Abstract: An architectural membrane structure preferably includes an aerogel material disposed, for example, between two outer layers. The aerogel can be in monolithic or granular form or can be present in an aerogel composite. A method for manufacturing an architectural membrane structure includes securing an insert, e.g., an aerogel blanket, composite or granular aerogel, between a first and second layer. The architectural membrane structure can be used as a tensioned panel in envelopes such as roofing, overhangs, canopies or in other architectural or structural fabric applications.

Abstract: The invention is directed to highly porous catalyst coated membranes and to sprayable inks and processes for forming catalyst coated membranes. In one aspect, the invention is to a sprayable ink, comprising catalyst particles, polymer electolyte ionomer, and a vehicle for dispersing the catalyst particles and polymer electolyte ionomer. In another aspect, the process comprises the steps of depositing an ink comprising catalyst particles and a vehicle onto a membrane and vaporizing from 40 to 95 weight percent of the vehicle from the sprayed ink under conditions effective to form a catalyst layer on the membrane. Preferably, the depositing and vaporizing steps are alternated to form multiple stacked catalyst layers on the membrane.

Abstract: Aerogel particles having a mean particle size less than 1 micron, products containing the same, processes of making the same, and uses thereof are described. A process of making the particle is also described wherein starting aerogel particles are homogenized or wet milled. The starting aerogel particles can be surface treated during the milling process to prevent agglomeration or aggregation. The aerogel particles can be used in a variety of products and applications.

Abstract: The invention is directed to high surface area graphitized carbon and to processes for making high surface area graphitized carbon. The process includes steps of graphitizing and increasing the surface area of (in either order) a starting carbon material to form high surface area graphitized carbon. The step of increasing the surface area optionally comprises an oxidizing step (e.g., through steam etching) or template removal from composite particles. The invention is also directed to catalyst particles and electrodes employing catalyst particles that are formed from the high surface area graphitized carbon.

Abstract: Tantalum powder capable of providing a small-sized tantalum electrolytic capacitor while maintaining capacity is described. Tantalum powder in the present invention can be characterized in that the CV value is from 200,000 to 800,000 μFV/g, when measured by the following measuring method. Pellets are produced by forming tantalum powder such that the density is 4.5 g/cm3, then the pellets are chemically converted in a phosphoric acid aqueous solution of concentration 0.1 vol. % at a voltage of 6V and a current of 90 mA/g, and the chemically converted pellets are used as measuring samples to measure the CV value in a sulfuric acid aqueous solution of concentration 30.5 vol. % at a temperature of 25° C. under a frequency of 120 Hz and a voltage of 1.5V.

Abstract: A method for fabricating an insulated system such as, for instance, an insulated window unit, includes introducing an insulating material between adjacent walls (12a, 12b) and stabilizing the system. Particulate insulators preferably are introduced in the system by filling an expanded internal volume. Stabilization of the system can be carried out by reducing the pressure within the internal volume. A stabilized insulated system is fabricated by introducing an insulating material between adjacent walls and stabilizing the system. Also disclosed are processes and equipment for filling insulated systems, such as fenestration units, and insulated systems comprising mixed insulating' materials.

The process comprises (a) providing a substrate comprising a passivation layer disposed on a silicon layer; (b) depositing a surface modifying material onto at least a portion of the passivation layer; (c)depositing a composition comprising at least one of metallic nanoparticles comprising a metal or a metal precursor to the metal onto at least a portion of the substrate; and (d) heating the composition such that it forms at least a portion of a photovoltaic conductive feature in electrical contact with the silicon layer, wherein at least one of the composition or the surface modifying material etches a region of the passivation layer. When the surface modifying material is a UV-curable material, the process comprises the additional step of curing the UV-curable material.

The nanoparticle dispersion is then combined with a polymer followed by the removal of the non-aqueous solvent or, alternatively, combined with a monomer, which is polymerized to form the polymer and removal of the solvent, in any order. The droplets are then heated to a reaction temperature of not greater than 700°C to form composite particles comprising said first metal at least partly in an oxide form dispersed on said substrate particles. The composite particles are then collected and are heated at a first treatment temperature no greater than 250°C in the presence of a reducing atmosphere to at least partly convert said oxide form to the metal.

Abstract: A membrane electrode assembly comprises (a) a solid electrolyte polymer membrane; (b) an anode electrocatalyst layer disposed at one surface of the membrane and comprising a first electrocatalyst composition comprising carbon substrate particles and nanoparticles comprising an alloy of platinum and ruthenium disposed on the surface of the substrate particles; (c) a cathode electrocatalyst layer disposed at an opposite surface of the membrane, the cathode layer comprising a second electrocatalyst composition different from the first electrocatalyst composition and comprising carbon substrate particles and nanoparticles comprising platinum disposed on the surface of the substrate particles; and (d) gas diffusion layers disposed over each of the anode and cathode electrocatalyst layers. When operating in a direct methanol fuel cell with an active area of 25 cm2 and under conditions including a supply of IM methanol to the anode electrocatalyst layer at a rate of 3 ml per minute, a supply of air to the cathode electrocatalyst layer at a rate of 400 seem, the membrane electrode assembly provides an output voltage of 0.4 volt and a temperature of 7OoC, provides a power output in excess of 120 mW/cm2 and a normalized performance in excess of 34 mW/mgPt.
