TL;DR: This article analyzed post-construction settlement records of three large sanitary landfills in Los Angeles County, California, to identify the interrelationships between settlement rates and fill depth, length of construction period, and elapsed time measured as median fill age.
Abstract: Observed post-construction settlement records of three large sanitary landfills in Los Angeles County, California, are analyzed to identify the interrelationships between settlement rates and fill depth, length of construction period, and elapsed time measured as median fill age. The field data are then used for comparision with published field and model studies by other investigators. Preliminary conclusions of this analysis indicate the following: (1) The rate of settlement appears to decrease linearly with logarithmic median fill age; and(2) settlement rate increases with fill depth in general. However, there seems to exist a limiting depth. Greater than this limiting depth, there is no significant increase in settlement rate with further increase in depth. This depth for the cases studied is about 100 ft (30.5m).

TL;DR: The use of a 50percent citric acid cleanser in root canals after pulpectomy produced well-cleaned surfaces as shown by scanning electron microscopy.
Abstract: Scanning electron and light microscopy were used to determine the effectiveness of a citric acid-based cleanser in pulp destruction and its use for root canal debridement and cleansing procedures. The use of a 50% citric acid cleanser in root canals after pulpectomy produced well-cleaned surfaces as shown by scanning electron microscopy. Compared with other cleaning agents, this cleanser provided improved penetration of rosin into the dentinal tubules and better wall adaptation of gutta-percha. No contraindication has been encountered in clinical practice. Application of the cleanser directly to the exposed pulp resulted in satisfactory destruction similar to the results obtained with strong acids.

TL;DR: In this paper, a system for stabilizing sensitive apparatus from translational and rotational vibrations of the structure on which the apparatus is mounted uses a conventional bearing or a flexure pivot to achieve angular isolation in series with a compliant isolator for attenuating translational vibrations.
Abstract: A system for stabilizing sensitive apparatus from translational and rotational vibrations of the structure on which the apparatus is mounted uses a conventional bearing or a flexure pivot to achieve angular isolation in series with a compliant isolator for attenuating translational vibrations. Wideband corrective torques are applied to the apparatus by linear actuators connected between the vibrating structure and the sensitive apparatus, in parallel with the isolator and bearing combination. Motion of the apparatus is sensed by rate gyros and angular accelerometers mounted on the sensitive apparatus. These instruments through servomechanism loops, drive the linear actuators to oppose the motions.

TL;DR: The upper floor of a multi-deck pressurized aircraft having frangible floor panels sealing the floor during normal flight conditions yet rupturable under a predetermined environmental condition such as when a relatively high pressure differential exists between the upper cabin and lower cargo compartments.
Abstract: The upper floor of a multi-deck pressurized aircraft having frangible floor panels sealing the floor during normal flight conditions yet rupturable under a predetermined environmental condition such as when a relatively high pressure differential exists between the upper cabin and lower cargo compartments. This may occur, for example, when the cargo compartment is depressurized by inflight explosion or collision. Differential pressure activates the panel destruction apparatus which strikes the frangible floor panels in such manner as to cause them to disintegrate or crumble into small pieces. Typical panels may be chemically strengthened glass, ceramics, etc.

Abstract: An improvement to the controllability of aircraft wherein vortex generators are connected to a control surface in front of the hinge line of the control surface so that when the control surface is deflected, the vortex generators project into the airstream on the opposite side from the deflecting control surface. The action of the vortex generators causes the airflow to remain attached to the control surface at higher angles of attack than would otherwise be possible thus increasing the lift of the airfoil and control surface.

Abstract: For each of three samples of 299 elementary school pupils, 302 junior high school pupils, and 300 senior high school students in a large metropolitan school district, factor analyses of the intercorrelations of the responses to 80 items in The Piers-Harris Children's Self-Concept Scale yielded three major dimensions that were essentially invariant across the three samples: (a) physical appearance, (b) socially unacceptable (bad) behavior, and (c) academic or school status. Variance within a complex domain of emotionality was differentiated among a number of factors such as anxiety, abasement, self-contentment, and self-dissatisfaction that were not invariant across samples. In both the junior high school and senior high school samples identifiable factors of popularity and perceived psychomotor coordination appeared. Implications for writing of items to represent the constructs associated with self-concept are discussed.

