TL;DR: In this article, the photophysical properties of 2-phenylbenzothiazole and 2-benzoxazole were compared and the spectral differences arise from a drastic change in the dynamics of C1C1′ torsional motion, as evidenced in the temperature-dependent studies properties of their derivatives and AM1 calculations.

TL;DR: The results demonstrated that cells at the G1/S border were more efficiently induced to differentiate by short exposure to RA than cells at other phases of the cell cycle, and suggested a possible mechanism of action of SP to enhance RA‐induced differentiation.

TL;DR: The chemico-physical properties of the virus together with the result of cross neutralization test indicated that it is a birnavirus and is closely related to Ab serotype of infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV).
Abstract: A birnavirus was isolated from cultured loach (Misgurnus anguillicaudatus) in Taiwan with TO-2 cell line. Evident cytopathic effects of the virus, including karyopycnosis, cytoplasmic inclusion bodies and cell destruction, were observed in TO-2 cells by light microscopy. The naked icosahedral virion layered by a single capsid with a diameter of 69 ± 4 nm was observed by electron microscopy. Sometimes, complete virions were found to be enclosed by lysosomes to form cytolysome. The virus propagated in several fish cell lines and its replication cycle was completed in 24 hours at its optimum multiplication temperature of 25°C. This virus has a two segmented double-stranded RNA genome and 3 structural proteins, showing 1.33 g/cm3 buoyant density in CsCl. The chemico-physical properties of the virus together with the result of cross neutralization test indicated that it is a birnavirus and is closely related to Ab serotype of infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV).

TL;DR: The Cancer Metaphors Test (CMT) was administered to a sample of 138 Taiwanese college students and 167 United States college students, equated on age and gender, and presumed not to be different on academic achievement and socioeconomic level as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: The Cancer Metaphors Test, a measure of the imagery of cancer, was administered to a sample of 138 Taiwanese college students and 167 United States college students, equated on age and gender, and presumed not to be different on academic achievement and socioeconomic level. A factor analysis of the Taiwanese protocols replicated the factor structure previously found on the CMT for United States respondents. Significant differences were obtained on two of the four CMT factors, with Taiwanese students scoring higher on both Terminal Pessimism and Future Optimism. Such differences are discussed in terms of differential coping strategies.

TL;DR: In this paper, phase transfer catalysts (PTCs) were used to accelerate the synthesis of M(PR3)2Cl2 in the presence of free PR3.
Abstract: The synthesis of M(PR3)2Cl2 (M = Pd and Pt, R = alkyl or aryl) front K2MCl4 (in H2O) and PR3 (in CH2Cl2) was promoted by the addition of phase-transfer catalysts (PTC). The greater the amount of PTC used, the more quickly the reaction completed. 31P NMR spectra of some M(PR3)2Cl2 in the presence of free PR3 were measured; these NMR resulls were used to explain problems encountered during the preparations.

TL;DR: A fiber full-polarization-state controller made by applying variable axial strains to both ends of a section of properly central-twisted high linearly birefringent fiber is proposed and thoroughly studied.
Abstract: A fiber full-polarization-state controller made by applying variable axial strains to both ends of a section of properly central-twisted high linearly birefringent fiber is proposed and thoroughly studied. The equations for polarization control are extremely simple. Experimental results are in good agreement with theoretical predictions.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that the products of these genes in E. coli behave as of insecticidal compounds.
Abstract: To obtain transgenic crops by introducing insecticidal genes into plant genome, one arcelin gene (arc) and several insecticidal crystal protein genes (cry) were isolated from bean and Bacillus thuringiensis respectively. Both of the arc and cry genes were cloned and sequenced. These two kinds of genes have been cloned in E. coli bacteria and tested for their expression activities by immunoblot hybridization. We have demonstrated that the products of these genes in E. coli behave as of insecticidal compounds. These genes were also transferred into plants through Ti-mediated plant transformation. Some tentative transformants characterized in details for their biochemical and biological properties are on progress.

TL;DR: A novel approach to deal with sharing in graph reduction is developed and share nodes are introduced to explicitly handle sharing to have a garbage collection method that is on-the-fly, parallel, distributed, and incremental.
Abstract: We investigate the problem of parallel evaluation of functional programs. We have developed a novel approach to deal with sharing in graph reduction. Share nodes are introduced to explicitly handle sharing. By using share nodes, we have a garbage collection method that is on-the-fly (real time), parallel, distributed, and incremental. In our parallel graph reducer, copying can be done in parallel to make an exponential growth of program tree nodes. Since each node represents a simple operation, the growth of program trees is a natural distribution of computation work. Load balancing becomes very easy and can be done automatically. A simulator is implemented to simulate a tree structured parallel computer to run our graph reducer. Examples such as parallel matrix addition and multiplication are tested. >

TL;DR: In this article, phase transfer catalysts (PTC) promoted synthesis of sulfur- and phosphorus-ylide complexes of Pd(II), Pt(II) and Au(I).
Abstract: Phase-transfer catalysts (PTC) promoted synthesis of sulfur- and phosphorus-ylide complexes of Pd(II), Pt(II) and Au(I). Because in most cases, the presence of PTC enhances the rate of formation of ylide complexes, this method is advantageous over the conventional one under anhydrous conditions. Reactions of these ylide complexes are described. Basic hydrolysis of dppm (dppm = Ph2PCH2PPh2) in Pt-dppm complexes was also promoted by PTC and produces PPh2Me and PPh2O− (or PPh2OH) ligands. Other products from various Pt-dppm reactions are discussed.

TL;DR: In this article, it was shown that a rise in the income tax may stimulate the domestic price level, rather than depress it, in the context of an efficiency wage model, and that a tax increase can be regarded as an anti-inflation device because it reduces aggregate demand.
Abstract: The conventional belief suggests that a tax increase can be regarded as an anti-inflation device because it reduces the aggregate demand. This paper makes a new attempt to reexamine the belief by introducing the principal tenets of the efficiency wage hypothesis. It is found that, in the context of an efficiency wage model, a rise in the income tax may stimulate the domestic price level, rather than depress it.
