TL;DR: Numerical results demonstrate MOSOS approach is a powerful search and optimization technique in finding optimization of work shift schedules that is it can assist project managers in selecting appropriate plan for project.
Abstract: This research presents a novel multiple optimization algorithm MOSOS.MOSOS is applied to solve time-cost-utilization work shift tradeoff problem. The model performance is demonstrated in the experimental results.Statistical test found MOSOS to provide better solutions compared to other methods. Multiple work shifts are commonly utilized in construction projects to meet project requirements. Nevertheless, evening and night shifts raise the risk of adverse events and thus must be used to the minimum extent feasible. Tradeoff optimization among project duration (time), project cost, and the utilization of evening and night work shifts while maintaining with all job logic and resource availability constraints is necessary to enhance overall construction project success. In this study, a novel approach called "Multiple Objective Symbiotic Organisms Search" (MOSOS) to solve multiple work shifts problem is introduced. The MOSOS algorithm is new meta-heuristic based multi-objective optimization techniques inspired by the symbiotic interaction strategies that organisms use to survive in the ecosystem. A numerical case study of construction projects were studied and the performance of MOSOS is evaluated in comparison with other widely used algorithms which includes non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II), the multiple objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO), the multiple objective differential evolution (MODE), and the multiple objective artificial bee colony (MOABC). The numerical results demonstrate MOSOS approach is a powerful search and optimization technique in finding optimization of work shift schedules that is it can assist project managers in selecting appropriate plan for project.

TL;DR: In this paper, the setting time of fly ash-based geopolymer concrete is investigated. And the experimental results showed that fly ash particle size, CaO and MgO content, in addition to ratio of sodium silicate and sodium hydroxide in the alkali solution, molarity of NaOH, initial temperature of the mixture, curing temperature, and mix volume could potentially influence the set time of the geopolymers mixture.
Abstract: Fly ash is a waste from coal burning, that are generated with fluctuation both in its physical and chemical characteristics. This characteristics of fly ash when used in the making of geopolymer concrete will greatly affect the final products obtained. The pH value measured in fly ash, according previous research, can influence the setting time of geopolymer and fly ash with high pH values can cause flash-setting in the concrete. Understanding more clearly about the factors that affect the setting time of fly ash based geopolymer is important for further progress and development of the material. It was found that factors that influence the setting time of geopolymer was not only from the physical and chemical properties of the fly ash itself. Other factors such as composition and mix design, manufacturing process and environmental conditions can also affect its setting time. The experimental results showed that fly ash particle size, CaO and MgO content, in addition to ratio of sodium silicate and sodium hydroxide in the alkali solution, molarity of NaOH, initial temperature of the mixture, curing temperature, and mix volume could potentially influence the setting time of the geopolymer mixture.

TL;DR: In this article, the effect of borax addition to the high calcium fly ash-based geopolymer mixture to reduce the occurrence of flash setting was investigated, and it was found that the setting time can be extended significantly, with the addition of 5% borsax, by mass, of fly ash.
Abstract: Geopolymer that was made with high CaO content fly ash was found to have higher compressive strength than the low CaO fly ash, using the same mixture composition. This effect could be due to the physico-chemical properties of the fly ash, in respect to its particle size or the chemical composition. Although it was not widely published, the occurrence of flash setting of geopolymer was known to occur when using high CaO content fly ash as the precursor. Geopolymer paste may solidify within minutes after the addition of alkali activators, making it very difficult to cast in big volume. This paper investigate the effect of borax addition to the high calcium fly ash-based geopolymer mixture to reduce the occurrence of flash setting. It was found that the setting time can be extended significantly, with the addition of 5% borax, by mass, of fly ash. The addition of borax also have positive effect on increasing the compressive strength of geopolymer.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the effect of HR attributions on turnover intentions, with job satisfaction playing a mediating role, with 454 respondents from various organizations within the Netherlands.
Abstract: Human Resources Management (HRM) is part of the organizational functions that contribute to the effectiveness of a firm’s performance, and brings an organization a competitive advantage through the implementation of its Human Resources (HR) practices. HR practices adopted by management are perceived or attributed subjectively by individual employees, and can in turn affect the employees’ attitudes and behavior (e.g. Job satisfaction and turnover intention). The purpose of this study is to contribute to the process-based approach by investigating the effect of HR attributions on turnover intentions, with job satisfaction playing a mediating role. The analysis is on the individual level, with 454 respondents from various organizations within the Netherlands. The results show that HR attributions can affect the turnover intention, through the presence of job satisfaction. Thus, it can be said that it is important to always consider the employees’ attitudes and behavior when examining their perception of HR practices, and in predicting their intention to leave.

