Photonic Synapses with Ultra-Low Energy Consumption Based on Vertical Organic Field-Effect Transistors

Neuromorphic circuits emulating the bio‐brain functionality via artificial devices have achieved a substantial scientific leap in the past decade. However, even with the advent of highly advanced bio‐inspired algorithms, the artificial intelligence based on current neuromorphic circuits is lagging behind significantly when compared with naturally evolved biological neural circuits. This massive and intriguing discrepancy is partly due to the incomprehensive understanding of bio‐brain operating mechanism, which relies heavily on the extremely complexed entangled 3D hierarchical neural networks. Configuring 3D neuromorphic hardware with combined computing and memory functionalities, coupled with compatible progress of software algorithms, can be an inevitable route to surmount the limitation encountered by current 2D artificial circuits. Herein, referring to the neuron configuration in 3D perspective together with detailed signal generation and propagation mechanism, the von Neumann configuration is compared with state‐of‐the‐art in‐memory computing architecture, and the development and perspectives of 3D in‐memory computing neuromorphic circuits are highlighted.

Bio‐Inspired 3D Artificial Neuromorphic Circuits

In recent years, the rapid increase in the data volume to be processed has led to urgent requirements for highly efficient computing paradigms. Brain-like computing that mimics the way the biological brain processes information has attracted growing interest due to extremely high energy efficiency. Particularly, dynamics play an essential role in neural spike information processing. Here, we offer a brief review and perspective in the field of electrolyte-gated neuromorphic transistors for brain-like dynamic computing. We first introduce the biological foundation of dynamic neural functions. Then dynamic synaptic plasticity, dynamic dendritic integration, dynamic neural functions, and bio-inspired somatosensory systems realized based on the electrolyte-gated neuromorphic transistors are presented. At last, conclusions and perspectives are given.

Linear Classification Function Emulated by Pectin-Based Polysaccharide-Gated Multiterminal Neuron Transistors

Metal oxide semiconductors thin film transistors (TFTs) have become important candidates for neuromorphic computing applications by simulating the functions of biological synapses. In this article, optoelectronic synaptic transistors with tunable plasticity are achieved by utilizing printed indium tin oxide (ITO) channel and Ag/ITO dual-layer contact electrodes. The Ag/ITO dual-layer electrodes not only provide ITO TFTs with high electrical performance but enabled them with tunable plasticity. Under the synergistic electrical and optical modulation, both the short- and long-term plasticity in the printed ITO synaptic TFTs are emulated. These achievements are of great significance for applying printed synaptic transistors in optoelectronic neuromorphic hardware.

Recent advances in emerging neuromorphic computing and perception devices

Capacitively coupled neuromorphic system is very promising for spiking dynamic computing because of the inherent advantages of low static power and large fan-out. Here, flexible multigate indium–gallium–zinc–oxide (IGZO) Schottky thin-film transistors (TFTs) with configurable neuromorphic functions are investigated. The channel layer can be effectively modulated by the multigate terminals through electric-double-layer coupling effect. Plastic modulation of Schottky barrier is also demonstrated, which is highly desirable for dynamic synaptic weight modulation. Furthermore, configurable spiking dynamic functions, such as paired-pulse facilitation (PPF) and high-frequency spike filter, are also emulated in such flexible oxide-based Schottky neuromorphic device.
