TL;DR: The galactosamine was consistently and significantly elevated in hypertrophic scars, indicating that the chondroitin sulfates were increased, and Dermatan sulfate was found to be elevated in both hypertrophic and nonhypertrophic scars.
Abstract: SummaryA study has been made of the glucosamine, galactosamine, hyaluronic acid and chondroitin sulfate composition of hypertrophic scars, nonhypertrophic scars and normal skin. The galactosamine was consistently and significantly elevated in hypertrophic scars, indicating that the chondroitin sulfates were increased. Dermatan sulfate was found to be elevated in both hypertrophic and nonhypertrophic scars. Chondroitin-4-sulfate was found in the hypertrophic scar in significant amounts; only traces of this mucopolysaccharide were found in nonhypertrophic scar and in normal skin.

TL;DR: Preincubation with sodium periodate (NaIO4), an oxidizing agent, induces blastogenesis comparable with that observed with phytohaemagglutinin (PHA).
Abstract: MANY mitogenic agents1–5 when added to lymphocytes in vitro bind to saccharide-containing sites on cell membranes and cause blast transformation and subsequent incorporation of DNA precursors. Recently it has been observed by Novogrodsky and Katchalski6, using rat lymph node cells and by Parker et al.7, using human peripheral blood cells, that preincubation with sodium periodate (NaIO4), an oxidizing agent, induces blastogenesis comparable with that observed with phytohaemagglutinin (PHA).

TL;DR: Preipitations of the unstable Hb Sabine—even those not visible in vital staining—are easily seen in dark field microscopy of unfixed erythrocytes, especially with illumination from a mercury burner, and are reported on.
Abstract: HEINZ bodies—intraerythrocytic aggregations of denatured haemoglobin—are characteristically associated with the unstable haemoglobins (Hb), but not with other variants, such as Hbs S or C. In electron microscopy1, the initial Heinz body lesion consists of small precipitations of relatively unaltered haemoglobin. As these enlarge, coalesce and are fixed to erythrocyte membrane, they can be demonstrated by vital staining; eventually they lead to fragmentation of the cell. Precipitations of the unstable Hb Sabine—even those not visible in vital staining—are easily seen in dark field microscopy of unfixed erythrocytes, especially with illumination from a mercury burner2. We now report on such precipitations of Hbs S or C.

TL;DR: Measurements of 24‐hydroxycholesterol in human cortex, subcortical white matter, midbrain, pons, and cerebellum reveal trace‐level polar sterols in different parts of human brain by gas chromatographic means.
Abstract: 24-Hydroxycholesterol (cerebrosterol, cholest-5-ene-3β;, 24ξ-diol) occurs at low levels in human (Di Frisco, De Ruggieri and Ercoli, 1953; Ercoli and De Ruggieri, 1953a, 19536; Schubert, Rose and Burger, 1961; Van Lier and Smith, 1969, 1970), equine (Ercoli, Di Frisco and De Ruggieri, 1953a; Ercoli and De Ruggieri, 1953a, 1953b; Fieser, Huang and Bhattacharyya, 1957) and bovine (Richter and Dannenberg, 1969) brain tissue. Only one of two possible C-24 epimeric alcohols appears to occur in human brain (Van Lier and Smith, 1970) and the sterol may be regarded as a true endogenous trace-level sterol and not as an artifact of autoxidation derived during isolation and analysis. As a phase of our continuing interests in the presence of trace-level polar sterols in human tissues (Van Lier and Smith, 1967, 1969, 1970, 1971a; Smith and Van Lier, 1970), we sought to measure levels of 24-hydroxycholesterol in different parts of human brain by gas chromatographic means. The present report deals with our measurements of 24-hydroxycholesterol in human cortex, subcortical white matter, midbrain, pons, and cerebellum.

TL;DR: To label circulating blood mononuclear cells, adult male mice were given multiple injections of tritiated thymidine on the day prior to transection of the right sciatic nerve and the increase in number of labeled cells in the injured ganglia is attributed to infiltration of these cells.
Abstract: To label circulating blood mononuclear cells, adult male mice were given multiple injections of tritiated thymidine on the day prior to transection of the right sciatic nerve. These animals and uninjured controls that received a similar sequence of tritiated thymidine injections were sacrificed at intervals up to 64 days following the injury. In the dorsal root ganglia associated with the injured sciatic nerves there were more satellite cells per neuron at all time intervals after the first day than were in the ganglia from the uninjured nerves. The percentage of satellite cells that were labeled was also higher in the ganglia from the injured nerves at all times after injury except the first day. Because no tritiated thymidine should have been available at the time of injury or afterward to label cells proliferating in response to the injury, most of the labeled cells in these ganglia must have been cells labeled before the injury or must be derived from such cells through division. The only large population of labeled cells available to the ganglion was that of the labeled blood mononuclear leucocytes, and the increase in number of labeled cells in the injured ganglia is attributed to infiltration of these cells.

