TL;DR: In this paper, the authors studied the existence of nontrivial solutions for the boundary value problem, where λ is a real parameter and Δ is the relative Laplace-Beltrami operator.
Abstract: In this paper we study the existence of nontrivial solutions for the boundary value problem { − Δ u − λ u − u | u | 2 ⁎ − 2 = 0 in Ω u = 0 on ∂ Ω when Ω⊂Rn is a bounded domain, n ⩾ 3, 2 ⁎ = 2 n ( n − 2 ) is the critical exponent for the Sobolev embedding H 0 1 ( Ω ) ⊂ L p ( Ω ) , λ is a real parameter. We prove that there is bifurcation from any eigenvalue λj of − Δ and we give an estimate of the left neighbourhoods ] λ j ⁎ , λj] of λj, j∈N, in which the bifurcation branch can be extended. Moreover we prove that, if λ ∈ ] λ j ⁎ , λj[, the number of nontrivial solutions is at least twice the multiplicity of λj. The same kind of results holds also when Ω is a compact Riemannian manifold of dimension n ⩾ 3, without boundary and Δ is the relative Laplace-Beltrami operator.

TL;DR: In this article, the concentration of pentanol in the ternary system was analyzed using a mass-action model for the alcohol distribution in micellar solutions and the partial molar volume of alcohol bound to the micelles and the ratio between the binding constant and the aggregation number of the surfactant were calculated.
Abstract: Densities of the ternary system water-sodium dodecylsulfate (NaDS)-pentanol and of the binary systems butanol-octane and pentanol-octane were measured at 15, 25, and 35 °C. The apparent molar volume of pentanol in the ternary system was analyzed using a mass-action model for the alcohol distribution in micellar solutions. The partial molar volume of alcohol bound to the micelles and the ratio between the binding constant and the aggregation number of the surfactant are calculated. The partial molar volume binding constant, is discussed in terms of solubilization sites of the alcohol in the micelles whereas the binding constant is compared with that derived from the Nernstian partition constant previously obtained calorimetrically. From the binding constant and Poisson statistics the distribution function of the number of alcohol molecules per micelle, as a function of the concentration of alcohol and of surfactant, are calculated. The derived distribution functions show that a large amount of alcohol can be solubilized in the micelles so that alcoholic mixed micelles can be predicted when the concentration of pentanol is greater than that of NaDS.

TL;DR: The results support the view that there is an occupational risk factor related to a rural environment in blood donors from Palermo and Mussomeli and Ustica that is related to Rickettsia conorii.
Abstract: 963 sera from contacts, persons from various localities, and blood donors were examined with a commercially produced kit for micro-immunofluorescence for the presence of antibodies to Rickettsia conorii . 10·6% of sera were serologically positive. The higher rates of positivity were observed in sera of contacts (19%) and persons from Mussomeli (20%) and Ustica (18·4%), the lower rates in blood donors from Palermo (3·5%). These results support the view that there is an occupational risk factor related to a rural environment.

TL;DR: The data point to the occurrence of different immunoregulatory abnormalities in newly diagnosed Type 1 diabetic patients, especially in OKT8+ and OKT4+ cells, further proof of the role of cellular autoimmunity in the pathogenesis of the early phases of Type 1 diabetes.
Abstract: Humoral and cell-mediated disorders in Type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes suggest that an imbalance of immunoregulatory T-cell subsets exists In 23 newly diagnosed (onset < 3 months) and 21 long-standing Type 1 diabetic patients, T lymphocyte subsets were analyzed using monoclonal antibodies (OKT3, OKT4, OKT8, OKM1) The newly diagnosed patients showed a reduction with a significant difference from healthy controls in total T cells (OKT3+: 581 ±85% versus 707±80%), helper/inducer cells (OKT4+: 338 ±70% versus 471 ±83%), suppressor/cytotoxic cells (OKT8+: 185±73% versus 32 ± 68%) and monocytes (OKM1+: 115±38% versus 199±52%) (p< 0001) The long-standing diabetic patients also revealed a low number of immunoregulatory T cells compared with control subjects, although to a lesser extent (p< 001–005) The helper/suppressor ratio (OKT4+/OKT8+) was higher in newly diagnosed patients than in control subjects (22±13 versus 15±03; p< 002) When compared with 95% tolerance limits in the control subjects, the reduction of OKT8+ cells in the newly diagnosed diabetic patients appeared more marked: the mean (185%) coincided with the lower limit of normal subjects (183%) Ten of the newly diagnosed Type 1 diabetic patients had a value below the normal lower limit Our data point to the occurrence of different immunoregulatory abnormalities in newly diagnosed Type 1 diabetic patients, especially in OKT8+ and OKT4+ cells The imbalance in T lymphocyte subsets is further proof of the role of cellular autoimmunity in the pathogenesis of the early phases of Type 1 diabetes

