TL;DR: A survey was made of the work and hobbies of patients with the carpal tunnel syndrome and it was suggested that this type of manual activity can be a causal factor in the development of the, so-called, 'spontaneous' carpal Tunnel syndrome.
Abstract: A survey was made of the work and hobbies of 658 patients with the carpal tunnel syndrome. Seventy-nine per cent of the patients were employed in work requiring light, highly repetitive movements of the wrists and fingers. Fifty-one per cent of the unemployed housewives knitted. It is suggested that this type of manual activity can be a causal factor in the development of the, so-called, 'spontaneous' carpal tunnel syndrome.

TL;DR: Although no statistically significant differences emerged, with regard to both therapeutic effect and some side-effects a trend in favour of Org GB 94 was apparent.
Abstract: A double-blind controlled comparative clinical trial of Org GB 94 and imipramine was conducted in general practice. Fifty-five patients were treated with Org GB 94 (60 mg daily) and fifty-four with imipramine (150 mg daily). In the doses employed both agents were equally effective in relieving depression over a four week treatment period. Tolerance of the two agents was similar. Although no statistically significant differences emerged, with regard to both therapeutic effect and some side-effects a trend in favour of Org GB 94 was apparent.

TL;DR: In this article, a magnetic switch assembly including a reed switch is biased by moving the magnetic axis of a permanent magnet with respect to the axis of the Reed switch, and a screw-threaded member received in a bore in the magnet is rotated to move the magnet towards and away from the reed switches to vary the magnetic biasing conditions.
Abstract: A magnetic switch assembly including a reed switch is biased by moving the magnetic axis of a permanent magnet with respect to the axis of the reed switch. In one embodiment, the magnet is a disc magnet which is provided with diametrically opposite poles the magnetic axis of the magnet being rotated in a plane spaced from the reed switch. In a further embodiment the magnet is a bar magnet disposed with its magnetic axis parallel to and aligned with the axis of the reed switch. A screw-threaded member received in a bore in the magnet is rotated to move the magnet towards and away from the reed switch to vary the magnetic biasing conditions, guide means are disclosed abutting the magnet so as to maintain the disposition of the magnet with respect to the reed switch during movement of the magnet.

TL;DR: The number of side-effects was less in the mazindol group and mainly of an adrenergic, peripheral type, while those in the diethylpropion group are mainly of the central stimulant type.
Abstract: Fifty obese patients were entered into a \2-week parallel group study of mazindol with diethylpropion in a general practice group. Both drugs produced weight loss, hut patients on mazindol lost ]9·9 lbs In 12 weeks, while those on diethylpropion lost 11-6 lbs, a statistically significant difference (p < 001). At each visit during the trial, patients had lost more weight wilh mazindol, but this was only significant statistically in the period 8-12 weeks (p < 0 01). Patients developed tolerance lo the effect of diethylpropio n in the last period (8-12 weeks) but this was not evident in those patients taking mazindol. The number of side-effects was less in the mazindol group and mainly of an adrenergic, peripheral type, while those in the diethylpropion group are mainly of the ceiural sti/nulant type.

TL;DR: In this trial in depressive reaction in general practice, maprotiline and amitriptyline in a fixed dosage regime of 50 mg three times daily for three weeks, were equally effective therapeutic agents; all but two of the patients improving during the trial.
Abstract: In this trial in depressive reaction in general practice, maprotiline and amitriptyline, in a fixed dosage regime of 50 mg three times daily for three weeks, were equally effective therapeutic agents; all but two of the patients improving during the trial.Thirteen patients (16% of the group) withdrew from the study due to the severity of side-effects, predominantly because of drowsiness. In those patients who completed the trial both compounds were relatively well tolerated. The general pattern of side-effects ('mild’ drowsiness and dry mouth) was similar for both treatments, although maprotiline appeared to cause more dizziness than amitriptyline.

