Science and technologies based on terahertz frequency electromagnetic radiation (100 GHz–30 THz) have developed rapidly over the last 30 years. For most of the 20th Century, terahertz radiation, then referred to as sub-millimeter wave or far-infrared radiation, was mainly utilized by astronomers and some spectroscopists. Following the development of laser based terahertz time-domain spectroscopy in the 1980s and 1990s the field of THz science and technology expanded rapidly, to the extent that it now touches many areas from fundamental science to 'real world' applications. For example THz radiation is being used to optimize materials for new solar cells, and may also be a key technology for the next generation of airport security scanners. While the field was emerging it was possible to keep track of all new developments, however now the field has grown so much that it is increasingly difficult to follow the diverse range of new discoveries and applications that are appearing. At this point in time, when the field of THz science and technology is moving from an emerging to a more established and interdisciplinary field, it is apt to present a roadmap to help identify the breadth and future directions of the field. The aim of this roadmap is to present a snapshot of the present state of THz science and technology in 2017, and provide an opinion on the challenges and opportunities that the future holds. To be able to achieve this aim, we have invited a group of international experts to write 18 sections that cover most of the key areas of THz science and technology. We hope that The 2017 Roadmap on THz science and technology will prove to be a useful resource by providing a wide ranging introduction to the capabilities of THz radiation for those outside or just entering the field as well as providing perspective and breadth for those who are well established. We also feel that this review should serve as a useful guide for government and funding agencies.

The 2016 terahertz science and technology roadmap

Evolving from metamaterials, optical metasurfaces not only inherit their unprecedented flexibility in tailoring light–matter interaction but also the generally fixed response determined by the metaatoms’ geometries — an undesirable property that hinders the development of practical metadevices. Consequently, novel optical metasurfaces that can be tuned in an active manner have been intensively studied in recent years. Due to their optically thin structures, optical metasurfaces present unique characteristics in the realization of dynamic tuning. In this review, a detailed summary of the recent advances in active optical metasurfaces is provided including discussions reviewing a variety of active materials and approaches that enable faster, stronger and more accurate tuning. Beyond facilitating practical metadevices, studies of active metasurfaces have, and will continue to deepen our understandings of the interaction between light and nanostructured photonic architectures and to promote the development of nanofabrication techniques involving high-complexity.

Dynamic Terahertz Plasmonics Enabled by Phase‐Change Materials

Relaxor ferroelectrics continue to attract great attention for applications, including electrocaloric refrigeration, but the commonly used, indirect method of electrocaloric characterization based on the Maxwell relation often leads to artifacts. This analysis of long- and short-range ferroelectric order and the electrocaloric effect in Pb${}_{0.91}$La${}_{0.06}$Zr${}_{0.8}$Ti${}_{0.2}$O${}_{3}$ uses both direct and indirect characterizations, to clarify the applicability of the Maxwell relation to the physics of the relaxor, and the origin of discrepancies. It also suggests how to design relaxors with large electrocaloric effect by exploiting the transitions between polar nanoregions.

Effects of Long- and Short-Range Ferroelectric Order on the Electrocaloric Effect in Relaxor Ferroelectric Ceramics

Terahertz (THz) band communications are envisioned as a key technology for 6G and Beyond. As a fundamental wireless infrastructure, THz communication can boost abundant promising applications. In 2014, our team published two comprehensive roadmaps for the development and progress of THz communication networks, which helped the research community to start research on this subject afterwards. The topic of THz communications became very important and appealing to the research community due to 6G wireless systems design and development in recent years. Many papers are getting published covering different aspects of wireless systems using the THz band. With this paper, our aim is looking back to the last decade and revisiting the old problems and pointing out what has been achieved in the research community so far. Furthermore, in this paper, open challenges and new research directions still to be investigated for the THz band communication systems are presented, by covering diverse topics ranging from devices, channel behavior, communication and networking, to physical testbeds and demonstration systems. The key aspects presented in this paper will enable THz communications as a pillar of 6G and Beyond wireless systems in the next decade.

Terahertz Band Communication: An Old Problem Revisited and Research Directions for the Next Decade

An electrically tunable terahertz (THz) modulator with large modulation depth and low insertion loss is performed with liquid crystal (LC) metamaterial. The modulation depth beyond 90% and insertion loss below 0.5 dB are achievable at normal incidence by exploiting plasmon-induced transparency (PIT) effect. The PIT spectra can be manipulated by actively controlling the interference between dipole mode and nonlocal surface-Bloch mode with LC. The incident angle tuning effect on PIT spectra shows that the large modulation depth and low insertion loss can remain over a wide range of working angles. The superior property and simplicity of design make this modulator promising in advanced terahertz communication.
