TL;DR: Cycloheximide (CHI) enhanced the peroxidase activity, both in dark-grown and FR-irradiated seedlings, however, the kinetics of enhancement of peroxIDase activity by continuous FR light and CHI is different.

TL;DR: A brief irradiation of red light was as effective as continuous white light and benzyladenine in arresting the senescence of detached barley leaves and red-far-red antagonistic effect suggests the involvement of phytochrome.

TL;DR: The red shift coincides in time with the rapid loss in the rates of photoreduction of dichlorophenol indophenol (DCPIP) with diphenylcarbazide (DPC) as electron donor and this indicates that dark senescence brings about some structural alterations of chloroplasts which affect their function.

TL;DR: It is shown that both the immediate and post-irradiation oxygen effects in barley seeds decrease in magnitude in the presence of potassium permanganate and caffeine, implying that these two types of oxygen effect have features in common.
Abstract: SummaryWe show that both the immediate and post-irradiation oxygen effects in barley seeds decrease in magnitude in the presence of potassium permanganate and caffeine. This implies that these two types of oxygen effect have features in common. With the removal of the radiation-induced oxygen-sensitive sites, by anoxic hydration, caffeine potentiates the oxygen-independent component of damage, in seeds irradiated in a dry or pre-soaked state. Potassium permanganate, on the other hand, enhances the anoxic radiation damage only in seeds irradiated in a dry state. The possible mode of action of KMnO4 and caffeine in barley seeds is discussed.

TL;DR: This paper attempts to analyse the effect of gamma radiation and the presence of histones in the form of nucleohistones (DNH) on the modes of ligand (Proflavine, Pf) binding to DNH.
Abstract: The effect of gamma-rays on the binding of proflavine and acridine orange to DNA was investigated by spectrophotometry. The effect of irradiation was observed on the buffered solutions of the free dye and free DNA. A dose of about 35 krad caused a hyperchromicity of 30-40 per cent to the DNA peak at 258 nm, while the same dose introduced a hypochromic effect to the monomer peaks of the dyes by 30 per cent. This implied that gamma-rays have an effect of decreasing the monomer concentration of free-day molecules in solution. From the results, we conclude that more dye is bound to the changed conformation of dye-bound DNA on irradiation. Scratchard-binding isotherms drawn for the unirradiated and irradiated complexes of Pf-DNA showed interesting differences. Similar isotherms could not be obtained for the acridine orange-DNA system.

TL;DR: Two specific rate transforms for an autocatalytic growth process G ( x ) =−tan( α log x ) and G( x )=−tanh(α log X ) have been proposed in this article.
Abstract: Two specific rate transforms for an autocatalytic growth process G ( x )=−tan( α log x ) and G ( x )=−tanh( α log x ) have been proposed. Both deterministic and stochastic solutions are given. The characteristic behavior of the growth, which periodically increases and declines, has been described by considering only one half period. Exact analytic solution of the equivalent Schrodinger equation for the Fokker-Planck equation of the problem has been obtained and expression for the probability distribution function is deduced. Finally, a possible biological application of the model has been given.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors identified eight types of agrarian organizations in rural Kerala and found that there exists three types of objective linkages (common leadership and clientele, sponsorship and formal relations) and two types of subjective linkages between them.
Abstract: Summary While the eight types of agrarian organizations we identified in rural Kerala have a measure of independence, there exists three types of objective linkages (common leadership and clientele, sponsorship and formal relations) and two types of subjective linkages (opposition and co-operation) between them. In evolving a strategy of building agrarian organizations in Indian rural society characterised by deep-rooted traditional bonds and extreme inequalities, it seems to be necessary to transform the prevalent primordial collectivism into instrumental collectivism. It is also necessary to forge a meaningful linkage between economic organizations (e.g. co-operatives) and political organizations (e.g. labour unions). A fusion of the instrumental collectivism of co-operatives and the ideological collectivism of unions is a pre-requisite so that the economic gains secured by the rural poor through political struggles can be consolidated through co-operatives by promoting habits of thrift, savings etc. Such a structural linkage may help in solving several problems such as inadequate internal financial resources, scarcity of altruistic leadership, widespread corruption etc., faced by these organizations at present.
