TL;DR: In this paper, the variability of the Hg ii 3984 line in the primary of the binary star was discovered through the examination of high-dispersion spectra with signal-to-noise ratios greater than 500.
Abstract: The variability of the Hg ii 3984 line in the primary of the binary starAnd was discovered through the examination of high-dispersion spectra with signal-to-noise ratios greater than 500. This first definitively identified spectrum variation in any mercury-manganese star is not due to the orbital motion of the compan- ion. Rather, the variation is produced by the combination of the 2.38236 day period of rotation of the pri- mary that we determined and a nonuniform surface distribution of mercury that is concentrated in its equatorial region. If the surface mercury distribution exhibits long-term stability, then it is likely that a weak magnetic field operates in its atmosphere, but if changes are observed in the line profile over a period of a few years, then these would constitute direct evidence for diffusion. TL;DR: In this paper, the concurrent validity of the Slosson Full-Range Intelligence Test (S-FRIT) and the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Third Edition (WISC-III) was examined by comparing data from 123 elementary students' screening and psychological testing results.
Abstract: This study examined the concurrent validity of the Slosson Full-Range Intelligence Test (S-FRIT) by comparing S-FRIT scores to the scores of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children–Third Edition (WISC-III) and the Woodcock-Johnson Tests of Achievement–Revised (WJ-R). Data from 123 elementary students' screening and psychological testing results were examined. Results revealed that the S-FRIT scores were more related to overall intelligence, verbal, and math abilities than nonverbal intelligence, reading, or written language abilities. Further, it was found that 89% of the participants' S-FRIT Full-Range IQ scores fell within one standard deviation of their WISC-III FSIQ scores, with an average discrepancy of 7.6 points. Discrepancies between S-FRIT and WISC-III scores were also examined by educational diagnostic categories and ability levels. Limitations and suggestions for future research are provided. © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

TL;DR: In the post-9/11 era, changes in federal law, court interpretation of privacy safeguards, and technological advances have expanded the circumstances and methods by which the police may engage in surveillance of civil activities.
Abstract: In recent years U.S. police have been given greater surveillance powers in response to perceived threats from crime, drugs, and terrorism. Several legal and criminal events have facilitated a reevaluation of the balance between police surveillance authority and civil privacy protection. In the post-9/11 era, changes in federal law, court interpretation of privacy safeguards, and technological advances have expanded the circumstances and methods by which the police may engage in surveillance of civil activities. This paper examines the factors contributing to the escalation in police surveillance and its effects on privacy rights and civil life. The analysis suggests that increasing police surveillance has diminished individual privacy protections and impacted aspects of civil life.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors matched optical region spectrophotometry and H profiles with the predictions of ATLAS9 solar composition model atmospheres for 48 main sequence band B and A stars, and found that these stars are suciently hot that their eective temperatures and surface gravity determinations are unaected by discrepancies due to the choice of MixingLength or Canuto-Mazzitelli convection theories.
Abstract: Eective temperatures and surface gravities for 48 main sequence band B and A stars were found by matching optical region spectrophotometry and H profiles with the predictions of ATLAS9 solar composition model atmospheres. When these values were compared with those found using Stromgren uvby photometry based on ATLAS6 model atmospheres, we found a dierence (photometry-spectrophotometry) of 25118 K for 29 stars with 8000 K Te 10 050 K compared to 76 105 K for 14 stars with 10 050 K Te 17 000 K. The surface gravity scales are in agreement. These stars are suciently hot that their eective temperatures and surface gravity determinations are unaected by discrepancies due to the choice of Mixing-Length or Canuto-Mazzitelli convection theories.

TL;DR: In this article, an HR diagram indicating the positions of the HgMn and the Am stars analyzed by the senior author and his collaborators shows that the coolest Hgmn stars and the hottest Am stars are found on the same stellar evolutionary tracks and hence the former must evolve into the later.
Abstract: An HR diagram indicating the positions of the HgMn and the Am stars analyzed by the senior author and his collaborators shows that the coolest HgMn stars and the hottest Am stars are found on the same stellar evolutionary tracks and hence the former must evolve into the later. The explanation of the dividing line between these two types of nonmagnetic chemically peculiar stars where the Hg abundances suddenly change their degree of overabundance is a major test of the theories which try to explain the anomalous abundances of such stars. Some other important relationships are found which can also serve as tests of theories which purport to explain the properties of these stars.