TL;DR: In this paper, the compressive strength of fly ash-based geopolyme, manufactured using fly ash obtained from different power plants, was investigated and it was found that the size of the fly ash granules, the CaO and MgO content, and the carbon content in fly ash are the internal factors that may affect the compressed strength of geopolymer.
Abstract: . This study was conducted to determine the factors that may affect the compressive strength of fly ash-based geopolyme, manufactured using fly ash obtained from different power plants. Fly ash obtained from different sources may have very different characteristics that affect the properties of geopolymer product. The source of variations in the geopolymer properties from the view point of the source materials can be classified into internal and external factors. Internal factors include the physical and chemical properties of the fly ash, while external factors associated with mixture proportion of geopolymer and the manufacturing process. From the experimental results, it was found that the size of the fly ash granules, the CaO and MgO content, and the carbon content in fly ash are the internal factors that may affect the compressive strength of geopolymer. On the other hand, the ratio of sodium silicate to sodium hydroxide in the alkaline solution and the molarity of the sodium hydroxide solution are the external factors influencing the compressive strength of geopolymer.

TL;DR: In this paper, the effects of CO2 on biogas flammability limits and laminar burning velocities in spark ignited premixed combustion were investigated using a high-speed digital camera.
Abstract: Biogas is an alternative energy source that is sustainable and renewable containing more than 50% CH4 and its biggest impurity or inhibitor is CO2. Demands for replacing fossil fuels require an improved fundamental understanding of its combustion processes. Flammability limits and laminar burning velocities are important characteristics in these processes. Thus, this research focused on the effects of CO2 on biogas flammability limits and laminar burning velocities in spark ignited premixed combustion. Biogas was burned in a spark ignited spherical combustion bomb. Spherically expanding laminar premixed flames, freely propagating from spark ignition in initial, were continuously recorded by a high-speed digital camera. The combustion bomb was filled with biogas-air mixtures at various pressures, CO2 levels and equivalence ratios (ϕ) at ambient temperature. The results were also compared to those of the previous study into inhibitorless biogas (methane) at various pressures and equivalence ratios (ϕ). Either the flammable areas become narrower with increased percentages of carbon dioxide or the pressure become lower. In biogas with 50% CO2 content, there was no biogas flame propagation for any equivalence ratio at reduced pressure (0.5 atm). The results show that the laminar burning velocity at the same equivalence ratio declined in respect with the increased level of CO2. The laminar burning velocities were higher at the same equivalence ratio by reducing the initial pressure.

TL;DR: In this paper, a study in kampungs (urban village) in Surabaya, Indonesia, with specific respondents of young adults aged 20-25 years old, showed that elements related to the social construction within the place is the most crucial elements rather than elements with strong in legibility.
Abstract: The aim of this article is to extend Kevin Lynch’s theory in the ‘Image of the City’ (1960) by adding ‘meaning’ to the urban spaces observation because Lynch focused on the legibility factor only. The ‘meaning’ observation in this article is through the reading of space as ‘third space’ creation given by Lefebvre, Soja and Bhabha. The understanding of ‘third space’ (include the first-second spaces) gives a deeper understanding of the urban areas especially for urban areas that bear specific social condition of cultural hybridization. The understanding does not only read the physical layer, but also cultural and historical layers. This article is based on a study in kampungs (urban village) in Surabaya, Indonesia, with specific respondents of young adults aged 20-25 years old. This study shows that by adding ‘meaning’ to the urban elements identification of Lynch’s especially in the view of third space reading, the result shows that elements related to the social construction within the place is the most crucial elements rather than elements with strong in legibility.

Abstract: Spatial identity is a result of a connection between people, physical elements of places, and activities associated with them. The development of identity occurs through the psychological process place attachment. This article is based on a research project that observed the spatial identity of young adults living in kampungs (urban villages), in Surabaya city. The young adults are faced with the contrast of a two-sided modernity between the kampungs and the city, which affects their attachment. The study of place attachment has been undertaken through an observation of social life of the participants and spatial perception. Through this study of spatial identity not only physical characteristics were identified, but also social characteristics. This is due to physical conditions of space and social interactions in these spaces are intertwined. The study found that the identity with the strongest attachment is related to social behaviour of the young adults but which is not recognised by current planning strategies. This study of spatial identity is suggesting that policy changes are needed to improve spatial environment of the kampungs.

Abstract: Digital natives which always connect to the world through their gadgets have special needs for gathering information. Do libraries which in the past can be said as the sources of information can satisfy their needs? What should libraries do, so that they can answer those needs? Those queries are the prominent questions to be answered in this paper. In this paper we describe the digital natives’ characteristics when they use their PC and gadgets. The data were collected from 460 university students in Surabaya. We also measure the library service quality (LibQual) for five university libraries in Surabaya. Moreover, using K-means, we also clustered the respondents into two groups, i.e., the first group is the ones who attach to their gadgets, and the second group is the ones who do not attach to their gadgets. For the first group the library online information and for the second group, the operational service are the most important factors for measuring the LibQual.

