TL;DR: In this article , a π-conjugated planar hydrogensquarate (HC4O4)− with large hyperpolarizabilities and giant polarizability anisotropies is identified as a new NLO-active unit.
Abstract: With the development of laser technology, nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals with optimal performance are urgently required. Finding new NLO-active units is necessary to expand the exploration systems for NLO materials. Herein, a π-conjugated planar hydrogensquarate (HC4O4)− with large hyperpolarizabilities and giant polarizability anisotropies is identified as a new NLO-active unit. On the basis of this idea, a new NLO crystal NaHC4O4·H2O is found by using the first-principles high-throughput screening pipeline for nonlinear optical materials (FHSP-NLO). It is the first NLO crystal found in squarates. Subsequently, the crystal with a size of 30 × 6 × 5 mm was grown by a facile aqueous solution method. NaHC4O4·H2O shows a strong powder SHG effect of 2.3 × KDP and a giant birefringence of 0.52 at 1064 nm. Electronic structure calculation and analysis reveal that the π orbitals of the (HC4O4)− groups are the dominant source of the SHG coefficient. This study provides novel NLO-active units and a materials system to design and find NLO crystals.

TL;DR: In this article , two lead borate-nitrates Pb6O4(BO3)(NO3), and Pb 6O2(BO 3)2(NO3)F were obtained by the high-temperature flux method.
Abstract: Two lead borate-nitrates Pb6O4(BO3)(NO3) and Pb6O2(BO3)2(NO3)F were obtained by the high-temperature flux method. Interestingly, their crystal structure consists of anion-centered [OPb4] tetrahedra and π-conjugated BO3 and NO3 units. The first principles calculations indicate that both compounds show large birefringence.

TL;DR: Li2GeTeO6 as discussed by the authors exhibits a short cutoff edge (240 nm) with a powder second harmonic generation (SHG) response of 1.3 × KH2PO4 (KDP).
Abstract: Tellurate crystals are attractive for developing new nonlinear optical (NLO) materials in the mid-infrared region due to their wide transmission window. In this work, we report a quaternary tellurate oxide crystal, Li2GeTeO6, which exhibits a short cutoff edge (240 nm) with a powder second harmonic generation (SHG) response of 1.3 × KH2PO4 (KDP). The reported material reveals the largest band gap in the Li2MTeO6 (M = tetravalent cation) family. The first-principles calculations were used to illustrate the origin of the NLO effect. These results highlight the band gap engineering based on the cation substitution strategy for designing new NLO materials with balanced optical properties.

TL;DR: In this article , a low-symmetrized phosphite anionic group (HPO3)2- is proposed as a new NLO-active group that exhibits a larger optical anisotropy and second-harmonic generation (SHG) coefficients than (PO4)3-.
Abstract: Ultraviolet (UV) nonlinear optical (NLO) materials have crucial practical applications in modern laser science and technology. Phosphates are promising candidates for searching UV NLO materials. However, small optical anisotropy of high-symmetrized (PO4)3- tetrahedron hinders phase matching (PM) in the UV wavelength range. Herein, a low-symmetrized phosphite anionic group (HPO3)2- is proposed as a new NLO-active group that exhibits a larger optical anisotropy and second-harmonic generation (SHG) coefficients than (PO4)3-. Accordingly, two phosphites, (C(NH2)3)2Zn(HPO3)2 and [Al2(HPO3)3(H2O)3]·H2O, that contain (HPO3)2- groups are screened out and synthesized. The UV absorption edges of the two compounds are 6.18 and 6.23 eV, respectively. (C(NH2)3)2Zn(HPO3)2 exhibited an SHG intensity of 1 times that of KDP at 1064 nm. This work proposes a new NLO-active fundamental building unit (FBU) and a new materials system for searching NLO materials.

TL;DR: In this paper , the metal sulfamates containing [NH2SO3] groups were systematically explored for nonlinear optical (NLO) crystal discovery in non-π-conjugated systems with the heteroatomic tetrahedra.
Abstract: Nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals are very important for laser technology, but the performances of available NLO crystals are still insufficient for increasing demand. Recently, the exploration of new NLO crystals in non-π-conjugated systems with the heteroatomic tetrahedra is attracting a lot of interest. In this work, we systematically explore the metal sulfamates containing [NH2SO3] groups and four metal sulfamates, namely, Ca(NH2SO3)2·4H2O, Ca(NH2SO3)2·H2O, Pb(NH2SO3)2·H2O, and Pb(NH2SO3)2 were synthesized by aqueous solution and hydrothermal methods. Notably, these metal sulfamates exhibit different crystal structures and optical properties owing to the diverse arrangement of the functional groups in their structures. In addition, due to hydrogen bond regulation, the centrosymmetric (CS) compound Ca(NH2SO3)2·4H2O can transform into noncentrosymmetric (NCS) Ca(NH2SO3)2·H2O, leading to NLO activity. Experimental characterizations and theoretical analysis reveal that these metal sulfamates are ultraviolet transparent and suitable for developing new NLO materials.

TL;DR: A new cesium hydroxyborate CsB3O4(OH)2 was designed and synthesized by a hydrothermal method as discussed by the authors , which has a wide transparent window in the DUV spectral range and a large birefringence.
Abstract: A new cesium hydroxyborate CsB3O4(OH)2, was designed and synthesized by a hydrothermal method. Remarkably, CsB3O4(OH)2 presents novel [B3O4(OH)2]∞ chains formed by [B3O4(OH)2] fundamental building blocks (FBBs). The report of less common [B3O4(OH)2] FBBs and [B3O4(OH)2]∞ chains in CsB3O4(OH)2 enriches the structural diversity of hydroxyborates. In addition, CsB3O4(OH)2 has a wide transparent window in the DUV spectral range and a large birefringence.
