TL;DR: Both the cochlear and retrocochlear pathology existed in the diabetics with hearing impairment and the average pure-tone thresholds, subjective click threshold and AP reactive threshold were significantly elevated in thediabetics.
Abstract: Bekesy audiometry, impedance audiometry with stapedius reflex test, speech discrimination and the recording of electrocochleography (ECochG) and brain stem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) were performed in 43 diabetics and 43 strictly sex- and age-matched nondiabetic controls. The results revealed that the average pure-tone thresholds, subjective click threshold and AP reactive threshold were significantly elevated in the diabetics. The average speech discrimination maximum score was significantly decreased in the diabetics. The diabetic hearing impairment was characterized by high frequency sensorineural hearing loss. Both the cochlear and retrocochlear pathology existed in the diabetics with hearing impairment.

TL;DR: There is no fascicle specific guidance of regenerating nerve fibers after repair of the transected rat sciatic nerve with Y-tunnelled silicone chambers, suggesting that the size and not the type of fascicle determined the number of attracted axons.
Abstract: The projection of regenerating axons and the specificity of motor reinnervation were studied after repair of the transected rat sciatic nerve with Y-tunnelled silicone chambers. This geometry was used experimentally to face either the proximal tibial or peroneal fascicle with two distal fascicular options usually the distal peroneal and tibial fascicle. A 4 mm gap separated the proximal and distal fascicles. Four weeks after the repair, preferential motor reinnervation could be demonstrated and there were always more axons projecting towards the distal homonymous fascicle. In contrast, if the distal stumps were disconnected from the target no fascicle specific projection of axons was observed. This was true even if segments from the median and ulnar nerve were used to replace either the distal tibial or peroneal segments. It appeared as though the size and not the type of fascicle determined the number of attracted axons. The results suggest that there is no fascicle specific guidance of regenerating nerve fibers.

TL;DR: The distinctive differences of malignant lymphomas types between China and Western countries suggest the possibility of a relationship to environmental factors.
Abstract: We report on 1,082 cases of malignant lymphomas from the files of the Department of Pathology, Chinese PLA General Hospital, Beijing. We found non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHL) in 980 cases (91%) and Hodgkin's disease (HD) in the remaining 102 cases (9%). Among the NHL, the diffuse type was seen in 955 cases (97.4%) and the follicular type in 25 cases (2.6%). Among the diffuse NHL, the pleomorphic type was most frequently found (263 cases or 26.8%), followed in frequency by the mixed small and large cell (163 cases or 16.6%). The large-cell cleaved and noncleaved immunoblastic was found in 139 cases (14.2%), small cleaved cell in 132 cases (13.5%), lymphoblastic convoluted and nonconvoluted in 72 cases (7.3%), the small lymphocytic type in 128 cases (13.1%), plasmacytoid type in 40 cases (4.1%), and Burkitt type in 18 cases (1.8%). Using immunohistocytochemistry, we found T-cell lymphoma in 53% and B-cell lymphoma in 47% of cases. The distinctive differences of malignant lymphomas types between China and Western countries suggest the possibility of a relationship to environmental factors.

TL;DR: The results suggested that the surgical removal of the epileptic focal area in refractory epileptic patients may reduce the increased central somatostatin level, which could play an important part in the pathophysiological process ofRefractory epilepsy.
Abstract: The somatostatin concentrations of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and brain tissue in 16 refractory epileptic patients were measured simultaneously by a radioimmunoassay (RIA) method. An increased level of somatostatin was found in the epileptic foci of cerebral cortex, determined by the cortical EEG. There were significant differences among the epileptic foci (75.58±6.58 pg/mg wet wt, ±SEM), nonfocal tissues (37.04±6.55 pg/mg), and normal tissues of control patients (47.69±10.12 pg/mg),p<0.001 andp<0.05, respectively. The somatostatin concentrations of CSF in 11 epileptic patients were determined before (257.78±19.11 pg/mL) and after (178.36±8.78 pg/mL) the removal of epileptic focal area, and a dramatic decrease of the CSF somatostatin concentration after operation was detected (p<0.01). We also found that the somatostatin level of cerebral scar induced by head injury in cases of posttraumatic epilepsy was highest (106.39±12.41 pg/mg). The results suggested that the surgical removal of the epileptic focal area in refractory epileptic patients may reduce the increased central somatostatin level, which could play an important part in the pathophysiological process of refractory epilepsy.

