Journal ArticleDOI
The role of type 1 and curli fimbriae of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli in adherence to abiotic surfaces.
TL;DR: Data indicate that certain STEC isolates are able to form biofilms and that the elaboration of curli fimbriae may enhance biofilm formation leading to possible long-term survival and a potential source of human infection.
Journal ArticleDOI
A mixture containing galactooligosaccharide, produced by the enzymic activity of Bifidobacterium bifidum, reduces Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium infection in mice.
Laura E. J. Searle,Angus I. Best,Alejandro Núñez,Francisco J. Salguero,Linda K. Johnson,Ute Weyer,Alexandra H A Dugdale,W. A. Cooley,Ben Carter,Gareth Jones,George Tzortzis,Martin J. Woodward,Roberto M. La Ragione +12 more
TL;DR: Results indicate that Bimuno significantly reduced the colonization and pathology associated with S. Typhimurium infection in a murine model system, possibly by reducing the invasion of the pathogen into host cells.
Journal ArticleDOI
The role of fimbriae and flagella in the adherence of avian strains of Escherichia coli O78:K80 to tissue culture cells and tracheal and gut explants
TL;DR: The hypothesis that type-1 fimbriae are significant factors in adherence, aided by flagella for penetration of mucus and curli fimbRIae for adherence to the gut is supported.
Journal ArticleDOI
Poxviral Disease in Red Squirrels Sciurus vulgaris in the UK: Spatial and Temporal Trends of an Emerging Threat
Anthony W. Sainsbury,Robert Deaville,Becki Lawson,W. A. Cooley,Stephan S. J. Farelly,Michael J Stack,Paul Duff,Colin McInnes,John Gurnell,P.H. Russell,Stephen P Rushton,Dirk U. Pfeiffer,Peter Nettleton,Peter W. W. Lurz +13 more
TL;DR: Eight juvenile and sub-adult free-living red squirrels apparently survived exposure to SQPV by mounting an immune response, the first evidence of immunity to SQpV in free- living red squirrelS, which possibly suggests a changing host-parasite relationship and that the use of a vaccine may be an effective management tool to protect remnant red squirrel populations.
Journal ArticleDOI
Purified galactooligosaccharide, derived from a mixture produced by the enzymic activity of Bifidobacterium bifidum, reduces Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium adhesion and invasion in vitro and in vivo.
Laura E. J. Searle,W. A. Cooley,Gareth Jones,Alejandro Núñez,Bentley Crudgington,Ute Weyer,Alexandra H A Dugdale,George Tzortzis,James W. Collins,Martin J. Woodward,Roberto M. La Ragione,Roberto M. La Ragione +11 more
TL;DR: The studies presented here clearly indicate that the protective effects conferred by Bimuno(®) can be attributed to GOS, and that the basal solution confers no protective effects against S. Typhimurium.