Abstract: There are two important aspects that will play important roles in future manufacturing systems: changeability and human-machine collaboration The first aspect, changeability, concerns with the ability of production tools to reconfigure themselves to the new manufacturing settings, possibly with unknown prior information, while maintaining their reliability at lowest cost The second aspect, human-machine collaboration, emphasizes the ability of production tools to put themselves on the position as humans’ co-workers The interplay between these two aspects will not only determine the economical accomplishment of a manufacturing process, but it will also shape the future of the technology itself To address this future challenge of manufacturing systems, the concept of Cognitive Factory was proposed Along this line, machines and processes are equipped with cognitive capabilities in order to allow them to assess and increase their scope of operation autonomously However, the technical implementation of such a concept is still widely open for research, since there are several stumbling blocks that limit practicality of the proposed methods In this paper, we introduce our method to achieve the goal of the Cognitive Factory Our method is inspired by the working mechanisms of a human’s brain; it works by harnessing the reasoning capabilities of cognitive architecture By utilizing such an adaptive reasoning mechanism, we envision the future manufacturing systems with cognitive intelligence We provide illustrative examples from our current research work to demonstrate that our proposed method is notable to address the primary issues of the Cognitive Factory: changeability and human-machine collaboration

TL;DR: In this paper, the influence of N2 on the flame angle, flame height and dimensionless flame height was investigated in an external premixed combustion burner with a high speed camera and then processed through a computer system.
Abstract: Biogas contains more than 50% methane (CH4), is a renewable and eco-friendly fuel produced by bacterial action. Not only is biogas flammable but it also contains inhibitors like carbon dioxide and nitrogen, as well as small amounts of H2, O2, H2S and others. Several associated studies have been conducted in order to examine biogas combustion characteristics in external combustion and flame angle, flame height and dimensionless flame height are the important characteristics in external premixed combustion. This research’s aims were to discover the influences of N2 as it is the second most prevalent inhibitor in biogas by burning stoichiometric fuel mixtures (CH4 and N2 (0%-50% of fuel)) and oxygen in an experimental external premixed combustion burner whose nozzle tip diameter was 5 mm. The burner was connected to a hose from the oxygen tank and another hose from the fuel tank. Two regulators and flowmeters were placed on each tank to monitor the flow supplied to the mixer and burner. The valves were used to stop or open the fluid supply. The outcome flame propagation is then recorded by a high speed camera and then processed through a computer system. The results indicate that N2 influenced the flame angle, flame height and dimensionless flame height. The higher the N2 content inside the fuel, the shorter the flame height and the lower the dimensionless flame height. Moreover, increasing the N2 content created larger the flame angle.

Abstract: Parallel Discrete-Manipulators are a special kind of force regulated manipulators which can undergo continuous motions despite being commanded through a large but finite number of states only. Real-time control of such systems requires very fast and efficient methods for solving their inverse static analysis. In this paper, artificial intelligence techniques (AI) are investigated for addressing the inverse static analysis of a planar parallel array featuring ten three-state force actuators and two applications using 3D Massively Parallel Robots (MPRs) with one and two layers. In particular, the research method used simulation software and hardware testing with the case of parallel manipulator with two level discrete pneumatic actuators. Simulations with typical desired displacement inputs are presented and a good performance of the results compared to AI is obtained. The comparison showed that the parallel manipulator has the Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) has less than 10% and can be used for controlling the ternary states of discrete manipulators via AI.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors conducted a qualitative study on Madurese Batik motifs in four Indonesian towns of Pamekasan, Tanjung Bumi, Sumenep, and Sampang.
Abstract: This study has two chief purposes. Firstly, to introduce the Madurese Batik from Indonesia which has not yet been widely studied, and secondly, to show the acculturation of the Chinese culture in the motif of Madurese Batik. Research method employed in this study was descriptive qualitative, because our topic involves cultural and humanity sciences. The writers interview batik makers from the towns of Pamekasan, Tanjung Bumi, Sumenep, and Sampang, as research informants. We take two batik makers as representatives of each town. The four towns are selected because those towns are the centers of batik in Madura. To crosscheck the information obtained from the batik makers, also interview two collectors of Madurese batik who have good knowledge of Madurese batik. The data from the interviews and the photographic documentation of Madurese batiks are sorted and then analyzed by relating them to the theories about Madurese culture, acculturation process, and Chinese culture. The discussions and conclusions of the analyses correspond with the hypotheses proposed at the beginning of the study, which states that there are acculturations of the symbols on Madurese Batik motifs, which can be seen in the paintings of phoenix, butterfly, fish, bamboo trees on the batik, and that the acculturation process occurs naturally without conscious knowledge of the Madurese.
