TL;DR: The final results from the pionic hydrogen X-ray experiment at PSI are presented in this article, where the strong interaction energy level shift e 1s and the total decay width Γ 1s of the 1s state of pion hydrogen were obtained from a precise measurement of the 3p-1s Xray line.

Abstract: We have measured the Doppler broadening of neutron time-of-flight spectra from the reaction π− p → π0 + n in atomic states From the data, we infer that the kinetic energy distribution of π− p-atoms in liquid and gaseous hydrogen contains discrete ‘high-energy’ components with energies as high as 200 eV attributed to Coulomb de-excitation In liquid hydrogen, evidence for Coulomb de-excitation transitions with Δn = 2 has been found
