Internet of Things (IoT) technology is prospering and entering every part of our lives, be it education, home, vehicles, or healthcare. With the increase in the number of connected devices, several challenges are also coming up with IoT technology: heterogeneity, scalability, quality of service, security requirements, and many more. Security management takes a back seat in IoT because of cost, size, and power. It poses a significant risk as lack of security makes users skeptical towards using IoT devices. This, in turn, makes IoT vulnerable to security attacks, ultimately causing enormous financial and reputational losses. It makes up for an urgent need to assess present security risks and discuss the upcoming challenges to be ready to face the same. The undertaken study is a multi-fold survey of different security issues present in IoT layers: perception layer, network layer, support layer, application layer, with further focus on Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks. DDoS attacks are significant threats for the cyber world because of their potential to bring down the victims. Different types of DDoS attacks, DDoS attacks in IoT devices, impacts of DDoS attacks, and solutions for mitigation are discussed in detail. The presented review work compares Intrusion Detection and Prevention models for mitigating DDoS attacks and focuses on Intrusion Detection models. Furthermore, the classification of Intrusion Detection Systems, different anomaly detection techniques, different Intrusion Detection System models based on datasets, various machine learning and deep learning techniques for data pre-processing and malware detection has been discussed. In the end, a broader perspective has been envisioned while discussing research challenges, its proposed solutions, and future visions.

Internet of Things Applications, Security Challenges, Attacks, Intrusion Detection, and Future Visions: A Systematic Review

The trade-off between more user bandwidth and quality of service requirements introduces unprecedented challenges to the next generation smart optical networks. In this regard, the use of optical performance monitoring (OPM) and modulation format identification (MFI) techniques becomes a common need to enable the development of next-generation autonomous optical networks, with ultra-low latency and self-adaptability. Recently, machine learning (ML)-based techniques have emerged as a vital solution to many challenging aspects of OPM and MFI in terms of reliability, quality, and implementation efficiency. This article surveys ML-based OPM and MFI techniques proposed in the literature. First, we address the key advantages of employing ML algorithms in optical networks. Then, we review the main optical impairments and modulation formats being monitored and classified, respectively, using ML algorithms. Additionally, we discuss the current status of optical networks in terms of MFI and OPM. This includes standards, monitoring parameters, and the available commercial products with their limitations. Second, we provide a comprehensive review of the available ML-based techniques for MFI, OPM, and joint MFI/OPM, describing their performance, advantages, and limitations. Third, we give an overview of the exiting ML-based OPM and MFI techniques for the emerging optical networks such as the new fiber-based networks that use future space division multiplexing techniques (e.g., few-mode fiber), the hybrid radio-over-fiber networks, and the free space optical networks. Finally, we discuss the open issues, potential future research directions, and recommendations for the potential implementation of ML-based OPM and MFI techniques. Some lessons learned are presented after each section throughout the paper to help the reader identifying the gaps, weaknesses, and strengths in this field.

Machine Learning Techniques for Optical Performance Monitoring and Modulation Format Identification: A Survey

Electric energy consumption forecasting is an interesting, challenging, and important issue in energy management and equipment efficiency improvement. Existing approaches are predictive models that have the ability to predict for a specific profile, i.e., a time series of a whole building or an individual household in a smart building. In practice, there are many profiles in each smart building, which leads to time-consuming and expensive system resources. Therefore, this study develops a robust framework for the Multiple Electric Energy Consumption forecasting (MEC) of a smart building using Transfer Learning and Long Short-Term Memory (TLL), the so-called MEC-TLL framework. In this framework, we first employ a k-means clustering algorithm to cluster the daily load demand of many profiles in the training set. In this phase, we also perform Silhouette analysis to specify the optimal number of clusters for the experimental datasets. Next, this study develops the MEC training algorithm, which utilizes a cluster-based strategy for transfer learning the Long Short-Term Memory models to reduce the computational time. Finally, extensive experiments are conducted to compare the computational time and different performance metrics for multiple electric energy consumption forecasting on two smart buildings in South Korea. The experimental results indicate that our proposed approach is capable of economical overheads while achieving superior performances. Therefore, the proposed approach can be applied effectively for intelligent energy management in smart buildings.

Multiple Electric Energy Consumption Forecasting Using a Cluster-Based Strategy for Transfer Learning in Smart Building.

