TL;DR: The authors found a significant effect of ESR locus on NW (P≤0.01) in LW, however, they observed a negative effect of BB genotype on the trait, and positive associations of B allele with TNB, NBA, NW were found but the differences were not confirmed statistically.
Abstract: . We investigated the effect of the estrogen receptor (ESR) and ryanodine receptor (RYR1) genes on total number of born (TNB), number of born alive (NBA) and number of weaned (NW) piglets in Large White (LW), White Meaty (WM) and Landrace (L) sows from six Slovak breeding farms. We found a significant effect of ESR locus on NW (P≤0.01) in LW, however, we observed a negative effect of BB genotype on the trait. In WM, positive associations of B allele with TNB, NBA, NW were found but the differences were not confirmed statistically. A highly significant effect (P≤0.01) of ESR locus on TNB (+0.62±0.18 pigs per copy of B allele), NBA (+0.65±0.18) and NW (+0.51±0.16) was identified in L breed. With RYR1 gene we found significantly higher TNB and NBA in heterozygous WM sows (+1.01±0.36 in TNB; +0.87±0.32 in NBA; P≤0.01). NBA was also significant in LW (+0.41±0.19; P≤0.05).

TL;DR: Because these youth appear to overestimate the prevalence of smoking by schoolmates, the use of a norms-correction strategy may have potential merit in smoking prevention efforts targeting these adolescents.
Abstract: Studies investigating smoking behavior among adolescents living in post-communistic Central-European countries are sparse. This study focused on the relationship between cigarette smoking, certain friendship factors, and social norm perceptions among 1,886 Central-Eastern European adolescents from high schools in Hungary, Slovakia, Czech Republic, and Romania. Smoking behavior was related to having friends who smoke, ease or difficulty making new friends, time spent with friends after school and during evenings, and estimations of the prevalence of smoking by schoolmates. Because these youth appear to overestimate the prevalence of smoking by schoolmates, the use of a norms-correction strategy may have potential merit in smoking prevention efforts targeting these adolescents. Smoking prevention and reduction are critical issues for Central-Eastern European youth because they appear to smoke cigarettes at a high rate.

TL;DR: The hind foot length was the least variable characteristic, which can be considered as the most stable taxonomic somatic characteristic of shrews, which declined with increasing continentality, but tail length gradually increased in the direction west — east at the highland level.
Abstract: The morphometrics and reproduction of shrews (Sorex araneus, S. minutus, S. alpinus) was studied in Slovakia. Significant differences in weight, body length and tail length were recorded in adult and subadult shrews. Adult individuals and males had higher mean somatometric values (apart from tail length of subadults). The hind foot length was the least variable characteristic, which can be considered as the most stable taxonomic somatic characteristic of shrews. Weight and body length varied considerably. Values of somatic characteristics in S. araneus and S. minutus increased with increasing altitude, apart from hind foot length in S. araneus, which decreased with increasing altitude. The values of somatic characteristics declined with increasing continentality, but tail length gradually increased in the direction west — east at the highland level. Sorex minutus was characterized by the greatest reproductive activity (length of reproductive cycle April–October, average number of embryos 6.97). The lowest reproductive activity was observed in S. alpinus (average number of embryos 5.72). The mating season of S. araneus began at the end of March and ended in August with an average number of embryos of 6.12.

TL;DR: This article analyzed the stylistic means of French novelist Louis- Ferdinand Celine, one of the first writers who introduced the need to place spoken language into written text, and analyzed the double linguistic distinction between the pho- netic code and the graphic code and between spoken code and written code.
Abstract: The study analyses innovative stylistic means of French novelist Louis- Ferdinand Celine—one of the first writers who has introduced the need to place spoken language into written text. The author treats theoretical paradox of spoken French in its written form, analysing the double linguistic distinction between the pho- netic code and the graphic code and between the spoken code and the written code. Celin's style, which modifies the rules of standard French, is characterised by the ar- gotic and vulgarised narration, which decomposes traditional syntax. The use of new means of expression is effectuated at several levels—at the vocabulary level (argot, neologisms, derivation), at the syntagma level (repetition, anticipation, segmentation), and at the sentencelevel (the use of juxtapositionand coordinationon detrimentto the subordination). The verb forms typical of colloquial style or, on the contrary, forms whichare used intraditional narrationare alsointroduced. The paper dealswith Celin's first novel Voyage au bout de la nuit, where the narration is still traditional, the narrator is fictitious, his name is different from the author's, the narration is linear, the novel is divided into chapters and the story has a beginning and an end. The search for the new means of expression is therefore reflected exclusively at the level of language and style.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors discuss the process of transformation in Slovak literature and present multiculturalism as one of the latest Euro-Slovak tendencies in fiction, according to which the works of the younger generation of authors are constructed on authentic feeling and subjective experience.
Abstract: Based on the social and cultural changes in 1989, the paper discusses the process of transformation in Slovak literature. Based on the former three areas of literary production, the article offers a preview of the crucial trends and categories of contemporary literary production. It identifies and specifies the nature and vehicles of expression used in Slovak post-modern narration. It also presents multiculturalism as one of the latest Euro-Slovak tendencies in fiction. Ethical and religious dimensions are an inseparable part of renewed literary production in Slovakia. The production is classified also according to the dominance of empathy and/or subjectivity in a particular text. The latest trends are based either on parody, irony, and pla(y)giarism, or on religious values. The works of the youngest generation of authors are constructed on authentic feeling and subjective experience.
