Journal ArticleDOI
Mammalian mirtron genes.
TL;DR: The existence of well-conserved mammalian mirtrons indicates their relatively ancient incorporation into endogenous regulatory pathways, and it is hypothesized that different animals may have independently evolved the capacity for this hybrid small RNA pathway.
Journal ArticleDOI
Functionally distinct regulatory RNAs generated by bidirectional transcription and processing of microRNA loci
David M. Tyler,Katsutomo Okamura,Wei Jen Chung,Joshua W. Hagen,Eugene Berezikov,Gregory J. Hannon,Eric C. Lai +6 more
TL;DR: It is reported here that antisense transcription of the Hox miRNA locus mir-iab-4 generates the novel pre-miRNA hairpin mir- iab-8, which is then processed into endogenous mature miRNAs, which contribute to the functional diversification of miRNA genes.
Journal ArticleDOI
Abundant primary piRNAs, endo-siRNAs and microRNAs in a Drosophila ovary cell line
Nelson C. Lau,Nicolas Robine,Raquel Martin,Wei Jen Chung,Yuzo Niki,Eugene Berezikov,Eric C. Lai +6 more
TL;DR: Evidence is provided that a subset of piRNA master clusters, including flamenco, are specifically expressed in OSS and ovarian follicle cells, indicating that the restriction of certain TEs in somatic gonadal cells is largely mediated by a primary piRNA pathway.
