TL;DR: The results indicate that GST pi is possibly involved in the mechanism of arsenic detoxification.
Abstract: A glutathione S-transferase (GST) was purified from an arsenic-resistant Chinese hamster ovary cell line, SA7 The SA7 GST was shown to catalyse the conjugation of glutathione and ethacrynic acid, a specific substrate for Pi class GST Its N-terminal amino-acid sequence has 80% identical residues to that of rat GST P and human GST pi Thus, the GST purified from SA7 cells belongs to the Pi family Treatment with Cibacron Blue or ethacrynic acid, which are GST inhibitors, significantly decreased the resistance of SA7 cells to sodium arsenite On the other hand, pretreatment of SA7N cells, a partial revertant of SA7 cells, with sublethal doses of sodium arsenite, cadmium acetate or zinc sulphate resulted in re-elevation of GST activities and the cells regained the arsenic resistance The regained arsenic resistance was well correlated with the levels of GST pi which were induced dose-dependently by zinc sulphate Heat-shock treatment (45 degrees C for 10 min) did not increase GST pi expression or arsenic resistance of SA7N cells The results indicate that GST pi is possibly involved in the mechanism of arsenic detoxification

TL;DR: This study not only reveals how novel insights can be obtained from gene expression profiling, but also highlights a group of highly interacting genes associated with metastasis in ESCC.
Abstract: Microarray profiling of 15 adjacent normal/tumor-matched esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) specimens identified 40 up-regulated and 95 down-regulated genes. Verification of the microarray measurement by quantitative real-time reverse transcription PCR in the same set of samples as well as an additional 15 normal/tumor-matched samples revealed >95% consistency. These signatures can also be used to classify a recently reported ESCC microarray dataset. Moreover, these molecular signatures were used as templates to elucidate their corresponding protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks using the PPI databases, POINT and POINeT. As a result, 18 genes, of which six were not disclosed in the initial expression profile analysis, were found to be able to serve as the minimal discriminators for distinguishing ESCC tumors from normal specimens. Of these discriminators, ten (BGN, COL1A1, COL1A2, MMP9, CD44, FN1, TGFBI, PXN, SPARC and VWF) were associated with tumor metastasis and formed a highly interactive network with the first four molecules as 'hubs'. Our study not only reveals how novel insights can be obtained from gene expression profiling, but also highlights a group of highly interacting genes associated with metastasis in ESCC.

TL;DR: In this paper, a kinetic model based on reaction mechanisms was proposed for the description of the curing behavior of a TGDDM/DDS resin system, which can match the well-established pseudo second order reaction mechanism.
Abstract: A kinetic model based on reaction mechanisms was proposed for the description of the curing behavior of a TGDDM/DDS resin system. The characteristic of this model is the separation of the non-autocatalytic part from the autocatalytic part of the reaction, so the model can match the well-established pseudo second order reaction mechanism, as proposed by many other studies about the epoxide/amine reaction. The present model was compared with two other widely used models for the autocatalytic curing behavior of epoxide/amine system, i.e., an equation based on a single rate constant and another based on pure phenomenological analysis, by using DSC data. It was found that the reaction rate calculated from this new model can fit the DSC empirical result much better than those calculated from the other two models. Parallel studies on some other resins, such as the DGEBA/m-PDA system, also proved the superiority of this kinetic model. Results have revealed that the new model was valid for most of the epoxide/1o-amine systems studied. A discrepancy did appear as the epoxide/amine molar ratio and/or the isothermal curing temperature reached certain limits, owing to the occurrence of side reactions.

TL;DR: In this paper, 3-Sulfolenes serve as butadienyl anion equivalents and this stragegy has been applied to the preparations of substituted dienes and the total synthesis of natural products.
Abstract: 3-Sulfolenes are easily converted to the corresponding 1,3-dienes by cheletropic removal of SO2. In addition, the generation of 3-sulfolenyl anions are achieved under several reaction conditions. Therefore, 3-sulfolenes serve as butadienyl anion equivalents and this stragegy has been applied to the preparations of substituted dienes and the total synthesis of natural products.

