Journal ArticleDOI

The structure of H5N1 avian influenza neuraminidase suggests new opportunities for drug design

TL;DR: It may be possible to exploit the size and location of the group-1 cavity to develop new anti-influenza drugs, according to X-ray crystallography, which shows that these two groups of neuraminidases are structurally distinct.
Journal ArticleDOI

Crystal structures of oseltamivir-resistant influenza virus neuraminidase mutants.

TL;DR: The enzymatic properties and crystal structures of neuraminidase mutants from H5N1-infected patients are reported that explain the molecular basis of resistance and indicate that it would be prudent for pandemic stockpiles of oseltamivir to be augmented by additional antiviral drugs, including zanamivIR.
Journal ArticleDOI

Evolution of the receptor binding properties of the influenza A(H3N2) hemagglutinin

TL;DR: The results indicate that the evolution of human influenza A(H3N2) viruses since 1968 has produced a virus with a low propensity to bind human receptor analogs, and this loss of avidity correlates with the marked reduction in A( H3N 2) virus disease impact in the last 10 y.
Journal ArticleDOI

Neuraminidase Receptor Binding Variants of Human Influenza A(H3N2) Viruses Resulting from Substitution of Aspartic Acid 151 in the Catalytic Site: a Role in Virus Attachment?

TL;DR: The inhibition of NA-dependent agglutination by the inclusion of oseltamivir carboxylate in the assay was effective in restoring the anti-HA specificity of the hemagglutination inhibition (HI) assay for monitoring antigenic changes in HA.
Journal ArticleDOI

H9N2 subtype influenza A viruses in poultry in pakistan are closely related to the H9N2 viruses responsible for human infection in Hong Kong.

TL;DR: Analysis of the complete genome of a Pakistan isolate showed that it is closely related in all eight genes to the human H9N2 isolates and furthermore that the six genes encoding internal components of the virus are similar to the corresponding genes of the H5N1 viruses that caused 6 fatal cases of human infection.
