We redescribe the only previously known species of Myrsidea from bulbuls, M. pycnonoti Eichler. Sixteen new species are described; they and their type hosts are: M. phillipsi ex Pycnonotus goiavier goiavier (Scopoli), M. gieferi ex P. goiavier suluensis Mearns, M. kulpai ex P. flavescens Blyth, M. finlaysoni ex P. finlaysoni Strickland, M. kathleenae ex P. cafer (L.), M. warwicki ex Ixos philippinus (J. R. Forster), M. mcclurei ex Microscelis amaurotis (Temminck), M. zeylanici ex P. zeylanicus (Gmelin), M. plumosi ex P. plumosus Blyth, M. eutiloti ex P. eutilotus (Jardine and Selby), M. adamsae ex P. urostictus (Salvadori), M. ochracei ex Criniger ochraceus F. Moore, M. borbonici ex Hypsipetes borbonicus (J. R. Forster), M. johnsoni ex P. atriceps (Temminck), M. palmai ex C. ochraceus, and M. claytoni ex P. eutilotus. A key is provided for the identification of these 17 species.

A new species

The residue of pesticides in crops, soil, and water continues to be a widespread concern due to the threat to human health and food safety. With the aim to develop highly sensitive sensing materials and portable detection devices, two dicarbazole-based fluorescent micro-/mesoporous polymers (JYs) with a larger specific surface area and pore sizes ranging from 1.1 to 34.2 nm are synthesized. The Stern-Volmer constants of JY fluorescence quenching for imidacloprid (50,063 M-1) exceed 23-51 times those of the reported porous organic polymers (980-2173 M-1). Of particular interest is the observation that JYs show rapid fluorescence response (2 s) and ultralow detection limit (30 ppb) for imidacloprid in water medium. The pronounced chemsensing property is attributed to the synergistic role of the hierarchical pore structure, large π-conjugation of chromophore groups, and strong inner filter effect between the polymer and imidacloprid molecule. Moreover, the pesticide detection of JYs exhibits good interference resistance in complicated service environments such as the extract liquids of the apple peel and field soil as well as aqueous solutions of various cations and anions. Because of the portability, excellent reusability, and sensitive fluorescence response, the prepared JYs and detection devices have promising applications in the on-site monitoring and early warning of the pesticide residues.

Synergistically promoting plant health by harnessing synthetic microbial communities and prebiotics

Continuous cropping obstacles have increasingly become an important phenomenon affecting crop yield and quality. Its harm includes the deterioration of soil basic physical and chemical properties, changes of soil microbial community structure, accumulation of autotoxins, weakness of plant growth, and aggravation of diseases and pests. In this review, the evolutionary trend of soil microbial structure driven by continuous cropping was generalized, while drivers of these changes summed up as destruction of soil microbial living environment and competition within the community. We introduced a microorganism proliferation and working model with three basics and a vector, and four corresponding effective measures to reshape the structure were comprehensively expounded. According to the model, we also put forward three optimization strategies of the existing measures. In which, synthetic microbiology provides a new solution for improving soil community structure. Meanwhile, to ensure the survival and reproduction of soil microorganisms, it is necessary to consider their living space and carbon sources in soil fully. This review provided a comprehensive perspective for understanding the evolutionary trend of the soil microbial community under continuous cropping conditions and a summary of reshaping measures and their optimization direction.

Soil microorganisms can form a stable dynamic system with plant root systems. The composition of the soil microorganism community is related to the growth and stress resistance of plants; in turn, soil microorganisms are also regulated by plant genotypes and root exudates. Therefore, research on how to identify microorganisms that are beneficial or harmful to plants, study the interaction between microorganisms and plants, and form stable microbial communities for better plant growth plays an important role in sustainable agriculture. It is of great significance to identify and analyze rhizosphere microorganisms and plant endophytes through high-throughput methods, especially to analyze which microorganisms are beneficial to plants, which are harmful to plants, and which are opportunistic pathogens. This review provides a theoretical basis and outlook for the utilization of beneficial microbes in sustainable agriculture.

High-Throughput Customization of Plant Microbiomes for Sustainable Agriculture.

Plant aquaporins are a recently noted biological resource with a great potential to improve crop growth and defense traits. Here, we report the functional modulation of the rice (Oryza sativa) aquaporin OsPIP1;3 to enhance rice photosynthesis and grain production and to control bacterial blight and leaf streak, the most devastating worldwide bacterial diseases in the crop. We characterize OsPIP1;3 as a physiologically relevant CO2 -transporting facilitator, which supports 30% of rice photosynthesis on average. This role is nullified by interaction of OsPIP1;3 with the bacterial protein Hpa1, an essential component of the Type III translocon that supports translocation of the bacterial Type III effectors PthXo1 and TALi into rice cells to induce leaf blight and streak, respectively. Hpa1 binding shifts OsPIP1;3 from CO2 transport to effector translocation, aggravates bacterial virulence, and blocks rice photosynthesis. On the contrary, the external application of isolated Hpa1 to rice plants effectively prevents OsPIP1;3 from interaction with Hpa1 secreted by the bacteria that are infecting the plants. Blockage of the OsPIP1;3-Hpa1 interaction reverts OsPIP1;3 from effector translocation to CO2 transport, abrogates bacterial virulence, and meanwhile induces defense responses in rice. These beneficial effects can combine to enhance photosynthesis by 29-30%, reduce bacterial disease by 58-75%, and increase grain yield by 11-34% in different rice varieties investigated in small-scale field trials conducted during the past years. Our results suggest that crop productivity and immunity can be coordinated by modulating the physiological and pathological functions of a single aquaporin to break the growth-defense tradeoff barrier.

Functional modulation of an aquaporin to intensify photosynthesis and abrogate bacterial virulence in rice

The invention discloses cyclo(lle-lle) dipeptide and a preparation method thereof. The cyclo(lle-lle) dipeptide is obtained by fermenting and separating a paecilomyces variot bainier strain SJ1 isolated from wild sea-buckthorn. The cyclodipeptide compound has an obvious promoting effect on the crop seed germination and has remarkable effects in the aspects of salt resistance, flowering induction, cucumber downy mildew resistance, freezing resistance, yield increase and fertilizer utilization. The compound has good development value and good application prospects.
