Aggregation-Induced Emission: Together We Shine, United We Soar!

Recent startling interest for lanthanide luminescence is stimulated by the continuously expanding need for luminescent materials meeting the stringent requirements of telecommunication, lighting, electroluminescent devices, (bio-)analytical sensors and bio-imaging set-ups. This critical review describes the latest developments in (i) the sensitization of near-infrared luminescence, (ii) “soft” luminescent materials (liquid crystals, ionic liquids, ionogels), (iii) electroluminescent materials for organic light emitting diodes, with emphasis on white light generation, and (iv) applications in luminescent bio-sensing and bio-imaging based on time-resolved detection and multiphoton excitation (500 references).

Lanthanide-based luminescent hybrid materials.

TiO 2 photocatalysis is widely used in a variety of applications and products in the environmental and energy fields, including self-cleaning surfaces, air and water purification systems, sterilization, hydrogen evolution, and photoelectrochemical conversion. The development of new materials, however, is strongly required to provide enhanced performances with respect to the photocatalytic properties and to find new uses for TiO 2 photocatalysis. In this review, recent developments in the area of TiO 2 photocatalysis research, in terms of new materials from a structural design perspective, have been summarized. The dimensionality associated with the structure of a TiO 2 material can affect its properties and functions, including its photocatalytic performance, and also more specifically its surface area, adsorption, reflectance, adhesion, and carrier transportation properties. We provide a brief introduction to the current situation in TiO 2 photocatalysis, and describe structurally controlled TiO 2 photocatalysts which can be classified into zero-, one-, two-, and three-dimensional structures. Furthermore, novel applications of TiO 2 surfaces for the fabrication of wettability patterns and for printing are discussed.

Luminescent chemodosimeters for bioimaging.

By employing mixed inorganic precursors and finely tuning the ageing conditions, crack-free surfactant-templated mesoporous titania films of thickness up to 4 µm have been obtained efficiently. Low angle XRD and TEM show that the mesostructure of the multilayered films was maintained when calcined at the developed temperature of 350 °C, but those films developed crystallinity. A novel type of mesoporous structure featuring highly crystallized anatase framework was produced by a two-step sintering process. Dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) were fabricated from these films. The short circuit photocurrent (Isc), open circuit voltage (Voc), and thus the performance of the cell was greatly enhanced when adopting a two-step sintering process, confirming that high crystallinity of the TiO2 electrode is required for high efficiency conversion.

Highly crystallized mesoporous TiO2 films and their applications in dye sensitized solar cells

Phosphorescent copper(I) complexes show great promise as emitters in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). However, most copper(I) complexes are neither soluble nor stable toward sublimation and, hence, not amenable to the typical methods to fabricate OLEDs. In this work, a compound 3-(carbazol-9-yl)-5-((3-carbazol-9-yl)phenyl)pyridine (CPPyC) was designed as both a good ligand and host matrix. Codeposition of CPPyC and copper iodide (CuI) gives luminescent films with photoluminescent quantum yields (PLQY) as high as 100%. A dimeric copper(I) complex Cu2I2(CPPyC)4 is formed in the thin film, characterized by X-ray absorption spectroscopy. A series of simple, highly efficient green-emitting OLEDs were demonstrated by using the codeposited film as an emissive layer. A device comprised of only CPPyC and CuI gave an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 12.6% (42.3 cd/A) at 100 cd/m2, while a device with tailored hole and electron transporting layers gave an efficiency of 15.7% (51.6 cd/A) at the same brightness.

Simple and High Efficiency Phosphorescence Organic Light-Emitting Diodes with Codeposited Copper(I) Emitter

FAPbI3 Flexible Solar Cells with a Record Efficiency of 19.38% Fabricated in Air via Ligand and Additive Synergetic Process

Hybrid photovoltaic (PV) devices based on copper-phthalocyanine and fullerene combined with ZnO nanowire array as direct charge transport paths were fabricated. The optimized device with ZnO nanowire has a more than fourfold increase in PV performance than the device without nanowire. The former has an open circuit voltage of 0.46 V, a short circuit current of 3.86 mA/cm2, a fill factor of 0.30, and a power conversion efficiency of 0.53%. The hybrid device based on ZnO nanowires with improved PV performance suggests a way for fabrication of PV device with more exciton dissociation interface area and continuous carrier transport paths.
