TL;DR: The incidence of Campylobacter jejuni/coli was examined in five flocks of broilers monitored from hatch to slaughter, in feed and water and in litter samples, and several serotypes were identified, some of them were not found again on further examinations of the same flocks during the growing period.
Abstract: Summary The incidence of Campylobacter jejuni/coli was examined in five flocks of broilers monitored from hatch to slaughter, in feed and water and in litter samples. A total of 1440 samples from 720 broilers was examined. Campylobacter spp. were not isolated from broiler chicks at 1 day of age and were only isolated from one broiler chick in one flock at 1 week of age. In three flocks Campylobacter spp. were isolated from all chicks sampled at 4 weeks of age. In the fourth flock all chicks sampled were negative until 8 weeks of age when all were positive. The fifth flock remained negative throughout the 8 weeks of its life. Campylobacter spp. were not found in 20 samples of food and water. Of 20 litter samples they were found in only two. Eleven broiler flocks were examined only at slaughter. Twenty‐four caecal samples were examined from each flock. In three flocks no Campylobacter spp. were isolated, in one flock one broiler chick was positive and in seven flocks from 58% to 100% of sampled broilers wer...

TL;DR: Monitoring of ChE levels in field workers and residents exposed to spray drift and the assessment of health effects are recommended to determine whether or not ChE monitoring is needed on a routine basis, or should be replaced by alkylphosphate monitoring.

TL;DR: Of four strains of Mycoplasma pneumoniae, highly resistant to erythromycin and related antibiotics, three were homogeneously resistant, but the fourth showed heterogeneous resistance, with only 1% of the cells manifesting this property.
Abstract: Of four strains of Mycoplasma pneumoniae, highly resistant to erythromycin and related antibiotics, three were homogeneously resistant, but the fourth showed heterogeneous resistance, with only 1% of the cells manifesting this property. Stable, homogeneous resistance was generated in this strain in the presence of erythromycin, whereas the heterogeneous resistance was lost spontaneously on passage in the absence of antibiotics, or on treatment with acridine orange. The mechanism of induction of stable resistance appears to be different from that seen in Staphylococcus aureus.

TL;DR: The maximum likelihood estimate of recombination was determined to be zero and the combined maximum lod score based on pooled results from the Israeli‐Arab and Druze kindreds is 5.49 at θ = 0.03.
Abstract: Wilson disease (WD) is an inherited disorder of copper metabolism that affects the brain, liver, and other organs. Our group recently reported close linkage between the locus for WD and a polymorphic red cell enzyme, esterase D (EsD), in a large inbred Israeli-Arab lineage. We have subsequently studied two unrelated Druze kindreds in order to confirm this linkage and more precisely define the distance between the two loci. The maximum likelihood estimate of recombination was determined to be zero with lod scores of 1.48 and 1.06 in each Druze family, respectively. The combined maximum lod score based on pooled results from the Israeli-Arab and Druze kindreds is 5.49 at θ = 0.03. WD is one of a few autosomal recessive disorders that has been mapped by classical family study methods. In this paper, the merits for using large, inbred families in linkage studies of rare recessive disorders are discussed. Major considerations for pedigree selection are size and number of constituent nuclear families, number and distribution of affected individuals, and pedigree structure that may provide information for determination of phase between the disease and marker loci.

TL;DR: Analysis of the results indicated that symptoms of enteric morbidity among swimmers, particularly in the 0–4 year old age group, were related to “high” density levels of enterococci, E. coli and staphylococci.

TL;DR: The authors compare the rates of treated mental illness among ethnically advantaged Ashkenazic Jews and ethnically disadvantaged Sephardic Jews in four areas of Jerusalem defined by socioeconomic status and interpret these findings on the basis of social causation and social selection, including genetic transmission.
Abstract: The authors compared the rates of treated mental illness among ethnically advantaged Ashkenazic Jews and ethnically disadvantaged Sephardic Jews in four areas of Jerusalem defined by socioeconomic status. They found that the rates of illness were higher in areas of lower socioeconomic status, that the Ashkenazim had higher rates of illness than the Sephardim in the areas of lower status, and that there was a comparatively high rate of illness among the Ashkenazim in the very religious Jewish neighborhoods. They interpret these findings on the basis of the theories of social causation and social selection, including genetic transmission.

TL;DR: A survey of culicine mosquito larvae in northern Israel from 1974 to 1983 revealed the occurrence of 16 species, with culex pipiens, Culex univittatus, and Culiseta longiareolata being the 3 most common species.
Abstract: A survey of culicine mosquito larvae in northern Israel from 1974 to 1983 revealed the occurrence of 16 species. Geographical distribution, seasonality, habitat preferences, and frequency of interspecific associations were studied. Culex pipiens, Culex univittatus , and Culiseta longiareolata , which breed polluted habitats, were the 3 most common species. The occurrence of Culex martinii is also reported. This study complements a similar survey of anopheline larvae in northern Israel.

Abstract: Among autopsied drivers and pedestrians, blood alcohol levels greater than 50 mg/dl were found to be associated with male gender, one-car accidents and nighttime. Driving and walking while intoxicated (DWI and WWI) have emerged as public health problems in Israel.

TL;DR: Findings indicate the urgent need for active follow-up of Israeli ex-asbestos workers and a proposed screening and surveillance program for this high-risk group is discussed with emphasis on follow- up, health education, and smoking cessation.
Abstract: A pilot screening program for the evaluation of former asbestos-cement workers was carried out in the Chest Disease Clinic of the Acco Public Health Office (Ministry of Health), Israel. A total of 184 subjects were evaluated using medical and occupational questionnaires, clinical examinations, and pulmonary function tests (forced expiratory volume, forced vital capacity). Thirty percent of individuals with more than 1 year of work experience had symptoms of breathlessness or cough. Individuals with 10 years or more of work experience showed a high prevalence of râles and reduced pulmonary function, as compared to those with shorter work histories. These findings indicate the urgent need for active follow-up of Israeli ex-asbestos workers. A proposed screening and surveillance program for this high-risk group is discussed with emphasis on follow-up, health education, and smoking cessation.

TL;DR: The data on age-associated increases in ZPP in children suggest the possibility of an effect on red blood cell porphyrin metabolism, in some cases from cumulative low level lead exposures, and in others from iron deficiency, especially in poorer socio-economic groups.