TL;DR: In this paper, the dierential Stromgren uvby observations from the Four College Automated Photoelectric Telescope (FCAPT) are presented for the CP stars HR 149 and HR 7911 and the mCP stars HD 32966 and HD 171782.
Abstract: Dierential Stromgren uvby observations from the Four College Automated Photoelectric Telescope (FCAPT) are presented for the CP stars HR 149 and HR 7911 and the mCP stars HD 32966 and HD 171782. The Mercury-Manganese star HR 149 is found to be constant while HR 7911 with a period of 5.9617 days probably has a component which is a magnetic CP star. Improved periods were derived for HD 32966 and HD 171782 of 3.0927 and 4.4674 days, respectively. The former is a rather large amplitude mCP star. Both have at least one light curve dierent in shape from the others observed.

TL;DR: The necessary conditions for the existence of a c-Bhaskar Rao design with block size 4 are given in this article, where it is shown that these conditions are sufficient for most pairs of c and λ.
Abstract: Several new families of c-Bhaskar Rao designs with block size 4 are constructed. The necessary conditions for the existence of a c-BRD (υ,4,λ) are that: (1)λmin=−λ/3 ≤ c ≤ λ and (2a) c≡λ (mod 2), if υ > 4 or (2b) c≡ λ (mod 4), if υ = 4 or (2c) c≠ λ − 2, if υ = 5. It is proved that these conditions are necessary, and are sufficient for most pairs of c and λ; in particular, they are sufficient whenever λ−c ≠ 2 for c > 0 and whenever c − λmin≠ 2 for c 101; for the classic Bhaskar Rao designs, i.e., c = 0, we show the necessary conditions are sufficient with the possible exception of 0-BRD (υ,4,2)'s for υ≡ 4 (mod 6). © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. TL;DR: In this paper, the abundances of the superfically normal stars γ Ser (F6 V) and 101 Herculis (A7 V) consistent with previous studies of this series using photographic region spectrograms obtained with Reticon and CCD detectors were derived.
Abstract: Elemental abundances analyses of the superfically normal stars γ Ser (F6 V) and 101 Herculis (A7 V) consistent with previous studies of this series using photographic region spectrograms obtained with Reticon and CCD detectors produced derived values that are generally solar except for Al which is very underabundant and the rare earths which do not have the solar pattern Similar discrepancies from solar values are seen in other superficially normal stars of this series with similar temperatures Our results for γ Ser are in acceptable agreement with other recent studies based on different techniques and spectral regions

TL;DR: This paper describes how the teaching of effective listening skills can be incorporated into a variety of IS courses and offers some exercises and techniques.
Abstract: Information systems (IS) professionals have consistently expressed the need for good communication skills in IS graduates and universities have responded by providing communication components within their curriculum and coursework. However, the typical understanding and execution of communication skills revolve around teaching presentation skills. While presentation skills are important components of communication, the communication skill of effective listening is of equal importance for information technology professionals. In fact, this skill is essential in the information requirements stage of systems development when the end-user is required to work with the IS professional in deriving the basics of the new system to be developed. This paper describes how the teaching of effective listening skills can be incorporated into a variety of IS courses and offers some exercises and techniques.

