Blood cell count is highly useful in identifying the occurrence of a particular disease or ailment. To successfully measure the blood cell count, sophisticated equipment that makes use of invasive methods to acquire the blood cell slides or images is utilized. These blood cell images are subjected to various data analyzing techniques that count and classify the different types of blood cells. Nowadays, deep learning-based methods are in practice to analyze the data. These methods are less time-consuming and require less sophisticated equipment. This paper implements a deep learning (D.L) model that uses the DenseNet121 model to classify the different types of white blood cells (WBC). The DenseNet121 model is optimized with the preprocessing techniques of normalization and data augmentation. This model yielded an accuracy of 98.84%, a precision of 99.33%, a sensitivity of 98.85%, and a specificity of 99.61%. The proposed model is simulated with four batch sizes (BS) along with the Adam optimizer and 10 epochs. It is concluded from the results that the DenseNet121 model has outperformed with batch size 8 as compared to other batch sizes. The dataset has been taken from the Kaggle having 12,444 images with the images of 3120 eosinophils, 3103 lymphocytes, 3098 monocytes, and 3123 neutrophils. With such results, these models could be utilized for developing clinically useful solutions that are able to detect WBC in blood cell images.

Deep Learning Model for the Automatic Classification of White Blood Cells

Lightweight deep network-enabled real-time low-visibility enhancement for promoting vessel detection in maritime video surveillance

Underwater captured images are usually degraded by low contrast, hazy, and blurry due to absorbing and scattering, which limits their analyses and applications. To address these problems, a red channel prior guided variational framework is proposed based on the complete underwater image formation model (UIFM). Unlike most of the existing methods that only consider the direct transmission and backscattering components, we additionally include forward scattering component into the UIFM. In the proposed variational framework, we successfully incorporate the normalized total variation item and sparse prior knowledge of blur kernel together. In addition, we perform the estimation of blur kernel by varying image resolution in a coarse-to-fine manner to avoid local minima. Moreover, for solving the generated non-smooth optimization problem, we employ the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) to accelerate the whole progress. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method has a good performance on dehazing and deblurring. Extensive qualitative and quantitative comparisons further validate its superiority against the other state-of-the-art algorithms. A Variational Framework for Underwater Image Dehazing and Deblurring

The Internet of Things (IoT) has recently emerged as a revolutionary communication paradigm where a large number of objects and devices are closely interconnected to enable smart industrial environments. The tremendous growth of visual sensors can significantly promote the traffic situational awareness, traffic safety management, and intelligent vehicle navigation in intelligent transportation systems (ITSs). However, due to the absorption and scattering of light by the turbid medium in atmosphere, the visual IoT inevitably suffers from imaging quality degradation, e.g., contrast reduction, color distortion, etc. This negative impact can not only reduce the imaging quality, but also bring challenges for the deployment of several high-level vision tasks (e.g., object detection, tracking, recognition, etc.) in the ITS. To improve imaging quality under the hazy environment, we propose a deep network-enabled three-stage dehazing network (termed TSDNet) for promoting the visual IoT-driven ITS. In particular, the proposed TSDNet mainly contains three parts, i.e., multiscale attention module for estimating the hazy distribution in the RGB image domain, two-branch extraction module for learning the hazy features, and multifeature fusion module for integrating all characteristic information and reconstructing the haze-free image. Numerous experiments have been implemented on synthetic and real-world imaging scenarios. Dehazing results illustrated that our TSDNet remarkably outperformed several state-of-the-art methods in terms of both qualitative and quantitative evaluations. The high-accuracy object detection results have also demonstrated the superior dehazing performance of the TSDNet under hazy atmosphere conditions.