TL;DR: HLA-DR alleles of 255 healthy northern Chinese donors and 30 IgA nephropathy patients were determined by using a set of 30 different sequence specific oligonucleotide (SSO) probes directed to various DRB alleles, finding that SSO typing gave high gene frequencies for the alleles DR2, DR7 and DR 9 in the northern Chinese Han donors.
Abstract: HLA-DR alleles of 255 healthy northern Chinese donors and 30 IgA nephropathy (IgAN) patients were determined by using a set of 30 different sequence specific oligonucleotide (SSO) probes directed to various DRB alleles. We found that SSO typing gave high gene frequencies for the alleles DR2, DR7 and DR 9 in the northern Chinese Han donors, while we obtained significantly high gene frequency for DRw12 in IgAN, especially in those with massive proteinuria and recurrent gross hematuria, indicating that those who have DRw12 may form a high risk population of IgAN.

TL;DR: The results showed that large amounts of FN were localized in fatty streaks, gelatinous lesions and early atherosclerotic plaques, and it is likely that FN represents a new marker of smooth muscle cell modulated from "contractile" to "synthetic" state.
Abstract: This paper reports the results of a study on the distribution of fibronectin (FN), its form, character and source in atherosclerotic lesions, using immunohistochemistry (PAP method) and immunoelectron microscopic technique. The results showed that large amounts of FN were localized in fatty streaks, gelatinous lesions and early atherosclerotic plaques. The intima smooth muscle cells in atherosclerotic lesions synthesized more FN, and it is likely that FN represents a new marker of smooth muscle cell modulated from "contractile" to "synthetic" state. With the maturation of atherosclerotic plaque, FN did not fill the whole plaque but was concentrated only in the fibrous cap surface and basocentral part of the atheroma. We also proved that procollagen III peptide (PIIIP) distribution in atherosclerotic plaque was similar to that of FN.

TL;DR: Enteric KP infection were strongly implicated in the pathogenesis of AS probably by the mechanism of molecular mimicry with HLA-B 27.
Abstract: Klebsiella pneumonia (KP) infection and HLA-B 27 have been shown to be strongly associated with ankylosing spondylitis (AS). In the present study, faecal cultures were performed and showed faecal carriage rate of KP was much higher in patients with AS (10/30) and hospital volunteers (2/10) than in the non-hospital volunteers (0/20). An octadecapeptide encompassing the shared hexamer between HLA-B 27 and KP nitrogenase residue was synthesized and autoantibodies against this short peptide were detected in sera of patients with AS and Reiter's syndrome (RS) and other related disease and normal controls. The results showed that such autoantibodies were detected in 42.2% of AS and 30% of RS patients yielding positive rate much higher than those found in other control groups. It is concluded that enteric KP infection were strongly implicated in the pathogenesis of AS probably by the mechanism of molecular mimicry with HLA-B 27.

TL;DR: The greatest tumour response was obtained in the group which received MISO followed by radiation and was characterised by extensive fibrosis around the tumour and nearly complete tumour necrosis and Liver cell regeneration was also noted in adjacent liver tissue.
Abstract: The purpose of this study was to generate a selective radiosensitising effect by the intra-hepatic-arterial infusion of misonidazole (MISO). MISO (10 mg) was infused after transcatheter hepatic-arterial embolisation into the livers of rabbits bearing VX2 liver cancer. This procedure was followed by 15 Gy electron irradiation. Evaluation of tumour volume and histological examination was carried out on the 7th day after treatment. The greatest tumour response was obtained in the group which received MISO followed by radiation and was characterised by extensive fibrosis around the tumour and nearly complete tumour necrosis. Liver cell regeneration was also noted in adjacent liver tissue. The advantages of regional infusion of MISO following hepatic-arterial embolisation are: (1) Selectivity increased radiosensitivity of liver cancer alongside very low drug concentration in the plasma. (2) Reduced or absent deleterious side effects of MISO with higher tumour/normal tissue ratios of drug concentration. (3) Reduced cost due to the lower dosage of MISO required for regional infusion.