TL;DR: In this paper, the GAMA and KAIT measures were compared and the results showed that GAMA IQ scores were significantly and moderately correlated with KKF Fluid, Crystallized and Composite IQs, supporting the convergent validity of this instrument.
Abstract: Ninety-four college students were administered the GAMA and KAIT. GAMA IQs were significantly and moderately correlated with KAIT Fluid, Crystallized and Composite IQs, supporting the convergent validity of this instrument. Although significant correlations between measures emerged and nonsignificant differences were found between mean scores across these instruments, GAMA IQ scores did not accurately predict KAIT Composite IQ scores when GAMA IQ scores were compared to KAIT Composite IQs. Similarly, when the sample was divided into two groups by ability level, GAMA IQs accurately estimated the intelligence for individuals of Average and Below Average intelligence, but underestimated the KAIT Composite IQ scores by 4 points for the Above Average group. Implications of the findings are discussed and suggestions for future research are provided. © 2002, Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

TL;DR: Pearson product-moment correlations indicated that the Stroop Word task was positively associated with scores on the WRAT–3 Spelling task, the Woodcock-Johnson Basic and Broad Reading tasks, and the Nelson-Denny Reading Rate and Comprehension tasks.
Abstract: The present investigation examined the relationships for scores on the Stroop Color and Word Test with measures of reading and language achievement within an adult population. The Stroop Color and Word Test, Nelson-Denny Reading Test, Woodcock-Johnson Psycho-Educational Battery-Revised, and Wide Range Achievement Test-3 were administered to 99 men ranging in age from 18 to 27 years. Pearson product-moment correlations indicated that the Stroop Word task was positively associated with scores on the WRAT-3 Spelling task, the Woodcock-Johnson Basic and Broad Reading tasks, and the Nelson-Denny Rcading Rate and Comprehension tasks. These and other significant relationships were discussed in terms of possible implications regarding the assessment of reading achievement.

TL;DR: In this article, a batch oriented maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimation scheme was proposed for tracking a moving target using acoustic bearing-only data from sensors with unknown positions, and the Cramer-Rao bound on the estimate was derived.
Abstract: This study investigates the application of a batch oriented maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimation scheme to the problem of tracking a moving target using acoustic bearing-only data from sensors with unknown positions. In this paper a simple method for determining sensor location and movement from the measured acoustic data is proposed, and is subsequently utilized to update the sensor positions to reduce tracking errors. The Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) on the estimate is derived, and simulations show that the proposed method compares favorably to the bound.

TL;DR: Correlational analyses showed that scores indicating lower general anxiety and lower anxiety specific to interacting with persons with disabilities were significantly correlated with attitudes toward people with disabilities.
Abstract: This study measured the anxiety, attitudes toward people with disabilities, and sex roles of a sample of undergraduate men attending a military college in the southeast (n=58). Students who had voluntarily participated in the college's "Buddy Program," in which the students interact on a weekly basis with people with mental, physical, and emotional disabilities, were compared with peers who had had limited or no such contact. Data analysis showed no significant differences in androgyny and attitudes toward people with disabilities between the two groups. However, there was a significant difference in anxiety when interacting with persons with disabilities. Correlational analyses showed that scores indicating lower general anxiety and lower anxiety specific to interacting with persons with disabilities were significantly correlated with attitudes toward persons with disabilities. Implications for recruiting and training male volunteers to work with persons who have disabilities are discussed.

TL;DR: This study demonstrates the improvement in passive acoustic target tracking accuracy that can be achieved from the addition of transient signal time difference of arrival information to the set of target measurements.
Abstract: This study demonstrates the improvement in passive acoustic target tracking accuracy that can be achieved from the addition of transient signal time difference of arrival information to the set of target measurements. A scheme for automatic transient detection and TDOA estimation that takes advantage of prior target position information is proposed. The benefits of the process are highlighted, and two simulations demonstrating the viability of the method are provided.

TL;DR: Rheubottom et al. as discussed by the authors show how one form of kinship (agnatic relations) inouenced political careers over time while another form (the casata) did not provide the same opportunities for political advancement.
Abstract: with Rheubottom’s critique, since he borrows from historians (especially Stone) to highlight the importance of studying oface holders and their careers rather than the ofaces themselves.2 Some readers may be put off by the dense prose and specialized terminology. It would be unfortunate if readers tired before reaching the book’s conclusion, in which the author highlights the importance of collaboration between anthropology and history. His dynamic study of generational cohorts shows how one form of kinship (agnatic relations) inouenced political careers over time while another form of kinship (the casata) did not provide the same opportunities for political advancement. Rheubottom thereby provides a richly detailed example of historical processes that move beyond the ethnographic present.
