Journal ArticleDOI
Investigation of a unilateral pleural effusion in adults: British Thoracic Society pleural disease guideline 2010
TL;DR: This guideline includes a review of recent evidence for the use of new biomarkers including N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP), mesothelin and surrogate markers of tuberculous pleuritis.
Journal ArticleDOI
Intrapleural use of tissue plasminogen activator and DNase in pleural infection
Najib M. Rahman,Nick A Maskell,Alex West,Richard Teoh,Anthony G. Arnold,Carolyn Mackinlay,Daniel Peckham,Christopher W. H. Davies,Nabeel Ali,William Kinnear,Andrew Bentley,Brennan C Kahan,John M. Wrightson,Helen E. Davies,Clare E Hooper,Y. C. Gary Lee,Emma L. Hedley,Nicky Crosthwaite,Louise Choo,Emma J. Helm,Fergus V. Gleeson,Fergus V. Gleeson,Andrew J. Nunn,Robert J. O. Davies +23 more
TL;DR: Intrapleural t-PA-DNase therapy improved fluid drainage in patients with pleural infection and reduced the frequency of surgical referral and the duration of the hospital stay.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effect of an indwelling pleural catheter vs chest tube and talc pleurodesis for relieving dyspnea in patients with malignant pleural effusion: the TIME2 randomized controlled trial.
Helen E. Davies,Eleanor K. Mishra,Brennan C Kahan,John M. Wrightson,Andrew E. Stanton,Anur Guhan,Christopher W. H. Davies,Jamal Grayez,Richard Harrison,Anjani Prasad,Nicola Crosthwaite,Y. C. Gary Lee,Robert J. O. Davies,Robert F. Miller,Najib M. Rahman +14 more
TL;DR: There was no significant difference between IPCs and talc pleurodesis at relieving patient-reported dyspnea among patients with malignant pleural effusion and no previous pleurodenis.
Journal ArticleDOI
Predicting survival in malignant pleural effusion: development and validation of the LENT prognostic score
Amelia O Clive,Amelia O Clive,Brennan C Kahan,Clare E Hooper,Clare E Hooper,Rahul Bhatnagar,Rahul Bhatnagar,Anna J Morley,Natalie Zahan-Evans,Oliver J Bintcliffe,Rogier C. Boshuizen,Edward T.H. Fysh,Claire Tobin,Andrew R L Medford,John E Harvey,Michel M. van den Heuvel,Y. C. Gary Lee,Nick A Maskell,Nick A Maskell +18 more
TL;DR: The LENT scoring system is the first validated prognostic score in MPE, which predicts survival with significantly better accuracy than ECOG PS alone, and may aid clinical decision making in this diverse patient population.
Journal ArticleDOI
CD56bright NK Cells Are Enriched at Inflammatory Sites and Can Engage with Monocytes in a Reciprocal Program of Activation
Nicola Dalbeth,Roger Gundle,Robert J. O. Davies,Y. C. Gary Lee,Andrew J. McMichael,Margaret F. C. Callan,Margaret F. C. Callan +6 more
TL;DR: The experiments show that CD56bright NK cells accumulate in inflammatory lesions and, in the appropriate cytokine environment, can engage with CD14+ monocytes in a reciprocal activatory fashion, thereby amplifying the inflammatory response.
