TL;DR: Analysis showed that for each species of Dacus the difference between ecosystems was highly significant, and the highest numbers of males of D. caudatus trapped were from a village, on a vegetable farm for D. cucurbitae , and D. occipitalis was only caught in a forest.
Abstract: Dacus dorsalis Hend. infested eleven, D. cucurbitae Coq. five and D. umbrosus F. two of the eighteen common fruits and vegetables grown in Penang, West Malaysia. D. tau (Wlk.) infested bacang (Mangifera foetida), D. caudatus F. chilli (Capsicum annuum) and D. frauenfeldi Schin. water guava (Eugenia javanica), together with D. dorsalis. Pomelo (Citrus grandis) was found infested for the first time by D. cucurbitae. No flies were trapped using Capilure and trimedlure as baits. Cue-lure attracted D. caudatus, D. cucurbitae, D. frauenfeldi, D. occipitalis (Bez.) and D. tau. Methyl eugenol attracted D. dorsalis and D. umbrosus. Dorsalure was less attractive to D. caudatus and D. dorsalis than cue-lure and methyl eugenol, respectively, but it was equally attractive to D. frauenfeldi as cue-lure. Using traps baited with cue-lure or methyl eugenol in five ecosystems, the highest numbers of males of D. dorsalis, D. umbrosus, D. frauenfeldi and D. caudatus trapped were from a village, on a vegetable farm for D. cucurbitae, and D. occipitalis was only caught in a forest. Analysis showed that for each species of Dacus the difference between ecosystems was highly significant. The few examples caught in grassland were probably migrants.

TL;DR: In this article, X-ray diffraction patterns of a number of commercial bleaching earths indicate that they consist mainly of montmorillonite mixed with smaller amount of kaolinites as well as mica, quartz and cristobalite.
Abstract: X-ray diffraction patterns of a number of commercial bleaching earths indicate that they consist mainly of montmorillonite mixed with smaller amount of kaolinites as well as mica, quartz and cristobalite. The active sites in these earths for the adsorption of β-carotene are identified through ion exchange and found to be the protonic sites and some metallic ions. The efficiencies of the various cations in imparting activities to the earths are found to be in the order Mg2+ > Fe3+ > H+ > Ca2+ > Na+. For Fe3+ and H+ exchanged clays, the activity was found to be linear function of the concentration of these ions. The high activities of Mg2+ and Ca2+ exchanged clays are discussed.

TL;DR: In this paper, the activity and kinetic properties of urease in several Malaysian soils were examined and the values for K m and V max of the soils computed according to the Hanes equation were in general agreement with other reports as far as magnitudes were concerned.
Abstract: The activity and kinetic properties of urease in several Malaysian soils were examined. The values for K m and V max of the soils computed according to the Hanes equation were in general agreement with other reports as far as magnitudes were concerned. A significant correlation between K m and V max was also obtained. The urease activity of the soils was variable, and it was noted that expression of the activity as the time required to hydrolyze half of the applied urea has limited use in soils of low activity. In all soils studied, inhibition of urease activity was effectively achieved using Ag + , while Cu 2+ was only effective in two soils, and marginally effective in the other two soils. Urease inhibitors have potential applications in reducing volatilization losses of ammonia derived from urea applied to soils.

TL;DR: In this paper, a scale-free method for testing the shape parameter β of the Weibull distribution has been proposed, which is based on the extremal quotient, and possesses a monotone property which makes it possible for rejection earlier than the last planned observation.
Abstract: A procedure is proposed in this paper for testing the shape parameter, β of the Weibull distribution. The test statistic which is based on the extremal quotient, possesses a monotone property which makes it possible for rejection earlier than the last planned observation of the null hypothesis,H0: β=β0 when the alternative hypothesis isHa: β β0. The test being scale-free, does not require the scale parameter to be known.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined spirit possession in women of traditional societies and syncretic subcultures as a symptom of personal maladjustment and as a form of social protest based on psychosocial, role-related pressures.
Abstract: The paper seeks to examine spirit possession in women of traditional societies and syncretic subcultures as a symptom of personal maladjustment and as a form of social protest based on psychosocial, role-related pressures. This is accomplished by consideration of predisposing, precipitating and reactive factors involved in the possession reaction. Analysis of four case histories and availability of cross-cultural data indicate that the precipitation of pathological possession is rooted in the oppressive nature of the female role and that stresses experienced by traditional women are not unlike the difficulties of women in developed, industrialized societies. The possession response, however, is colored by traditional beliefs and superstitions; consequently, hysterical and anxiety symptoms are interpreted in light of the magical model of disease with the pathological reaction attributed to possession by malevolent spirits.

TL;DR: Measurements were made on blood pH, .Pco2 and Po2 in mice after a single injection and following five weeks continuous clonidine hydrochloride treatment.
Abstract: SUMMARY Measurements were made on blood pH, .Pco2 and Po2 in mice after a single injection and following five weeks continuous clonidine hydrochloride treatment. A single injection of clonidine hydrochloride exerts no effect on blood pH, Pco2 and Po2 but five weeks of continuous clonidine hydrochloride treatment lowers the blood pH and Pco2 and raises blood Po2, suggesting acidosis has taken place. The acidosis may be attributed to rebound hypertension as a result of withdrawal of clonidine treatment.

TL;DR: Norberg-Schulz as discussed by the authors argued that human identification with a place presupposes that places have "character", attributes which distinguish each place from any other and lend to it its unique "presence" or "genius loci".
Abstract: Throughout the writings of Norberg-Schulz (1980) there runs the unquestioned assumption that architecture has an identifiable “essence,” the understanding of which is essential both to the discourse and practice of architecture. For Norberg-Schulz, this “essence” of architecture is equivalent to Heidegger’s concept of “dwelling” (Heidegger 1971), which may be understood as an active process of human engagement with the earthly landscape. The relation of man to place is not simply that of being able to orientate oneself in one’s surroundings, as Lynch (1960) implies, but has to do with a much deeper process of identification, by which Norberg-Schulz means “to become ‘friends’ with a particular environment” (Norgerg-Schulz 1980). In turn, human identification with a place presupposes that places have “character,” that is, attributes which distinguish each place from any other and lend to it its unique “presence” or “genius loci.” The loss of such character, as evidenced in contemporary forms of architecture and urban developmant “has disastrous consequences for man and for society, and we are now beginning to be aware of these effects.” Following Heidegger’s train of thought, Norberg-Schulz thus links the very idea of what it is to be a human being to the act of dwelling, or “resting in a place”: “Human identity presupposes the identity of place.” The “essence” of architecture is defined accordingly: The basic act of architecture is therefore to understand the “vocation” of the place. In this way we protect the earth and become ourselves part of comprehensive totality. What is here advocated is not some kind of environmental determinism. We only recognize that man is an integral part of the environment, and that it can only lead to human alienation and environmental disruption if he forgets that, to belong to a place means to have an existential foothold in a concrete everyday sense.” (Norberg-Schulz 1980)

TL;DR: In this paper, an obvious model for a stratified population when auxiliary information regarding variate values is available, is the one way analysis of covariance model with unequal variances and the problem of estimating the finite population mean is considered.
Abstract: Smith (1976,J. R. Statist. Soc., A,139, 183–204) has argued that survey statisticians should attempt to model finite population structures in the same way that statisticians in other disciplines have to provide models of finite or infinite populations. Following this argument, we suggest in this paper that an obvious model for a stratified population when auxiliary information regarding variate values is available, is the one way analysis of covariance model with unequal variances and we consider the problem of estimating the finite population mean. Finally a possible extension of this result is discussed.
