TL;DR: The proportion of women in Vietnam using modern contraceptive methods has remained relatively high in recent years with significant variation across Vietnam's 63 provinces, where women of lower SES are more likely to use modern contraceptives, especially in the poorer provinces.
Abstract: Background : The prevalence of modern contraceptive use is an important indicator that reflects accessibility to reproductive health services. Satisfying unmet needs for family planning alone could reduce the number of maternal deaths by almost a third. This study uses multiple data sources to examine multilevel factors associated with the use of modern contraceptives among married women in Vietnam aged 15–49 years. Design : Data from different national surveys (Vietnam Population and Housing Census, Vietnam Living Standard Survey, and Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey) were linked to create a dataset including individual and contextual (provincial) variables ( N= 8,341). Multilevel modeling was undertaken to examine the impact of both individual and provincial characteristics on modern contraceptive use. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) are reported. Results : Individual factors significantly associated with the use of modern contraceptives were age 30–34 years (reference 15–19 years) (OR=1.63); high socioeconomic status (SES) (OR=0.8); having two living children (OR=2.4); and having a son (OR=1.4). The provincial poverty rate mediated the association between the individual’s SES and the likelihood of using modern contraceptives. Conclusions : The proportion of women in Vietnam using modern contraceptive methods has remained relatively high in recent years with significant variation across Vietnam’s 63 provinces. Women of lower SES are more likely to use modern contraceptive methods, especially in the poorer provinces. Achieving access to universal reproductive health is one of the Millennium Development Goals. Vietnam must continue to make progress in this area. TL;DR: The perceived freshness of pork, along with trust in the seller and in the pork production process, were strong indicators of consumer preference, and yet, pork value chain actors tend to trust their own individual food safety practices more, rather than the practices of other actors along the chain.

TL;DR: Higher communication divergence between partners was associated with a decreased likelihood of consistent condom use, and sex workers urgently need interventions that build their communication skills and address their risk behavior in non-commercial relationships.
Abstract: Research indicates female sex workers use condoms more consistently with their clients than with regular, non-commercial partners (partners). The purpose of this study was to better understand the relationship between couple communication and HIV risk behavior by examining (1) sex worker-partner divergence on communication measures and (2) the association between intra-couple communication divergence and consistent condom use. In this cross-sectional study, 50 sex workers and their partners in Hai Phong, Viet Nam were separately asked about their relationships and condom use. When asked about HIV risk communication in their relationship, sex workers reported significantly higher HIV communication content than their partners (p < 0.001). Higher communication divergence between partners was associated with a decreased likelihood of consistent condom use (OR 0.54 95% CI 0.30, 0.97). Sex workers urgently need interventions that build their communication skills and address their risk behavior in non-commercial relationships.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated factors related to bus-related crashes in Hanoi, Vietnam using focus group discussions and in-depth interviews among 75 participants who are bus drivers, motorcycle users, bus passengers, bus company managers, traffic policemen and local authorities.
Abstract: Road traffic crashes accounted for almost 13% of the total mortality recorded at the public health facilities in Vietnam in 2010. This qualitative study investigated factors related to bus-related crashes in Hanoi, Vietnam using focus group discussions and in-depth interviews among 75 participants who are bus drivers, motorcycle users, bus passengers, bus company managers, traffic policemen and local authorities. The results suggested that bus drivers were not the sole contributor to road traffic crashes with other vehicles. The rapid population growth due to rural to urban migration and the poor transport system appeared to be important contributing factors. In addition, "village culture" was likely to influence both the traffic behaviors of road users and the practices of law enforcement officers. Moreover, drink-driving behaviors appeared to be an important contributor to bus-related crashes. Supervision and penalty policies of bus companies also appeared to influence the driving performance of bus drivers. For a long-term solution to reduce bus-related crashes, it is vital to improve the transport infrastructure and the state management capacity regarding road safety as well as to assist the positive transition of citizens migrating from rural areas to their new urban lifestyle.
