Minimization of initial burst in poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogels by surface extraction and surface-preferential crosslinking.

TL;DR: Surface extraction and surface-preferential crosslinking were investigated as effective methods to reduce the burst effect for proxyphylline release from poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogels, with the success of extracting from dried samples attributed to the lack of drug diffusivity and redistribution after extraction.

TL;DR: In this paper, a small molecular size drug, proxyphylline, was used as a model solute to study the burst release of a drug from swellable hydrogels based on cross-linked poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA).