TL;DR: In this article, a liquid chemical storage and dispensing unit is described, in which a mobile cart supports upper and lower groups of pressure sealable storage tanks containing liquid chemicals, and a plurality of tank pairs are coupled in parallel between the gas manifold and the liquid chemical collecting manifold.
Abstract: A liquid chemical storage and dispensing unit is disclosed in which a mobile cart supports upper and lower groups of pressure sealable storage tanks containing liquid chemicals. Conduits couple a pressure distributing gas manifold to the upper tanks. Tank pairs comprising one tank each of the upper and lower groups are serially coupled by conduits of equal effective internal dimension extending between an open end within a lower region of the upper tanks and inlet fittings on the lower tanks. An open end in the lower tanks communicates liquid chemical therein via conduits of equal effective internal dimension to a nozzle receiving liquid chemical collecting manifold. A plurality of tank pairs are thereby coupled in parallel between the gas manifold and the liquid chemical collecting manifold providing simultaneous emptying of the tank pairs at an enhanced potential liquid chemical flow rate. In operation, tanks are individually filled with liquid chemical and the cart is transported to a point of use. A gas pressure source coupled to the gas manifold forces liquid chemical through the upper tanks to the lower tanks and from the lower tanks to an outlet coupled to the liquid chemical collecting manifold. Thereafter the pressurized tanks successively feed chemical on demand to coupled sprayers until the last tank is empty.

TL;DR: In this article, a bearing housing for high speed rotating shafts is constructed in two parts with the bearing being of the semi-floating type, where one part of the bearing housing presses against the bearing to resist any axial thrust that may be exerted on the bearing during high speed operation.
Abstract: A bearing housing for high speed rotating shafts wherein the bearing housing is constructed in two parts with the bearing being of the semi-floating type. One part of the bearing housing presses against the bearing to resist any axial thrust that may be exerted on the bearing during high speed operation. The bearing is floating on a lubricant around its outer diameter in the other portion of the two part bearing housing. With the bearing being stationary in the housing, the only critical surface becomes the internal surface between the bearing and the shaft itself. By varying the position of the two parts of the bearing housing, the passage for the lubricant to enter the bearing housing can be located at a near vertical position while permitting desired orientation of the end of the bearing housing.

TL;DR: In this article, a pipe bending device comprising a plurality of spaced cylindrical segments sleeved over a selected location on the flowline with adjacent segments pivotally interconnected to each other on one side of the flow line and end cylinders and piston means on the opposite side of a flowline is introduced.
Abstract: An apparatus for terminating a subsea flowline at an offshore structure by providing a bend in the continuous flowline at the bottom of the offshore structure to provide an upstanding flowline end portion adapted to be secured to the offshore structure. A pipe bending device comprising a plurality of spaced cylindrical segments sleeved over a selected location on the flowline with adjacent segments pivotally interconnected to each other on one side of the flowline and end cylindrical segments pivotally interconnected to each other by a cylinder and piston means on the opposite side of the flowline. The device is fixed to the flowline at an end segment thereof. Actuation of the cylinder and piston means imposes a bending force on the flowline within the cylindrical segments for imparting a bend of selected radius to the flowline within the cylindrical segments. In the method of subsea bending of the flowline, such initial bending forces by the bending device assure bending of the flowline, which is normally under tension during laying, at a desired location as the vessel laying the flowline reduces tension therein to bring the upward rising flowline pipe portion into position for connection to the offshore structure.

Abstract: A method of making a reinforced insulating foam wherein an open weave fabric is tufted with loops similar to the making of a shag rug in the textile industry. Foaming material is then inserted into the open weave fabric on the side opposite that of the tufted fibers and expanded through the fabric and around the fibers. A rigid non-sticking backing plate is used to direct the foam through the woven fabric such that the fabric is at the surface of the composition and thus may be bonded to the container walls. When foamed downwardly, gravity assists to produce a less dense foam and the fibers are straightened by the foaming action.

