Magnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles: Synthesis, Stabilization, Vectorization, Physicochemical Characterizations, and Biological Applications

Freedom of design, mass customisation, waste minimisation and the ability to manufacture complex structures, as well as fast prototyping, are the main benefits of additive manufacturing (AM) or 3D printing. A comprehensive review of the main 3D printing methods, materials and their development in trending applications was carried out. In particular, the revolutionary applications of AM in biomedical, aerospace, buildings and protective structures were discussed. The current state of materials development, including metal alloys, polymer composites, ceramics and concrete, was presented. In addition, this paper discussed the main processing challenges with void formation, anisotropic behaviour, the limitation of computer design and layer-by-layer appearance. Overall, this paper gives an overview of 3D printing, including a survey on its benefits and drawbacks as a benchmark for future research and development.

There is a special reason for reviewing this book at this time: it is the 50th edition of a compendium that is known and used frequently in most chemical and physical laboratories in many parts of the world. Surely, a publication that has been published for 56 years, withstanding the vagaries of science in this century, must have had something to offer. There is another reason: while the book is a standard fixture in most chemical and physical laboratories, including those in medical centers, it is not as frequently seen in the laboratories of physician's offices (those either in solo or group practice). I believe that the Handbook can be useful in those laboratories. One of the reasons, among others, is that the various basic items of information it offers may be helpful in new tests, either physical or chemical, which are continuously being published. This article presents the results of a combined experimental and theoretical study of the effects of loading rate (1, 10, and 100 MPa√m · s−1) on the resistance-curve behavior and toughening in cast lamellar gamma-based titanium aluminides (Ti-48Al-2Cr-2Nb, Ti-45Al-2Mn-2Nb + 0.8 vol pct TiB2, and Ti-47Al-2Mn-2Nb + 0.8 vol pct TiB2). Note that compositions are quoted in at. pct unless stated otherwise. The fracture-initiation toughness and resistance-curve behavior in Ti-48Al-2Cr-2Nb are shown to be similar at the three loading rates examined. In the case of the Mn-containing alloys, stronger resistance-curve behavior is observed as the loading rate increases from 1 to 10 MPa√m · s−1. However, the fracture-initiation toughness and resistance-curve behavior of the Mn-containing alloys are similar at loading rates of 10 and 100 MPa√m · s−1. The observed resistance-curve behavior is attributed largely to the role of ligament bridging and, to a lesser extent, to the effects of cracktip plasticity. Small- and large-scale bridging models are also shown to predict the measured resistance curves when the observed/measured bridging parameters and material properties are used in the micromechanical modeling of crack bridging. The implications of the results are also discussed for the design of damage-tolerant gamma alloys and microstructures.

An investigation of the effects of loading rate on resistance-curve behavior and toughening in cast lamellar gamma-based titanium aluminides

The fatigue and fracture mechanisms in Ti-48Al-xMn (x = 1.4 to 2.0 at. pct) gamma-based titanium aluminide alloys are elucidated. Unlike most gamma alloys, which fail predominantly by transgranular fracture at room temperature, fracture in ternary Ti-48Al-xMn alloys is shown to occur mainly by intergranular failure. The incidence of intergranular failure increased with increasing annealing duration and temperature. Intergranular fracture is shown to occur as a result of the segregation of Mn to equiaxed and interlamellar boundaries. Annealing either above or below the eutectoid temperature results in the precipitation of α2 particles. The reduction in the strength and toughness of ternary Mn-containing alloys is attributed to the combined effects of segregation and α2 precipitation. A micromechanics framework is presented for the assessment of twin toughening mechanisms under monotonie and cyclic loading.

An investigation of the fatigue and fracture behavior of Mn-containing gamma titanium aluminides

This article presents the results of the combined effects of RGD (arginine-glycine-aspartate) functionalization and mechanical stimulation on osteogenesis that could lead to the development of implantable robust tissue-engineered mineralized constructs. Porous polycaprolactone/hydroxyapatite (PCL/HA) scaffolds are functionalized with RGD-C (arginine-glycine-aspartate-cysteine) peptide. The effects of RGD functionalization are then explored on human fetal osteoblast cell adhesion, proliferation, osteogenic differentiation (alkaline phosphatase activity), extracellular matrix (ECM) production, and mineralization over 28 days. The effects of RGD functionalization followed by mechanical stimulation with a cyclic fluid shear stress of 3.93 mPa in a perfusion bioreactor are also elucidated. The tensile properties (Young's moduli and ultimate tensile strengths) of the cell-laden scaffolds are measured at different stages of cell culture to understand how the mechanical properties of the tissue-engineered structures evolve. RGD functionalization is shown to promote initial cell adhesion, proliferation, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, and ECM production. However, it does not significantly affect mineralization and tensile properties. Mechanical stimulation after RGD functionalization is shown to further improve the ALP activity, ECM production, mineralization, and tensile properties, but not cell proliferation. The results suggest that combined RGD functionalization and mechanical stimulation of cell-laden PCL/HA scaffolds can be used to accelerate the regeneration of robust bioengineered bone structures.

Mechanical stimulation improves osteogenesis and the mechanical properties of osteoblast‐laden RGD‐functionalized polycaprolactone/hydroxyapatite scaffolds

This paper presents the results of combined experimental and theoretical studies of the statistical distributions of the strength and fracture toughness of recycled polyethylene-reinforced laterite composites for potential applications in building materials. The composites are produced with different volume percentages (0–30% v/v) and particle sizes (∼300±0.02, ∼600 ± 0.03, ∼900 ± 0.03, ∼1,200±0.02, ∼1,500±0.04, and 1,800±0.03  μm) of powdered polyethylene (PE) in a laterite matrix. The composites with ∼900±0.03  μm and 20-volume percentage of PE are shown to have the best combination of flexural-compressive strengths and fracture toughness. The statistical variations in the flexural-compressive strengths and fracture toughness are well characterized by the Weibull distributions.