TL;DR: Lip cancer was significantly associated with fair, brown, or red hair, and association with tobacco smoking was not significant after adjustment for socioeconomic status; risk increased exponentially with the number of ethnic characteristics of northern European populations.
Abstract: Incidence rates of lip cancer in males in Ragusa (Sicily) are amongst the highest in Europe [age-standardized rate (world) for 1980-82: 7.5 per 100,000]. A case-control study was conducted on 53 male cases and 106 controls matched for sex, age (+/- 2 1/2 years), residence and hospital from which cases had been drawn. Individual interviews were carried out for the evaluation of ethnic, environmental, pathologic and occupational risk factors. Lip cancer was significantly associated with: fair, brown, or red hair (relative odds = 2.3), blue eyes (r.o. = 5.3), fair skin (r.o. = 8.0), sensitivity to sunburns (r.o. = 4.1), working outdoors (r.o. = 4.9), coexistence of non-specific lesions of exposed body parts (r.o. = 12,2), low socioeconomic status (r.o. = 15.8), farming (r.o. = 2.6) and working in greenhouses (r.o. = 12.0). Recall of recurrent Herpes labialis was not significantly associated; also association with tobacco smoking was not significant after adjustment for socioeconomic status. Risk increased exponentially with the number of ethnic characteristics of northern European populations.

Abstract: Dynamic shakedown of discrete elastic-perfectly plastic structures under a specified load history is studied using the dynamic characteristics of the structure provided by modal analysis. Several statical and kinematical theorems are presented, including lower and upper bound theorems for the minimum adaptation time of the structure. In the formulation of the kinematical theorems a crucial role is played by the appropriate definition of ≪admissible plastic strain cycle≫.

TL;DR: In this article, a Reducing Capacity (RC) monitoring unit was installed at Soffione, the most active fumarole in the Solfatara system, and the measured CH4 content at an extimated depth of 3.5 km.
Abstract: Geochemical surveillance of the Phlegraean Fields area has been intensified since 1983, in response to the increased uplift rate (brady-seismic activity). Fumarolic gases from Solfatara (Pozzuoli) were sampled and analyzed monthly. A Reducing Capacity (RC) monitoring unit was installed at Soffione, the most active fumarole in the Solfatara system. The preliminary analysis of the RC temporal variations suggest they are consistent with the rate of the seismic energy release. The composition of fumarolic gases indicates that the equilibrium temperature and pressure are higher than those of sampling. The observed variations in CH4 content are explained as an increase of pressure (from 1982 to the end of 1983) of about 70% at an extimated depth of 3–3.5 km. Finally, during 1983, there were no geochemical indications of both rising magma and significant accumulation of energy at shallow depth.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors measured the H2O, CO2 and H2S outputs at the Solfatara of Pozzuoli and a map of the exhaling areas has also been made.
Abstract: The H2O, CO2 and H2S outputs at the Solfatara of Pozzuoli have been measured and a map of the exhaling areas has also been made. The energy released at the surface by the fluids has been estimated to be 1019 ergs/day. The presence of aquifers at Phlegraean Fields increases the phreatic and phreatomagmatic explosion risk. Our results suggest that even if an uprising magma may interact with water at depth, an explosion could occur only at the shallow levels of a few hundred meters. Since the transfer of energy toward the surface is favoured by the presence of fractures, a detailed analysis of the deep fracture network would help to evaluate the risk levels of the various areas of Phlegraean Fields.

Abstract: We describe 5 adult women with severe hirsutism due to late onset 21-hydroxylase deficiency. Diagnosis was performed on the finding of high serum 17-hydroxyprogesterone (170HP) levels with a marked hyperresponse to an ACTH test. The endocrine study showed in most patients a gonadotropin behaviorsimilarto that observed inclassical polycystic ovary (PCO) syndrome. Prolactin levels were slightly increased in basal conditions and presented an exaggerated response to TRH stimulation.

TL;DR: It was concluded that the most accurate screening plain in cirrhotic patients suspected of having HCC with alpha‐fetoprotein values below 500 mg/ml would consist of ultrasonography followed, as clinically indicated, by ultrasonographic or laparoscopic guided biopsy.
Abstract: A total of 67 cirrhotic patients with clinically suspected neoplastic degeneration and low alpha-fetoprotein levels were assessed prospectively with ultrasound and gold (198Au) scintigraphy. Ultrasound showed space-occupying lesions in 22 of the 24 patients who had a final diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) (sensitivity, 95.8%) and excluded the presence of HCC in 37 of the 43 patients with cirrhosis only (specificity, 86.0%; efficiency, 90.8%). Scintigraphy demonstrated a cold defect in 22 of the 24 patients who had a final diagnosis of HCC (sensitivity, 95.8%) and excluded the presence of HCC in 22 of the 43 patients with cirrhosis only (specificity, 51.1%; efficiency, 69.8%). It was concluded that the most accurate screening plain in cirrhotic patients suspected of having HCC with alpha-fetoprotein values below 500 mg/ml would consist of ultrasonography followed, as clinically indicated, by ultrasonographic or laparoscopic guided biopsy.
