium(IV)

Trinuclear (Et(n-Pr)3N)3[Sb3Br12] (1) and tetranuclear (2,2′-bipyH)4[Sb4Br20] (2) bromoantimonates(III) are obtained by the reaction of solutions of bromides of the respective organic cations and Sb2O3 in HBr. The structures of 1 and 2 are studied by single crystal XRD. The [Sb3Br12]3– (1) anions belong to a previously unknown structure type of halide Sb(III) complexes.