In this Internet age, there are increasingly many threats to the security and safety of users daily. One of such threats is malicious software otherwise known as malware (ransomware, Trojans, viruses, etc.). The effect of this threat can lead to loss or malicious replacement of important information (such as bank account details, etc.). Malware creators have been able to bypass traditional methods of malware detection, which can be time-consuming and unreliable for unknown malware. This motivates the need for intelligent ways to detect malware, especially new malware which have not been evaluated or studied before. Machine learning provides an intelligent way to detect malware and comprises two stages: feature extraction and classification. This study suggests an ensemble learning-based method for malware detection. The base stage classification is done by a stacked ensemble of fully-connected and one-dimensional convolutional neural networks (CNNs), whereas the end-stage classification is done by a machine learning algorithm. For a meta-learner, we analyzed and compared 15 machine learning classifiers. For comparison, five machine learning algorithms were used: naive Bayes, decision tree, random forest, gradient boosting, and AdaBoosting. The results of experiments made on the Windows Portable Executable (PE) malware dataset are presented. The best results were obtained by an ensemble of seven neural networks and the ExtraTrees classifier as a final-stage classifier.

Windows PE Malware Detection Using Ensemble Learning

Malware classification plays an important role in tracing the attack sources of computer security However, existing static analysis methods are fast in classification, but they are inefficient in some malware using packing and obfuscation techniques; the dynamic analysis methods have better universality for packing and obfuscation, but they will cause excessive classification cost To overcome these shortcomings, in this paper, we propose a classification system Malscore based on the probability scoring and machine learning, which sets the probability threshold to concatenate static analysis (called Phase 1) and dynamic analysis (called Phase 2) The convolutional neural networks with spatial pyramid pooling were used to analyze the grayscale images (static features) in Phase 1, and the variable n-grams and machine learning were used to analyze the native API call sequences (dynamic features) in Phase 2 Malscore combined static analysis with dynamic analysis not only accelerated the static analysis process by taking advantage of the CNN in image recognition but also appeared to be more resilient to obfuscation by the dynamic analysis Different from other static and dynamic analysis techniques, when malware is detected, due to the fact that malware will most likely be labeled only by static analysis, we could reduce the overheads by dynamically analyzing a few malware that has less obvious features or greater confusion in static analysis We performed experiments on 174607 malware samples from 63 malware families The result showed that Malscore achieved 9882% accuracy for malware classification Furthermore, Malscore was compared with the method of using static and dynamic analysis The preprocessing and test time represented a reduction of 5958% and 6170%, respectively

Malware Classification Using Probability Scoring and Machine Learning

Transfer learning can enhance classification performance of a target domain with insufficient training data by utilizing knowledge relating to the target domain from source domain. Nowadays, it is common to see two or more source domains available for knowledge transfer, which can improve performance of learning tasks in the target domain. However, the classification performance of the target domain decreases due to mismatching of probability distribution. Recent studies have shown that deep learning can build deep structures by extracting more effective features to resist the mismatching. In this paper, we propose a new multi-source deep transfer neural network algorithm, MultiDTNN, based on convolutional neural network and multi-source transfer learning. In MultiDTNN, joint probability distribution adaptation (JPDA) is used for reducing the mismatching between source and target domains to enhance features transferability of the source domain in deep neural networks. Then, the convolutional neural network is trained by utilizing the datasets of each source and target domain to obtain a set of classifiers. Finally, the designed selection strategy selects classifier with the smallest classification error on the target domain from the set to assemble the MultiDTNN framework. The effectiveness of the proposed MultiDTNN is verified by comparing it with other state-of-the-art deep transfer learning on three datasets.

An intrusion detection method based on active transfer learning

In order to protect data privacy, a new transfer group probability Naive Bayes algorithm TrGNB is proposed. TrGNB is applied to scenarios in which the source domain contains a large amount of labeled data and only a small amount of unlabeled data group probability information in the target domain. TrGNB integrates the ideology of transfer learning and group probability information into the Naive Bayes model, which not only improves the classification effect of the learning task in the target domain but also protects the data privacy. The TrGNB was verified on the 20-Newsgroups, Reuters-21578 and Email spam datasets. The experimental results show that TrGNB significantly improves the classification accuracy compared with the benchmark algorithms.

Transfer Naive Bayes algorithm with group probabilities

To give full play to the high efficiency and parallelism of multi-processor systems, the fireworks algorithm (FWA) is improved, and a multi-processor task scheduling algorithm based on improved FWA, named IMFWA, is proposed. IMFWA maps continuous space to discrete space by designing the fireworks location coding method, improves the Gaussian mutation process, and sets adaptive dimensions to accelerate the convergence speed of the algorithm. At the same time, in order to reduce the time complexity of the algorithm and shorten the time finding the optimal task scheduling sequence, the fitness-based tournament selection strategy is used instead of the rule based on Euclidean distance. Finally, IMFWA is compared with the basic fireworks algorithm and the genetic algorithms on the Matlab platform for performance analysis. The results show that the IMFWA has advantages in the convergence speed, and the negative impact of the number of tasks is also lower than the fireworks algorithm and genetic algorithm.
