Berezin-Toeplitz quantization of compact Kähler manifolds

Abstract: In this lecture results are reviewed obtained by the author together with Martin Bordemann and Eckhard Meinrenken on the Berezin-Toeplitz quantization of compact Kaehler manifolds. Using global Toeplitz operators, approximation results for the quantum operators are shown. From them it follows that the quantum operators have the correct classical limit. A star product deformation of the Poisson algebra is constructed.

Dewey in Europe: A Case Study on the International Dimensions of the Turn-of-the-Century Educational Reform

Abstract: This article concerns the turn-of-the-century educational reform in North America and Europe It documents the influence of European educational thought and practice on the work of John Dewey and the influence of Dewey's ideas on European education in three different countries: Turkey, Russia, and the Netherlands Dewey's case suggests that resemblances between educational reform in Europe and North America can partly be explained by the existence of a common theoretical background Dewey's case further makes clear that no general statements about the influence of Progressivism can be made but that a context-specific approach is needed

The Dirac oscillator of arbitrary spin

Abstract: The problem of a relativistic particle with an arbitrary spin has had an old and distinguished history, particularly if the particle is free or interacting with an electromagnetic field. Recently a new type of interaction, denoted as the Dirac oscillator, has been introduced, first for a particle of spin and later for spins 0 and 1, and it has suggested a possible generalization to arbitrary spin. Following a procedure originally developed for a system of n particles with spin with a Dirac oscillator interaction, we have derived a single particle equation with spins in the range or 0 and through a symmetric representation of the permutation group restricted it to spin . We have solved the resulting equation explicitly by reducing it to an algebraic one in the energy E, whose coefficients depend on the number of quanta N, the total angular momentum j and the frequency of the oscillator. Properties of the energy spectra will be discussed for spins , 1, .

Deformation quantization of compact Kähler manifolds via Berezin-Toeplitz operators

Abstract: This talk reports on results on the deformation quantization (star products) and on approximative operator representations for quantizable compact Kahler manifolds obtained via Berezin-Toeplitz operators. After choosing a holomorphic quantum line bundle the Berezin-Toeplitz operator associated to a differentiable function on the manifold is the operator defined by multiplying global holomorphic sections of the line bundle with this function and projecting the differentiable section back to the subspace of holomorphic sections. The results were obtained in (respectively based on) joint work with M. Bordemann and E. Meinrenken.

Competition in Multi-Characteristics Spaces: Hotelling was Almost Right

Abstract: Lancasterian models of product differentiation typically assume a one-dimensional characteristics space. We show that standard results on prices and locations no longer hold when firms compete in a multi-characteristics space. In the location game with n characteristics, firms choose to maximize differentiation in the dominant characteristic and to minimize differentiation in the others when the salience coefficient of the former is sufficiently large. Thus, the principle of minimum differentiation holds for all but one characteristic. Furthermore, prices do not necessarily fall when products get closer in the characteristics space because price competition is relaxed when products are differentiated enough in the dominant characteristic.

Neuropeptides in dural fine sensory nerve endings--involvement in neurogenic inflammation?

Abstract: Publisher Summary This chapter focuses on the neuropeptides in dural fine sensory nerve endings. The sensory neuropeptides that have attracted most interest are substance P (SP) and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP). They are located in unmyelinated or thinly myelinated nerve fibers, where they seem to participate in the transmission and processing of nociceptive information and in the efferent effects of fine afferents. Evidence for their involvement in pain mechanisms came from animal experiments in which noxious stimuli were applied to the peripheral endings of primary sensory nerve fibers. These peripheral reactions may be interpreted in context with neurogenic inflammation as adaptive responses. They promote rapid increase in tissue substrates, activate cells for local defense and stimulate the circulation to dilute invading toxins. The chapter discusses the existence of SP- and CGRP-containing primary afferents in the dura mater, the release of neuropeptides from the afferents upon specific stimuli, and the binding of neuropeptides to specific receptors, located on tissue structures involved in neurogenic inflammation.

