07 Mar 2005TL;DR: In this paper, a coplanar waveguide (CPW) fed circular disc monopole antenna for ultra wideband (UWB) applications was proposed and demonstrated numerically and experimentally to yield an ultra wide -10 dB bandwidth with omnidirectional radiation patterns over the entire bandwidth.
Abstract: This paper proposes and studies a novel design of a coplanar waveguide (CPW) fed circular disc monopole antenna for ultra wideband (UWB) applications. A circular disc monopole printed on a dielectric substrate and fed by a 50 /spl Omega/ CPW on the same layer is demonstrated numerically and experimentally to yield an ultra wide -10 dB bandwidth with omnidirectional radiation patterns over the entire bandwidth. The effect of the disc dimension on the antenna performance is also investigated.

06 Mar 2006TL;DR: In this article, a broadband planar antenna structure for a DVB-H receiver is presented, which is based on the compact coupling element antenna structure that was earlier applied for GSM systems.
Abstract: For the reception of terrestrial television, traditionally Yagi or whip antennas are used. Due to their large size they cannot be used in the reception of digital television on handheld devices (DVB-H), which operate at the frequency band 470 – 702 MHz. The DVB-H system is under development and small internal antenna solutions for handheld devices are not yet available. Due to the long wavelengths, any antenna placed inside a portable terminal will be electrically small. The antenna volume is the fundamental factor determining its performance. With traditional microstrip antennas such as PIFAs the required bandwidth could not be obtained inside a pocket-size terminal. Therefore, a broadband planar antenna structure for a DVB-H receiver is presented in this paper. The antenna structure is based on the compact coupling element antenna structure [1] that was earlier applied for GSM systems [2].

TL;DR: The present paper shows a conventional design for dual-band operation and how it can be improved for a quad-band design through the FracPlane technique, which encapsulates both basic shaping of a groundplane to a more sophisticated space-filling and/or multilevel design for further size reduction and multi-band performance enhancement.
Abstract: INTRODUCTION Mobile devices are in a constant state of evolution given the increasing features and frequencies available worldwide. Today, global handset functionality is becoming an important consideration influencing customer purchasing habits. Industry dynamics have increased the drive for smaller and multi-functional wireless devices. Antenna technology has played a key role in influencing the end form factor of these mobile devices because without the antenna the device is not wireless. The present paper shows a conventional design for dual-band operation (GSM900-DCS1800) and how it can be improved for a quad-band design (GSM850-GSM900-DCS1800-DCS1900) through the FracPlane technique. This technique encapsulates both basic shaping of a groundplane to a more sophisticated space-filling and/or multilevel design for further size reduction and multi-band performance enhancement [1,4].

05 Mar 2012TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined how the bandwidth of artificial magnetic conductors (AMC) can be greatly increased when loaded with negative-inductance Non-Foster circuits, achieving a bandwidth greater than 80% at resonant frequency of 263 MHz.
Abstract: We examine how the bandwidth of artificial magnetic conductors (AMC) can be greatly increased when loaded with negative-inductance Non-Foster circuits. This increase in bandwidth is achieved by enhancing the structural inductance of the AMC by combining it in parallel with a negative inductance, thus achieving a bandwidth that exceeds what is possible with passive approaches. A prototype VHF-UHF active AMC was fabricated and measured which achieved a bandwidth greater than 80% at resonant frequency of 263 MHz.

05 Mar 2012TL;DR: In this article, an embroidered body-worn antenna using conductive fibers (E-fibers) is presented, where the antenna's conductive surfaces were fabricated using precise and automated embroidering techniques to produce fully flexible antenna elements attached to regular fabrics and clothing.
Abstract: This paper presents an embroidered body-worn antenna using conductive fibers (E-fibers). The antenna's conductive surfaces were fabricated using precise and automated embroidering techniques to produce fully flexible and conformal antenna elements attached to regular fabrics and clothing. These E-fiber antennas offer desirable mechanical properties without undermining electrical performance for body-worn, on-clothing applications at radio frequencies (RF). In this study, we used an embroidered asymmetric meandered flare (AMF) dipole antenna to validate the textile antenna's performance. Its excellent RF performance was found comparable to conventional printed antennas. Therefore, these new E-fiber antennas may be integrated into scarves, handbags, shirts, coats or hand bands for convenient carefree health monitoring and wideband communications.