TL;DR: The results showed that although direct pharmacological effect was paramount in determining therapeutic outcome, detailed differences were related to various placebo factors.
Abstract: The degree to which placebo response is involved in an active treatment situation in normal clinical practice, and the factors comprising the placebo response, have been analyzed in a study on patients with anxiety/depressive syndromes. Four tablet preparations of different appearance but identical pharmacological activity were used over a three week period, and a comparison of therapeutic benefits between ‘treatments', doctors, and doctor—patient groupings was made, in addition to an analysis of the relationship of patients' self-assessments with their physicians' ratings. The results showed that although direct pharmacological effect was paramount in determining therapeutic outcome, detailed differences were related to various placebo factors. The similarity between physicians' and patients' ratings tends to decrease during the course of treatment, and possible reasons for this are reviewed in the light of previous work.

TL;DR: General practice patients with mild to moderate congestive cardiac failure recorded their frequency of micturition after taking frusemide 40 mg or bumetanide 1 mg at 8 a.m. or bumetonide 1mg at 6 p.m, to reduce major disruptions in the patient's daily routine.
Abstract: General practice patients with mild to moderate congestive cardiac failure recorded their frequency of micturition after taking frusemide 40 mg or bumetanide 1 mg at 8 a.m. or bumetanide 1 mg at 6 p.m. Morning doses of bumetanide or frusemide caused a similar pattern of urinary frequency, although the period of increased frequency appeared to be shorter with bumetanide. If an evening diuresis is required, bumetanide should be given between 4 and 6 p.m. The use of potent and short acting diuretics such as bumetanide allow the physician and patient scope to decide upon the most appropriate time for administration and so reduce major disruptions in the patient's daily routine.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a sensor for an electric motor with a saturatable magnetic core forming a pole face next to the rotor pole face, which is exposed to a pre-magnetising field of such a magnitude that when the rotor rotates about its axis the core is driven in and out of saturation.
Abstract: The control system for an electric motor has a sensor to control current supply to the stator. The sensor contains a saturatable magnetic core forming a pole face next to the rotor pole face. The magnetic core is exposed to a pre-magnetising field of such a magnitude that when the rotor rotates about its axis the core is driven in and out of saturation. The pre-magnetising or background field is produced by a permanent magnet or by an electromagnet. A coil wound around the core provides the output that determines the stator supply regulation.

TL;DR: After 2 weeks the opipramol/clomipramine regime was significantly more effective in the relief of anxiety whereas the clomipramsine higher dose regime brought about a significantly greater improvement in the symptom depressed mood.
Abstract: Sixty patients suffering from mixed anxiety depressive states were admitted to a comparative controlled clinical trial of a free combination of opipramol 50 mg and clomipramine 10 mg and clomipramine 25 mg. A double-dummy technique was used to ensure blindness and both regimes were administered three times daily. A stratified randomization technique was employed but this did not work effectively as far as severity was concerned producing some imbalance in the groups.Thirty-one patients received the combination therapy and 29 clomipramine alone. Twenty-eight patients on the combination regime and 24 on clomipramine alone completed the study.Amongst the completers the total score, on a 17 symptom rating scale, fell from 19·6 to 6·6 in the combination group and from 23·6 to 9·3 in the clomipramine alone group after 4 weeks treatment. Significantly more side-effects, especially dry mouth, were seen in the clomipramine alone group. After 2 weeks the opipramol/clomipramine regime was significantly more effectiv...

TL;DR: In this paper, the relative movement between the cutting blade and the anvil must be such that no contact occurs between the edge of the cutting edge and any part of anvil.
Abstract: In the razor for dry shaving a cutting blade, of similar size to a conventional wet razor blade, is presented directly to the face to be shaved at a preferred shaving angle. An anvil (which may be a second cutting blade) provides a continuous edge, and relative movement between the cutting blade and the anvil effects cutting as a result of impact between the cutting edge of the cutting blade and hairs on the face while the hairs are supported by the continuous edge of the anvil. The relative movement between the cutting blade and the anvil must be such that no contact occurs between the cutting edge of the cutting blade and any part of the anvil.