Selegiline stimulates biosynthesis of cytokines interleukin-1 beta and interleukin-6.

Abstract: Several lines of evidence indicate an immune-mediated pathophysiology of Parkinson's disease (PD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). In clinical studies the monoamine oxidase-B inhibitor Selegiline appears to slow the progression of neurological deficits in PD and the cognitive decline in AD. The immune response to bacterial or viral infection and in chronic inflammatory processes is stimulated by an increased synthesis of the cytokines interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta) and subsequently interleukin-6 (IL-6). We investigated the influence of Selegiline on the synthesis of IL-1 beta and IL-6 in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from healthy blood donors cultured with or without Selegiline (10(-8)M, 10(-9)M or 10(-10)M) in a humidified atmosphere (7% CO2). Treatment of cultured PBMC with Selegiline significantly increased synthesis of both cytokines. The effect of Selegiline on cytokine biosynthesis may contribute to its putative neuroprotective properties.

Erklärungsmuster fremdenfeindlicher Gewalt im empirischen Test

Abstract: Der steile Anstieg fremdenfeindlicher Straf- und Gewalttaten seit 1991 hat eine intensive Diskussion um die Wiederkehr von Rassismus, Chauvinismus und Rechtsextremismus ausgelost. Oftmals ging es dabei freilich mehr um neue Munition fur alte Fronten als um die Beantwortung der offenen Fragen sowie der politisch-praktischen Herausforderung, die diese Entwicklung fur unsere Gesellschaft darstellt. Erfolgreiche Praventionspolitik ist jedoch auf eine sorgfaltige Ursachenanalyse angewiesen. Da die Diskussion jedoch lange Zeit (und z.T. auch heute noch) unabhangig von den wissenschaftlichen Ergebnissen und empirischen Daten gefuhrt wurde, hat eine Trierer Forschungsgruppe1 — unterstutzt zunachst von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft, vom Jugendministerium und schlieslich vom Innenministerium a) reprasentative Bevolkerungsumfragen darauf hin analysiert, ob sich in den achtziger und fruhen neunziger Jahren Veranderungen in den Einstellungen zu Auslandern andeuten; b) bei 6.400 Tatverdachtigen (wegen fremdenfeindlicher Straftaten) anhand der Polizeiakten die sozialen Hintergrunde und Tatkontexte ermittelt; c) Gerichtsakten uber 154 Tater darauf hin uberpruft, inwieweit darin Hinweise auf familiale, schulische oder berufliche Probleme bei den Gewalttatern aufscheinen; d) die Entstehungs-, Eskalations- und ‚Erfolgs‘bedingungen fremdenfeindlicher Gewalt in ihrem historischen Ablauf an Hand von offiziellen Dokumentationen und Berichten, Pressedarstellungen und Interviews rekonstruiert. Die Ergebnisse dieser Analysen sind eindeutiger, als es ursprunglich zu vermuten war, und konnten dazu beitragen, aus dem Ritual der Schuldzuweisungen herauszukommen und Praventionspolitik in Angriff zu nehmen. Denn so viel durfte feststehen: Das Problem ist nicht bewaltigt, auch wenn die Zahl der Gewalttaten mittlerweile wieder gesunken ist (Willems u.a. 1994: 12–19).

