TL;DR: Insights into inherent properties of robust systems will provide a better understanding of complex diseases and a guiding principle for therapy design.
Abstract: Robustness is a ubiquitously observed property of biological systems. It is considered to be a fundamental feature of complex evolvable systems. It is attained by several underlying principles that are universal to both biological organisms and sophisticated engineering systems. Robustness facilitates evolvability and robust traits are often selected by evolution. Such a mutually beneficial process is made possible by specific architectural features observed in robust systems. But there are trade-offs between robustness, fragility, performance and resource demands, which explain system behaviour, including the patterns of failure. Insights into inherent properties of robust systems will provide us with a better understanding of complex diseases and a guiding principle for therapy design.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors show two principles for eliminating these indeterminacies: (i) minimal distortion principle; (ii) inverse minimal distortion principle (IMD) for blind source separation.
Abstract: In blind source separation, the number of sensors is usually assumed to be equal to the number of sources In this case, an indeterminacy appears with which any linear transform of an estimated source signal can also be considered another estimation of the source signal Moreover, in the case that the number of sensors is greater than the number of sources, another indeterminacy arises due to the redundancy of the sensors Although these indeterminacies are often considered unsubstantial and have been eliminated without definite bases, an appropriate normalization of the separator is important to enhance the accuracy of the separation result, particularly in the case of a convolutive mixture The paper shows two principles for eliminating these indeterminacies: (i) minimal distortion principle; (ii) inverse minimal distortion principle

TL;DR: Based on the proposed method, DARwIn-OP is developed which meets the requirements for an open humanoid platform and has an expandable system structure, high performance, simple maintenance, familiar development environment, and affordable prices.
Abstract: This paper presents the design method for a humanoid which has a network based modular structure and a standard PC architecture. Based on the proposed method, we developed DARwIn-OP which meets the requirements for an open humanoid platform. DARwIn-OP has an expandable system structure, high performance, simple maintenance, familiar development environment, and affordable prices. All resources of DARwIn-OP including source codes, circuit diagrams, mechanical CAD files, and parts information will be opened to the public.

Abstract: This paper presents a new nonintrusive appliance load monitoring technique based on the integer programming. Nonintrusive appliance load monitoring is a problem to identify the operating conditions of the electric appliances in a house only by observing the overall load current and voltage. Since the overall load current is expressed as a superposition of each current of the operating appliance, the monitoring problem can be formulated as an integer quadratic programming problem by expressing the operating conditions as integer variables. This problem is solvable with sufficiently small computational burden thanks to the recent development of the commercial software. The proposed method does not require the relearning even when a new appliance is installed in the house. Furthermore, the proposed formulation is applicable to cases that some appliance has multiple modes, and cases that some same-type appliances operate simultaneously. Usefulness of the proposed technique is verified through some experimental results.