TL;DR: In this article, a thermal stabilizing barrier is placed a distance from the cold insulation face adjacent to the inner liners, such that boiling will be established adjacent to such barrier and preventing liquid from contacting and penetrating the barrier.
Abstract: Thermally insulated container or tank wall construction for cryogenic fluids such as liquid natural gas (LNG) comprising at least two layers of an insulation material, preferably a fiberglass reinforced urethane foam, having an inner liner, preferably in the form of an aluminum foil-fiberglass cloth combination, in contact with the cryogenic fluid, the inner liner being perforated to permit rapid venting, and a thermal stabilizing barrier or liner between the layers of insulation, the stabilizing barrier also preferably being formed of a combination of fiberglass cloth with a layer of aluminum foil to reduce permeability. The two liners are bonded to the individual layers of insulation and the insulation is in turn bonded to the container or tank wall by a suitable adhesive such as a polyurethane adhesive. In the design of such system, the low permeability thermal stabilization barrier is placed a distance from the cold insulation face adjacent the inner liner equal to or greater than a distance at which boiling will be established adjacent the thermal stabilizing barrier, thereby building up a thin gas layer adjacent to such barrier and preventing liquid from contacting and penetrating the stabilizing barrier.

TL;DR: The three remaining coleoid orders, the Teuthoidea, the Vampyromorpha and the Octopodida include all the remaining living cephalopods, comprising 29 teuthoid or squid families, one vampyROMorph family and 12 octopod families.
Abstract: THE class Cephalopoda is represented by over 10,000 fossil species and about 1,000 living species. Almost the entire fossil record so far described consists of external or internal calcareous shells of the Ammonoidea, the Nautiloidea and some members of the Coleoidea. The subclass Coleoidea includes all but three (Nautilus spp.) of the living species of cephalopods, and is represented in the fossil record largely by the order Belemnitida which is important from the early Jurassic to the Eocene. Another coleoid order, the Sepioidea, including the living Sepia and Spirula have internal calcareous shells, and have left traces from the Upper Jurassic (Voltzia) to the present. The three remaining coleoid orders, the Teuthoidea, the Vampyromorpha and the Octopodida include all the remaining living cephalopods, comprising 29 teuthoid or squid families, one vampyromorph family and 12 octopod families.

Abstract: 1. Careful examination of the peripheral blood vessels is essential in choosing the site for an arteriovenous heterograft. 2. Ischemia of the hand or fingers was avoided by placing upper extremity grafts in the forearm. 3. In the lower extremity, if peripheral pulses are normal, a straight thigh graft is preferred. 4. The recipient vien in the antecubital fossa should be no less than 4 mm in diameter; in the lower extremity the venous anastomosis should be made to the common femoral vein. 5. "Graft hypertension" is a sign of inadequate venous runoff and should be corrected before false aneurysms develop or occlusion of the graft occurs. 6. Most thrombosed grafts can be reopened and should be explored promptly through an incision near the venous end.

TL;DR: The lingual mandibular bone concavity is not pathognomonic but is a radiographic bone entity and the histologic picture of the contents found within the Concavity are probably related to the size and growth of the structures located in the submandibular space and the contiguous area.
Abstract: The lingual mandibular bone concavity is not pathognomonic but is a radiographic bone entity. The origin of the entity and the histologic picture of the contents found within the concavity are probably related to the size and growth of the structures located in the submandibular space and the contiguous area. This accounted for the presence of normal submandibular space tissue contents in this patient and in nine of the ten patients whose conditions are reviewed in the literature. The question of whether a surgical exploration is indicated should be decided in terms of each individual case by the oral surgeon. However, only by performing a surgical exploration and submitting the tissue contents for a histopathologic examination can an accurate diagnosis be made. The general practitioner of dentistry should be aware of this bone entity and be prepared to discuss the condition with the patient and to refer the patient for exploration of the area if appropriate.

Abstract: A housing structure confines a ball-shaped valve member with a flow passage therethrough. One end of the flow passage serves as a cavity to receive a pipeline scraper in the form of a pig ball and a grid retains the pig ball while permitting fluid flow through the passage. The valve ball cavity may register with the chamber of a normally closed magazine to receive a pig ball therefrom or to release a pig ball thereto. The valve ball cavity may also register with one of the two ports of the housing structure to launch or retrieve a pig ball therethrough. The valve ball is completely enclosed by the housing structure with a seal at the entrance to the magazine. The magazine has a bleeder valve to the atmosphere and also has a by-pass valve to equalize the fluid pressure in the magazine with the fluid pressure in the pipeline. The valve ball has compensating freedom to move towards and away from the seal. Manually operable gearing rotates the valve ball 90° between its two alternate positions.
