Nationalism has been one of the most powerful and perhaps also one of the most destructive forces shaping the course of Balkan history in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. After a century of national assertion the Balkans came to be known as the ’powder keg’ of Europe on the eve of World War I. The explosiveness of regional politics was due to the interplay of great-power imperialisms with the conflicting claims and aspirations of the region’s nationalities. How these claims and aspirations were shaped and articulated, and what were the origins of the national assertiveness that underlay them, are not only major questions in the political and intellectual history of south-eastern Europe, but also important issues with intrinsic theoretical significance for the understanding of the phenomenon of nationalism. The origins of militant Balkan nationalism can be traced in the so-called period of Enlightenment and ’national awakening’ in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. An examination of this process of intellectual and cultural change, free from the preconceptions and sensitivities of national attachments, can provide read more read less

From Africa to Auschwitz: How German South West Africa Incubated Ideas and Methods Adopted and Developed by the Nazis in Eastern Europe

The German terms Lebensraum and Konzentrationslager, both widely known because of their use by the Nazis, were not coined by the Hitler regime. These terms were minted many years earlier in reference to German South West Africa, now Namibia, during the first decade of the twentieth century, when Germans colonized the land and committed genocide against the local Herero and Nama peoples. Later use of these borrowed words suggests an important question: did Wilhelmine colonization and genocide in Namibia influence Nazi plans to conquer and settle Eastern Europe, enslave and murder millions of Slavs and exterminate Gypsies and Jews? This article argues that the German experience in Namibia was a crucial precursor to Nazi colonialism and genocide and that personal connections, literature, and public debates served as conduits for communicating colonialist and genocidal ideas and methods from the colony to Germany. read more read less

The advent of Protestantism in sixteenth-century France meant far more than an altered set of theological tenets and new forms of prayer and ritual. It also entailed a careful reordering, delimitation and supervision of the community. To this end, the French Calvinist reformers developed an especially strong ecclesiastical polity and within it accorded a powerful place to the lay members of the congregation. These laymen added to and supplanted functions which had been traditionally assigned to the ordained ministry of pre-Reformation Europe. The Reformed Churches of France and, in particular, the consistory offered a degree of lay control over local ecclesiastical affairs which had been unknown read more read less

The propaganda routinely portrayed 40,000 black savages roaming the Rhineland at will, raping the women, infecting the population, and polluting the blood. Athough some aspects of this campaign and its effects, notably in Britain and America, have been studied,2 it remains to establish the actual situation in the Rhineland along with the reasons therefor, and to compare it with the allegations spread round the world. Several questions have not been fully explored. For example, given the intense propaganda and its initial success, both predictable, why did France send indigenous troops into Germany? Indeed, Lord Derby, the British ambassador in Paris, remarked, ’I cannot think of anything more calculated to irritate the Germans’.3 Many people, including some British officials, assumed that France intended to humiliate Germany.4 In fact, as Derby and read more read less
