Two-photon excitation provides a means of activating chemical or physical processes with high spatial resolution in three dimensions and has made possible the development of three-dimensional fluorescence imaging, optical data storage, and lithographic microfabrication. These applications take advantage of the fact that the two-photon absorption probability depends quadratically on intensity, so under tight-focusing conditions, the absorption is confined at the focus to a volume of order λ3 (where λ is the laser wavelength). Any subsequent process, such as fluorescence or a photoinduced chemical reaction, is also localized in this small volume. Although three-dimensional data storage and microfabrication have been illustrated using two-photon-initiated polymerization of resins incorporating conventional ultraviolet-absorbing initiators, such photopolymer systems exhibit low photosensitivity as the initiators have small two-photon absorption cross-sections (δ). Consequently, this approach requires high laser power, and its widespread use remains impractical. Here we report on a class of π;-conjugated compounds that exhibit large δ (as high as 1, 250 × 10−50 cm4 s per photon) and enhanced two-photon sensitivity relative to ultraviolet initiators. Two-photon excitable resins based on these new initiators have been developed and used to demonstrate a scheme for three-dimensional data storage which permits fluorescent and refractive read-out, and the fabrication of three-dimensional micro-optical and micromechanical structures, including photonic-bandgap-type structures.

Two-photon polymerization initiators for three-dimensional optical data storage and microfabrication

Focusing on the use of nanophosphors for in vivo imaging and diagnosis applications, we used thermally stimulated luminescence (TSL) measurements to study the influence of triva- lent lanthanide Ln 3+ (Ln = Dy, Pr, Ce, Nd) electron traps on the optical properties of Mn 2+ -doped diopside-based persistent lumi- nescence nanoparticles. This work reveals that Pr 3+ is the most suitable Ln 3+ electron trap in the diopside lattice, providing optimal trap depth for room temperature afterglow and resulting in the most intense luminescence decay curve after X-ray irradiation. This luminescence dependency toward the electron trap is maintained through additional doping with Eu 2+ , allowing UV-light excitation, critical for bioimaging applications in living animals. We finally identify a novel composition (CaMgSi2O6:Eu 2+ ,Mn 2+ ,Pr 3+ ) for in vivo imaging, displaying a strong near-infrared afterglow centered on 685 nm, and present evidence that intravenous injection ofsuchpersistentluminescencenanoparticlesinmiceallowsnotonlyimprovedbuthighlysensitivedetectionthroughlivingtissues.

Controlling Electron Trap Depth To Enhance Optical Properties of Persistent Luminescence Nanoparticles for In Vivo Imaging ThomasMaldiney, † AurelieLecointre, ‡ BrunoViana,* ,‡ AurelieBessiere, ‡ MichelBessodes, † DidierGourier, ‡

Molecular persistently luminescent materials have received recent attention due to their promising applications in optical displays, biological imaging, chemical sensing, and security systems. In this review, we systematically summarize recent advances in establishing persistently luminescent materials—specifically focusing on materials composed of molecular hybrids for the first time. We describe the main strategies for synthesizing these hybrid materials, namely: (i) inorganics/organics, (ii) organics/organics, and (iii) organics/polymer systems and demonstrate how molecular hybrids provide synergistic effects, while improving luminescence lifetimes and efficiencies. These hybrid materials promote new methods for tuning key physical properties such as singlet–triplet excited state energies by controlling the chemical interactions and molecular orientations in the solid state. We review new advances in these materials from the perspective of examining experimental and theoretical approaches to room-temperature phosphorescence and thermally-activated delayed fluorescence. Finally, this review concludes by summarizing the current challenges and future opportunities for these hybrid materials.

Recent advances in persistent luminescence based on molecular hybrid materials

Impurity doping is a promising method to impart new properties to various materials. Due to their unique optical, magnetic, and electrical properties, rare-earth ions have been extensively explored as active dopants in inorganic crystal lattices since the 18th century. Rare-earth doping can alter the crystallographic phase, morphology, and size, leading to tunable optical responses of doped nanomaterials. Moreover, rare-earth doping can control the ultimate electronic and catalytic performance of doped nanomaterials in a tunable and scalable manner, enabling significant improvements in energy harvesting and conversion. A better understanding of the critical role of rare-earth doping is a prerequisite for the development of an extensive repertoire of functional nanomaterials for practical applications. In this review, we highlight recent advances in rare-earth doping in inorganic nanomaterials and the associated applications in many fields. This review covers the key criteria for rare-earth doping, including basic electronic structures, lattice environments, and doping strategies, as well as fundamental design principles that enhance the electrical, optical, catalytic, and magnetic properties of the material. We also discuss future research directions and challenges in controlling rare-earth doping for new applications.

In the current "big data" era, the state-of-the-art optical data storage (ODS) has become a front-runner in the competing data storage technologies. As one of the most promising methods for breaking the physical limitation suffered by traditional ones, the advance of optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) based optical storage technique is now still limited by the simultaneous single-level write-in and readout in a same spot. In this work, to bridge the data-capacity gap, we report for the first time a novel and promising nonphysical multidimensional OSL-based ODS flexible medium for erasable multilevel optical data recording and reading. We tailor multidimensional traps with discrete, narrowly distributed energy levels through (multi-)codoping of selective trivalent rare-earth ions into Eu2+-activated barium orthosilicate (Ba2SiO4). Upon UV/blue light illumination, information can be sequentially recorded in different traps assisted by thermal cleaning with an increase of storage capacity by orders of magnitude, which is addressable individually in the whole domain or bit-by-bit mode without the crosstalk by designed thermal/optical stimuli. Remarkably, good data retention and robust fatigue resistance have been achieved in recycle data recording. Insight is forged from charge carrier dynamics and interactions with traps for a universal method of data storage, and proof-of-concept applications are also demonstrated, thereby providing the way to not only rewritable multilevel ODS but also high-security encryption/decryption.
