TL;DR: Total heterotrophic bacteria associated with the seaweeds were found to be more abundant than in water samples, and Bacillus, Corynebacterium, Vibrio, Alcaligenes andseudomonas were the genera commonly encountered.
Abstract: The heterotrophic bacterial population associated with seaweeds (Enteromorpha sp.,Chaetomorpha sp. andHypnea sp.) and water of the Vellar Estuary, Porto Novo, were estimated. Total heterotrophic bacteria associated with the seaweeds were found to be more abundant than in water samples. Representative cultures were isolated and their morphological and biochemical characteristics were studied. In addition, production of amylase, lipase and proteinase of the isolates was also studied.Bacillus, Corynebacterium, Vibrio, Alcaligenes andPseudomonas were the genera commonly encountered. The role of these bacteria associated with seaweeds is discussed.

TL;DR: Significant differences were observed in glycogen metabolism of Anabas testudineus exposed to an acute lethal and a sublethal concentration of furadan and liver glycogen levels showed an increase presumably at the expense of fuel reserves of the muscle.
Abstract: Significant differences were observed in glycogen metabolism ofAnabas testudineus exposed to an acute lethal (1.56 mg/litre) and a sublethal (0.56 mg/litre) concentration of furadan. At sublethal concentration, the muscle glycogen which was utilized during the early periods of exposure, was replenished in the later period of exposure and at 120 h, the muscle glycogen levels were higher than the control. At higher concentration, the liver glycogen levels showed an increase presumably at the expense of fuel reserves of the muscle.

TL;DR: In this paper, the first order dependence on both NBS and allyl alcohol has been studied and a rate law in agreement with experimental results has been derived and a mechanism is proposed.
Abstract: The kinetics of oxidation of allyl alcohol byN-bromosuccinimide (NBS) has been studied at 35 °C in aqueous medium. The reaction shows first order dependence on bothNBS and allyl alcohol. In fairly high acid concentration, there is no change in the rate of the reaction but at low acid concentration, the rate is considerably enhanced. There is no primary salt effect. At varying mercuric acetate concentrations, the rate constant remains the same. But in the absence of mercuric acetate, the rate is enhanced. The kinetic parameters,E a,Arrhenius factorA, ΔH≠, ΔG≠ and ΔS≠ have been calculated. A rate law in agreement with experimental results has been derived. A mechanism is proposed.

TL;DR: In this paper, the sign combinations of the various modes of vibration have been predicted by calculating the equilibrium dipole moment of the molecules using the virial theorem approach and the results using this method are at variance with those of other methods of choosing the correct signs of the dipole derivatives.

TL;DR: In the laboratory, under choice situation, C. longitarsus preferred shells with greater shell width and shell weight and the scaled first principal component was found to be a reliable estimator of shell size and the hermit crab selected a shell of suitable dimension which fits its body quite closely.
Abstract: In the laboratory, under choice situation,C. longitarsus preferred shells with greater shell width and shell weight. The correlation coefficient values calculated between the crab and shell parameters in the laboratory sample showed that this hermit crab selects a shell of suitable dimension for its occupation. In the multiple regression equations calculated with carapace length against the three shell variables aperture width, shell width and shell weight which are deemed to be important for hermit crabs, the regression coefficient of the variables varied much. The unsealed first principal component explained 84·9% of the total variability of the shell parameters and scaled first principal component explained 95·8% of shell parameters. The scaled first principal component was found to be a reliable estimator of shell size and the hermit crab, if given a choice, selected a shell of suitable dimension which fits its body quite closely.

TL;DR: In this paper, the Koenigsberger ratio was calculated for all the samples and the ratio was used to test the stability of natural remanence magnetisation in the samples, and the mean direction of magnetisation was determined from the three components of the NRM intensity.

TL;DR: Respirometric studies showed that rhizosphere soils were metabolically more active than the control soil, there being no significant difference between the root and tuber Rhizosphere.