TL;DR: In this paper, the Gibbs sampler approach is used to estimate the posterior marginals and reliability of multivariate life distributions, from complete and type-II censored samples, using Bayes methods.
Abstract: Powerful computational techniques for estimating the parameters and the reliability function of complex life distributions, using Bayes methods, from complete and type-II censored samples are given. The Gibbs sampler approach brings considerable conceptual and computational simplicity to the calculation of the posterior marginals and reliability. Considering constrained parameter and truncated data problems in multivariate life distributions, the Gibbs sampler procedure is easy to implement for sets of simulated data. >

TL;DR: The results indicate that menadione is toxic to cardiomyocytes, and that the increase of intracellular Ca2+ is related to the mechanism of cardiotoxicity of menADione.
Abstract: Cardiotoxicity of menadione was elucidated in neonatal rat cardiomyocytes. When incubated with menadione, contraction of myocytes initially slowed down and eventually stopped. Later blebs appeared on the cell surface, leading to cell degeneration. During the time of diminished cellular contraction, a large portion of endogenous ATP was depleted whilst intracellular Ca2+ levels were increased. However, if menadione was washed out prior to termination of contraction, the myocytes survived and most of the cells resumed regular contraction. Preincubation of the cells with diltiazem (a Ca2+ antagonist), or fura-2 acetoxymethyl ester (a chelate for Ca2+), or antipain (a proteinase inhibitor) suppressed menadione's ability for cellular damage. These results indicate that menadione is toxic to cardiomyocytes, and that the increase of intracellular Ca2+ is related to the mechanism of cardiotoxicity of menadione.

TL;DR: In this paper, phase transfer catalysts (PTC) promoted synthesis of sulfur- and phosphorus-ylide complexes of Pd(II), Pt(II) and Au(I).
Abstract: Phase-transfer catalysts (PTC) promoted synthesis of sulfur- and phosphorus-ylide complexes of Pd(II), Pt(II) and Au(I). Because in most cases, the presence of PTC enhances the rate of formation of ylide complexes, this method is advantageous over the conventional one under anhydrous conditions. Reactions of these ylide complexes are described. Basic hydrolysis of dppm (dppm = Ph2PCH2PPh2) in Pt-dppm complexes was also promoted by PTC and produces PPh2Me and PPh2O− (or PPh2OH) ligands. Other products from various Pt-dppm reactions are discussed.

Abstract: 3-(Phenylthio)-3-sulfolene (4) underwent bridged dialkylative cyclization with 2-methylene-1,3-diiodopropane to give the bridged bicyclic 3-sulfolene 23, and spirodialkylation with 1,4-diiodobutane and 1,5-diiodopentane to give the spiro bicyclic 3-sulfolenes 15 as the major product. The reaction of 4 with 1,3-diiodopropane led to the fused bicyclic 2-sulfolene 12. 3-(Phenylthio)-3-sulfolenes bearing an ω-iodoalkyl group at the C-2 position gave the fused bicyclic 2-sulfolenes 28 and/or the spiro bicyclic 3-sulfolene 29 depending on the chain length.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a new algorithm for stereo matching which makes use of simultaneous feature matching, surface reconstruction and segmentation, which yields a rich description of a scene in terms of global surface patches and closed surface boundaries.
Abstract: The authors present a new algorithm for stereo matching which makes use of simultaneous feature matching, surface reconstruction and segmentation. Each of these three phases is described. The algorithm integrates these three related subprocesses in the process of extracting surfaces from stereo data. The integration is synergetic: the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. After the segmentation phase, each segmented surface is bounded by a closed boundary. The algorithm yields a rich description of a scene in terms of global surface patches and closed surface boundaries. Experimental results are included for a pair of stereo images of an aerial view of the Pentagon building. >