Gewalt und Fremdenfeindlichkeit in der Erfahrung von Schülern und Lehrern

Abstract: Die derzeitige intensive Diskussion uber Gewalt in unserer Gesellschaft, die vor allem durch die Angriffe jugendlicher Gruppen und fremdenfeindlicher sowie rechtsextremistischer Cliquen auf Asylbewerber und Auslander ausgelost wurde, hat auch die Schulen wieder ins Zentrum der offentlichen Aufmerksamkeit geruckt. Sie sind zum einen dem Vorwurf ausgesetzt, bei der Vermittlung gesellschaftlicher Werte und zivilisatorischer Tugenden versagt zu haben oder werden gar direkt als Verursacher der rechten Gewalt von Jugendlichen angeklagt nach der Formel: „Linke Lehrer erzeugen rechte Schuler“. Sie werden zum anderen aber auch mit der Forderung konfrontiert, sich ihrer erzieherischen Aufgabe und Verantwortung fur die Gesellschaft wieder starker bewust zu werden. Zunehmend wird von den Schulen erwartet, jene sozialisatorischen Defizite von Kindern und Jugendlichen auszugleichen und zu beheben, die durch die Veranderungen von familialen Strukturen und Sozialisationsbedingungen verursacht seien.

L'émergence d'un droit constitutionnel pour l'Europe Modes de formation et sources d'inspiration de la constitution des Communautés et de l'Union européenne

Abstract: L'objet principal de la these est d'apporter une contribution a l'etude du droit des communautes et de l'Union europeenne selon une approche "constitutionnaliste", en faisant apparaitre le caractere constitutionnel du droit communautaire originaire a travers l'etude de ses sources formelles et materielles, tout en tenant compte du fait que le processus de formation du droit constitutionnel communautaire s'insere dans une evolution plus vaste d'emergence d'un droit constitutionnel europeen, evolution dans laquelle les constitutions des etats europeens et la convention europeenne des droits de l'homme sont aussi impliquees. On abordera successivement les questions de l'existence, de la formation et du contenu de la charte constitutionnelle communautaire. La partie liminaire vise a apporter une reponse a la question de savoir si l'on peut legitimement parler d'une constitution europeenne. Apres avoir defini la notion de constitution on s'interroge donc sur la pertinence d'une transposition de la notion de constitution hors du cadre etatique. La premiere partie de la these, consacree a l'analyse des sources formelles du droit constitutionnel communautaire, a pour premier but de faire comprendre comment la constitution communautaire actuelle a pu s'elever sur la base des traites fondateurs des communautes europeennes. On s'y interroge aussi sur les problemes juridiques souleves par l'elaboration d'une constitution de l'union europeenne par la voie d'un acte constituant. La deuxieme partie de la these, portant sur les sources materielles du droit constitutionnel des communautes et de l'Union europeenne, a pour objectif de mettre en evidence ses sources d'inspiration a l'aide d'une presentation des principes constitutionnels les plus significatifs. Apres avoir dresse un inventaire de ce qui fait partie du corpus constitutionnel de l'Union europeenne, on se limite de ce fait a un examen des valeurs fondamentales et des principes structurels qui caracterisent l'Union europeenne.

L'agglomération transfrontalière du Pôle Européen de Développement (P.E.D.) Longwy-Rodange-Athus. Expériences et perspectives d'un programme trinational de restructuration économique

Abstract: Der grenziiberschreitende Verdichtungsraum des Pole Europeen de Developpement (P.E.D.) Longwy-Rodange-Athus — Erfahrungen und Perspektiven eines trinationalen Programms zur wirtschaftlichen Restrukturierung — Der Pole Europeen de Developpement wurde als trinationales Programm zur wirtschaftlichen Restrukturierung eines grenzuberschreitenden Stahlindustriereviers eingerichtet. Bis heute blieb dieses Konzept einmalig in der Geschichte der Europaischen Union. Trotz seiner ersten wirtschaftlichen Erfolge leidet das Projekt unter einer einseitigen Ausrichtung, die stadtebauliche, okologische und soziale Aspekte vernachlassigt. Nach einer Phase der Reflexion zielt das Nachfolgeprojekt Agglomeration Transfrontaliere nun darauf ab, die Rolle der kommunalen Akteure zu starken, um tatsachlich grenzuberschreitende Strukturen zu schaffen und die Versaumnisse der ersten Phase des P.E.D. zu kompensieren.
