As wireless video is the fastest growing form of data traffic, methods for spectrally efficient on-demand wireless video streaming are essential to both service providers and users. A key property of video on-demand is the asynchronous content reuse , such that a few popular files account for a large part of the traffic but are viewed by users at different times. Caching of content on wireless devices in conjunction with device-to-device (D2D) communications allows to exploit this property, and provide a network throughput that is significantly in excess of both the conventional approach of unicasting from cellular base stations and the traditional D2D networks for “regular” data traffic. This paper presents in a tutorial and concise form some recent results on the throughput scaling laws of wireless networks with caching and asynchronous content reuse, contrasting the D2D approach with other alternative approaches such as conventional unicasting, harmonic broadcasting , and a novel coded multicasting approach based on caching in the user devices and network-coded transmission from the cellular base station only. Somehow surprisingly, the D2D scheme with spatial reuse and simple decentralized random caching achieves the same near-optimal throughput scaling law as coded multicasting. Both schemes achieve an unbounded throughput gain (in terms of scaling law) with respect to conventional unicasting and harmonic broadcasting, in the relevant regime where the number of video files in the library is smaller than the total size of the distributed cache capacity in the network. To better understand the relative merits of these competing approaches, we consider a holistic D2D system design incorporating traditional microwave (2 GHz) and millimeter-wave (mm-wave) D2D links; the direct connections to the base station can be used to provide those rare video requests that cannot be found in local caches. We provide extensive simulation results under a variety of system settings and compare our scheme with the systems that exploit transmission from the base station only. We show that, also in realistic conditions and nonasymptotic regimes, the proposed D2D approach offers very significant throughput gains.

Wireless Device-to-Device Caching Networks: Basic Principles and System Performance

In this paper, we introduce distributed caching of videos at the base stations of the Radio Access Network (RAN) to significantly improve the video capacity and user experience of mobile networks. To ensure effectiveness of the massively distributed but relatively small-sized RAN caches, unlike Internet content delivery networks (CDNs) that can store millions of videos in a relatively few large-sized caches, we propose RAN-aware reactive and proactive caching policies that utilize User Preference Profiles (UPPs) of active users in a cell. Furthermore, we propose video-aware backhaul and wireless channel scheduling techniques that, in conjunction with edge caching, ensure maximizing the number of concurrent video sessions that can be supported by the end-to-end network while satisfying their initial delay requirements and minimize stalling. To evaluate our proposed techniques, we developed a statistical simulation framework using MATLAB and performed extensive simulations under various cache sizes, video popularity and UPP distributions, user dynamics, and wireless channel conditions. Our simulation results show that RAN caches using UPP-based caching policies, together with video-aware backhaul scheduling, can improve capacity by 300% compared to having no RAN caches, and by more than 50% compared to RAN caches using conventional caching policies. The results also demonstrate that using UPP-based RAN caches can significantly improve the probability that video requests experience low initial delays. In networks where the wireless channel bandwidth may be constrained, application of our videoaware wireless channel scheduler results in significantly (up to 250%) higher video capacity with very low stalling probability.

Video-aware scheduling and caching in the radio access network

With companies such as Netflix and YouTube accounting for more than 50% of the peak download traffic on North American fixed networks in 2015, video streaming represents a significant source of Internet traffic. Multimedia delivery over the Internet has evolved rapidly over the past few years. The last decade has seen video streaming transitioning from User Datagram Protocol to Transmission Control Protocol-based technologies. Dynamic adaptive streaming over HTTP (DASH) has recently emerged as a standard for Internet video streaming. A range of rate adaptation mechanisms are proposed for DASH systems in order to deliver video quality that matches the throughput of dynamic network conditions for a richer user experience. This survey paper looks at emerging research into the application of client-side, server-side, and in-network rate adaptation techniques to support DASH-based content delivery. We provide context and motivation for the application of these techniques and review significant works in the literature from the past decade. These works are categorized according to the feedback signals used and the end-node that performs or assists with the adaptation. We also provide a review of several notable video traffic measurement and characterization studies and outline open research questions in the field.

A Survey of Rate Adaptation Techniques for Dynamic Adaptive Streaming Over HTTP

We consider a wireless device-to-device (D2D) network where the nodes have pre-cached information from a library of available files. Nodes request files at random. If the requested file is not in the on-board cache, then it is downloaded from some neighboring node via one-hop "local" communication. An outage event occurs when a requested file is not found in the neighborhood of the requesting node, or if the network admission control policy decides not to serve the request. We characterize the optimal throughput-outage tradeoff in terms of tight scaling laws for various regimes of the system parameters, when both the number of nodes and the number of files in the library grow to infinity. Our analysis is based on Gupta and Kumar {\em protocol model} for the underlying D2D wireless network, widely used in the literature on capacity scaling laws of wireless networks without caching. Our results show that the combination of D2D spectrum reuse and caching at the user nodes yields a per-user throughput independent of the number of users, for any fixed outage probability in $(0,1)$. This implies that the D2D caching network is "scalable": even though the number of users increases, each user achieves constant throughput. This behavior is very different from the classical Gupta and Kumar result on ad-hoc wireless networks, for which the per-user throughput vanishes as the number of users increases. Furthermore, we show that the user throughput is directly proportional to the fraction of cached information over the whole file library size. Therefore, we can conclude that D2D caching networks can turn "memory" into "bandwidth" (i.e., doubling the on-board cache memory on the user devices yields a 100\% increase of the user throughout).

