Entrepreneurial competencies of undergraduate students: The case of universities in Nigeria

In our paper ‘New venture survival: A review and extension’ in the Interna-tional Journal of Management Reviews, we synthesized more than five decadesof entrepreneurship, management and sociology research on the reasons whysome new ventures survive and others fail. Based on our review and analysis, weprovided an up-to-date systematization of the literature and a framework thatincludes important extensions to Stinchcombe’s seminal work. Coad and Storeycriticized our framework for basing venture outcome on skill—something thatcan be influenced by entrepreneurs and other stakeholders. In this paper, weargue that: (i) the distinction between survival and performance matters whenthinking about the antecedents of these constructs; (ii) gambling is an incom-patible analogy for entrepreneurship; and (iii) psychological processes cannotbe ignored when studying new ventures’ survival. We also correct some pointsmade by Coad and Storey about our findings. We encourage future studies onnew venture survival to be cautious of adopting a view of venturing as a ‘game ofchance’—which is, in our perspective, a potentially discouraging view for peoplepursuing entrepreneurship.

The role of skill versus luck in new venture survival

Green entrepreneurship has a huge role in solving environmental degradation and social problems. As today’s youth are tomorrow’s entrepreneurs, enhancing their green entrepreneurial intention will contribute to the sustainable development of economy in the future. The existing literature has examined the green entrepreneurial intention of college students based on self-efficacy, entrepreneurial creativity, entrepreneurship education, financial support, sustainable development values, and other influencing factors. However, these studies focus on net effect of factors on the results of college students’ green entrepreneurial intention, ignoring the combination of multiple factors, and the relationship between different configurations of factors and the results of college students’ green entrepreneurial intention. Therefore, this study aimed to understand and analyze the influence of the complex relationship between multiple antecedents (entrepreneurial creativity, future self-continuity, green cognition, entrepreneurship culture, entrepreneurship education, and financial support) on college students’ green entrepreneurial intention from a comprehensive perspective. Based on 207 questionnaires collected from colleges in the coastal cities of China, this study used the fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis method for data analysis. The results showed three dominant paths of great significance to college students’ high green entrepreneurial intention: entrepreneurial creativity—green cognition—dominant path; entrepreneurial creativity—financial support—dominant path; and the future self-continuity—entrepreneurship culture—entrepreneurship education—dominant path. The results of this study can help college educators to plan courses on innovative thinking and green entrepreneurship to improve college students’ entrepreneurial creativity and green cognitive ability.

Factors That Can Promote the Green Entrepreneurial Intention of College Students: A Fuzzy Set Qualitative Comparative Analysis

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were proposed in 2015 to promote worldwide improvements in human wellbeing. Governments have different levels of commitment to the SDGs, reflected in the SDG index, which shows the compliance of each country, detailing each score by SDG. The Global Entrepreneurship Monitor reports show the advances of global entrepreneurship in various countries, while the Global Competitiveness Report shows their competitiveness. This analysis was based on environmental, social, and economic outcomes of SDGs from the SDG index 2018. We also evaluated data from the Global Competitiveness Report 2018 and the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor report 2018. A partial least-squares structural-equation-modeling technical analysis was used. It was found that social SDGs (0.796) and environmental SDGs (0.196) had a positive influence on economic SDGs; also, economic SDGs had a positive influence on the continuation of entrepreneurship (0.590) and competitiveness (0.918). The model explained 34.8% of the continuation of entrepreneurship and 84.3% of that of competitiveness. The outcomes of the bootstrapping test were used to evaluate whether the path coefficients were significant. This information can help governments and organizations to recognize the impact of support and promote compliance with SDGs and the continuation of entrepreneurship and competitiveness. Moreover, this information provides the means to analyze the influence of open innovation in accomplishing the SDGs faster. The study’s novelty is the use of the PLS-SEM technique to analyze these worldwide indicators.

This study examines entrepreneurship. It focuses on the effect of tenacity and future self-continuity on inter-temporal risky choice in entrepreneurial context. A total of 129 Chinese undergraduates participated in this survey. The results formulate that tenacity positively correlates with the risky choices and inter-temporal risky choices, in which endurance, commitment and challenge play a major role in the impact of tenacity on entrepreneurial choice. Meanwhile, future self-continuity predicts the risk-return of the subjects. Higher future self-continuity corresponds to higher expected inter-temporal risk-return. Furthermore, the multivariable regression analysis shows that there is a reciprocal effect when tenacity and future self-continuity work together on subjects’ inter-temporal risky decision-making. Future self-continuity slightly mitigates both the pursuit of risky-return and the tolerance of time delay for the subjects with high tenacity. That implies their worthwhile goal is to seek a smooth income rather than to pursue an extreme high risk-return. These findings extend the research on personality, choice and entrepreneurship as well as providing a guiding significance to the start-up.
