TL;DR: It was shown that escin could inhibit acute inflammation and granuloma formation, cause acceleration of gastrointestinal transit, help recover intestinal motility, and attenuate the formation of postoperative adhesions.
Abstract: Postoperative peritoneal adhesions are common, serious complications of general abdominal and gynecologic surgery that can lead to chronic abdominal pain, intestinal obstruction, and infertility. As yet, there are no ideal drugs that may be prescribed for patients to prevent adhesion formation effectively. In this study the effects of escin, a natural drug, on the various steps of adhesion formation were investigated. The effects of escin on increased vascular permeability induced by acetic acid in a mouse model of acute inflammation, granuloma formation in a subchronic inflammatory rat model, gastrointestinal transit in rats with intestinal paralysis, intestinal motility in postoperative patients, and postoperative adhesion formation in a rat model were observed. It was shown that escin could inhibit acute inflammation and granuloma formation, cause acceleration of gastrointestinal transit, help recover intestinal motility, and attenuate the formation of postoperative adhesions. The findings suggest that escin attenuates the formation of postoperative adhesions by inhibiting inflammation and promoting gastrointestinal transit. Thus it may be concluded that both inhibition of inflammation and increased gastrointestinal motility during the early postoperative period have a positive effect on decreasing the formation of adhesions.

TL;DR: A novel Arg528Gly mutation in the CACNA1S gene that causes HypoPP in a Chinese family is identified, the spectrum of mutations causing Hypo PP is expanded, and a gender difference in the penetrance of the disease is demonstrated.
Abstract: Hypokalemic periodic paralysis (HypoPP) is an autosomal dominant disorder which is characterized by periodic attacks of muscle weakness associated with a decrease in the serum potassium level. The skeletal muscle calcium channel α-subunit gene CACNA1S is a major disease-causing gene for HypoPP, however, only three specific HypoPP-causing mutations, Arg528His, Arg1,239His and Arg1,239Gly, have been identified in CACNA1S to date. In this study, we studied a four-generation Chinese family with HypoPP with 43 living members and 19 affected individuals. Linkage analysis showed that the causative mutation in the family is linked to the CACNA1S gene with a LOD score of 6.7. DNA sequence analysis revealed a heterozygous C to G transition at nucleotide 1,582, resulting in a novel 1,582C→G (Arg528Gly) mutation. The Arg528Gly mutation co-segregated with all affected individuals in the family, and was not present in 200 matched normal controls. The penetrance of the Arg528Gly mutation was complete in male mutation carriers, however, a reduced penetrance of 83% (10/12) was observed in female carriers. No differences were detected for age-at-onset and severity of the disease (frequency of symptomatic attacks per year) between male and female patients. Oral intake of KCl is effective in blocking the symptomatic attacks. This study identifies a novel Arg528Gly mutation in the CACNA1S gene that causes HypoPP in a Chinese family, expands the spectrum of mutations causing HypoPP, and demonstrates a gender difference in the penetrance of the disease.

TL;DR: Electroacupuncture can inhibit the reactive proliferation of the astrocytes after spinal cord injury and prevent formation of the glial scar.
Abstract: Objective To explore the mechanism of acupuncture in treatment of spinal cord injury (SCI). Methods Adult Wistar rats were used to make SCI model by Allen's method. The SCI rats were treated with electroacupuncture (EA) at acupoints of the Governor Vessel for 3 days, 1 week, 2 weeks or 4 weeks. Normal group and spinal cord injury group were used as controls. The number and morphology of astrocytes in each group were investigated by electron microscope, immunohistochemistry and in situs hybridization methods. The expression of glial fibroblast acid protein (GFAP) mRNA in the injured spinal cord was detected by reverse transcription polymerase (RP-PCR). Results The mitochondria and ribosomes of astrocytes in the EA group increased. The number of astrocytes increased after SCI, in gray matter being more than that in the white matter, in the caudal being more than that in the rostral. The expression of GFAP mRNA in the EA group was significantly lower than that in the control group. Conclusion Electroacupuncture can inhibit the reactive proliferation of the astrocytes after spinal cord injury and prevent formation of the glial scar.

TL;DR: In this paper, molecular imprinted polymers (MIPs) were prepared from methacrylic acid as the functional monomer and triallyl isocyanurate as the cross-linker in methanol solution using doxazosin mesylate as the template molecule and 2,2′-azobis-isobutyronitrile as the initiator.
Abstract: Molecular imprinted polymers (MIPs) (diameter is about 1.7 μm) were prepared from methacrylic acid as the functional monomer and triallyl isocyanurate as the cross-linker in methanol solution using doxazosin mesylate as the template molecule and 2,2′-azobis-isobutyronitrile as the initiator. The effects of amount of the cross-linker, the ratio of template molecule and functional monomer, amount of solvent and amount of the radical initiator on the polymerization were examined. Release of the template was performed by continuous extraction with methanol containing 10% acetic acid. These MIPs showed specific binding affinity toward doxazosin mesylate and the imprinting mechanism is discussed. The principal advantage of the method is that the MIPs prepared can recognize doxazosin mesylate and the particles size can be controlled by the amount of initiator and the volume of methanol employed.

TL;DR: Studies on childhood sexual abuses among females revealed that the incidents were not rare, and family environment played an important role, and having well-educated fathers was a preventive factor.
Abstract: OBJECTIVE: To study the risk factors and abusers' characteristics on childhood sexual abuses among female students to provide reference data for preventive measures on child sexual abuse. METHODS: Annonymous questionnaire survey of 701 adult female students in a college about their personal experience on childhood sexual abuses, their home conditions and abusers' characteristics. RESULTS: A total number of 701 female students were surveyed. 115 (22.11%) experienced non-physical contact sexual abuses before the age of 18, including 26 (3.71%) who suffered from attempted and 8 (1.14%) were forced with genital or anal sexual intercourse. 117 (16.69%) said they had suffered from sexual abuse before the age of 16. Most abusers were males (99.4%) and only a small percentage of them (3.2%) used violence. Most non-physical contact sexual abuses were from strangers (78.7%), while 71.3% of physical contact abuses were from acquaintances including 12.5% of them were teachers, 17.5% were neighbors and 21.3% were relatives. The risk factors of child sexual abuses were: frequent use of violence, bad hobbies and poor health conditions of parents, tight family relationships, and living in remarried families. Having well-educated fathers was a preventive factor. CONCLUSION: Studies on childhood sexual abuses among females revealed that the incidents were not rare, and family environment played an important role. Language: zh
