By using the polynomial approximation and superquadric functions in the Rayleigh-Ritz procedure, a unified method has been proposed to analyze conducting hollow waveguides of a large class of cross sections in our previous paper. Some useful and complicated cross-sectional waveguides in the microwave system, namely, eccentric annular, pentagonal, L-shaped, single-ridged, and double-ridged waveguides are analyzed in this paper. Compared with other numerical methods, this method has the advantages of being straightforward, accurate, and computational effective.

Analysis of metallic waveguides of a large class of cross sections using polynomial approximation and superquadric functions

An efficient boundary contour mode-matching method (BCMM) is applied to the analysis of hollow waveguides whose cross section is enclosed by curved and planar boundaries. The TE and TM modes are expressed in terms of circular waves whose cutoff wavenumber and amplitudes are the unknowns of the problem. The boundary conditions are imposed with a new line-integral extended over the closed contour. The weighting functions introduced and the use of the transformations between plane and circular waves avoid the conventional numerical integrations. In addition, the conversion between the different field representations is accelerated due to the use of the fast Fourier transform (FFT). Finally, the numerical results are shown as a comparison of our approach with other numerical methods. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Int J RF and Microwave CAE, 2005.

Eigenmodes of waveguides using a boundary contour mode‐matching method with an FFT scheme

A new classification scheme of waveguides with complex cross-sections is described. Only hollow metallic structures with a single contour are considered. Two new geometrical parameters, the number of ridges and the number of degrees of freedom, are proposed for evaluation of some of these waveguides. Transmission line characterisation criteria such as the type of propagating mode, and geometrical peculiarities and calculation methods are analysed.