HTTP-based delivery for Video on Demand (VoD) has been gaining popularity within recent years. Progressive Download over HTTP, typically used in VoD, takes advantage of the widely deployed network caches to release video servers from sending the same content to a high number of users in the same VoD service. However, due to the inherent heterogeneity of user demands, which may result in requesting the same video content in different resolutions or qualities, the caching efficiency is expected to decrease due to a higher variety in requested media files. The use of Scalable Video Coding allows different representations of the same content to be combined in a single file, whose parts, aka layers, are requested sequentially by a user up to the maximum desired quality. In this paper we show the benefits of using Scalable Video Coding to maintain the same set of possible video content representations, while at the same time maximizing the caching efficiency.

Improved caching for HTTP-based Video on Demand using Scalable Video Coding

Cellular networks have witnessed the emergence of the HTTP Adaptive Streaming (HAS) as a new video delivery method. In HAS, several qualities of the same videos are made available in the network so that clients can choose the best quality that fits their bandwidth capacity. This has particular implications on caching strategies with respect to the viewing patterns and the switching behavior between video qualities. In this paper we present analysis of a real HAS dataset collected in France and provided by the country's largest mobile phone operator. Firstly, we analyse the viewing patterns of HAS contents and the distribution of the encoding bit rates requested by mobile clients. Secondly, we give an in-depth analysis of the switching pattern between video bit rates during a video session and assess the implication on the caching efficiency. We also model this switching based on empirical observations. Finally, we propose WA-LRU a new caching algorithm tailored for HAS contents and compare it to the standard LRU. Our evaluations demonstrate that WA-LRU performs better and achieves its goals.

HTTP Adaptive Streaming in Mobile Networks: Characteristics and Caching Opportunities

HTTP Adaptive bitrate video Streaming (HAS) is now widely adopted by Content Delivery Network Providers (CDNPs) and Telecom Operators (Telcos) to improve user Quality of Experience (QoE). In HAS, several versions of videos are made available in the network so that the quality of the video can be chosen to better fit the bandwidth capacity of users. These delivery requirements raise new challenges with respect to content caching strategies, since several versions of the content may compete to be cached. In this paper we present analysis of a real HAS dataset collected in France and provided by a mobile telecom operator involving more than 485,000 users requesting adaptive video contents through more than 8 million video sessions over a 6 week measurement period. Firstly, we propose a fine-grained definition of content popularity by exploiting the segmented nature of video streams. We also provide analysis about the behavior of clients when requesting such HAS streams. We propose novel caching policies tailored for chunk-based streaming. Then we study the relationship between the requested video bitrates and radio constraints. Finally, we study the users' patterns when selecting different bitrates of the same video content. Our findings provide useful insights that can be leveraged by the main actors of video content distribution to improve their content caching strategy for adaptive streaming contents as well as to model users' behavior in this context.

Large scale analysis of HTTP Adaptive Streaming in mobile networks

HTTP Adaptive Streaming (HAS) is gradually being adopted by Over The Top (OTT) content providers. In HAS, a wide range of video bitrates of the same video content are made available over the internet so that clients' players pick the video bitrate that best fit their bandwidth. Yet, this affects the performance of some major components of the video delivery chain, namely CDNs or transparent caches since several versions of the same content compete to be cached. In this context we investigate the benefits of a Cache Friendly HAS system (CF-DASH), which aims to improve the caching efficiency in mobile networks and to sustain the quality of experience of mobile clients. Firstly, we motivate our work by presenting a set of observations we made on large number of clients requesting HAS contents. Secondly we introduce the CF-Dash system and our testbed implementation. Finally, we evaluate CF-dash based on trace-driven simulations and testbed experiments. Our validation results are promising. Simulations on real HAS traffic show that we achieve a significant gain in hit-ratio that ranges from 15% up to 50%..

Improving caching efficiency and quality of experience with CF-Dash

Caching is an effective technique to improve the quality of streaming multimedia services. In this paper, we propose a novel content caching scheme referred as “Cache Management using Temporal Pattern based Solicitation” (CMTPS), to further minimize both service delays and load in the network for Video on Demand (VoD) applications. CMPTS is based on the analysis of clients' requests over passed time intervals to predict the contents that will be solicited in the near future. By means of experimental tests, the CMTPS protocol is evaluated. The obtained results show that CMTPS outperforms LRU, in terms of peak traffic reduction and number of cache hits.