TL;DR: There was no evidence of a pronounced intrinsic shelf force in rabbit embryos under the conditions of this experiment.
Abstract: Rabbit embryos were removed from the uterus just prior to the time of palate closure, submerged in saline, and observed for evidence of shelf movement. When the tongue was displaced from between the palatine shelves the latter were not seen to move. After fixation and sectioning, the angle of the shelves to the sagittal plane was measured. This angle progressively approached that of embryos fixed in utero prior to shelf transposition when the tongue, or both tongue and lower jaw, were removed during manipulation in vivo. When the tongue was released it either returned to a position between the shelves or remained ventral to the shelves and forced them into a horizontal position. Thus there was no evidence of a pronounced intrinsic shelf force in rabbit embryos under the conditions of this experiment.

TL;DR: The drug choices of experts in clinical psychopharmacology were studied in terms of their responses to case reports containing brief narrative histories and detailed symptom and behavior descriptions to develop a model of the consensus decision behavior.
Abstract: The drug choices of experts in clinical psychopharmacology were studied in terms of their responses to case reports containing brief narrative histories and detailed symptom and behavior descriptions. The purposes of the study were to examine similarities and differences in the conceptions of appropriate indications for psychotherapeutic drugs and to develop a model of the consensus decision behavior. The several judges were found to behave similarly in their selections of drug treatments. Three major classes of drugs were consistently chosen for use with patients having distinctly different types of symptom profiles. Prototype clinical profiles representing the experts' conceptions of appropriate indications for antipsychotic, antianxiety and antidepressant drugs were derived, and a model of decision behavior representing the consensus of the judges was constructed. The study of clinical decision behavior in the manner of this investigation appears to have potential usefulness as another approach in clinical psychopharmacologic research.

TL;DR: During the fifth week of intrauterine development the spleen, cardiac septa, endocardial cushions, bronchial tree, and the segment connecting the subcardinal with the hepatic veins first appear, and a teratogenic insult at this time could result in the congenital spleen syndrome, with either no spleen or multiple spleens.
Abstract: Both the polysplenia and the asplenia syndromes are associated with congenital heart disease, positional anomalies, and abnormalities of the vena caval system. An angiographic and autopsy study of three patients with polysplenia revealed pulmonary atresia with common ventricle in one and atrioventricular communis with common atrium in two. Two of the three cases had interruption of the inferior vena cava. All three exhibited pulmonary isomerism and various degrees of situs inversus. Howell-Jolly bodies were demonstrated in one case. These findings are also components of the asplenia syndrome, except for pulmonary isomerism with two lobes bilaterally in polysplenia and three in asplenia. During the fifth week of intrauterine development the spleen, cardiac septa, endocardial cushions, bronchial tree, and the segment connecting the subcardinal with the hepatic veins first appear. Thus, a teratogenic insult at this time could result in the congenital spleen syndrome, with either no spleen or multiple spleens.

TL;DR: A rapid and simplified method for electrophoretic separation of glucose- 6-phosphate dehydrogenase variants in hemolysates is described, easily adapted for routine clinical use as well as screening large populations for G-6-PD variants.
Abstract: A rapid and simplified method for electrophoretic separation of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase variants in hemolysates is described. The method involves electrophoresis on hypergel cellulose acetate supported on a clear plastic (Mylar) base and Tris-EDTA borate buffer, pH 9.1. This inexpensive method takes only 15 min. for electrophoresis and is easily adapted for routine clinical use as well as screening large populations for G-6-PD variants.

TL;DR: Macrophages from concanavalin A-injected mice appeared activated because several in vitro parameters of activity were increased and Examination of macrophage activity from burned animals revealed a selective depression of macophage activity.
Abstract: Normal mice or mice burned 6 days previously were injected intraperitoneally with either saline or 50 μg of concanavalin A. Four days after the injection the peritoneal macrophages were collected and examined in vitro. Macrophages from concanavalin A-injected mice appeared activated because several in vitro parameters of activity were increased. Examination of macrophages from burned animals revealed a selective depression of macrophage activity.

TL;DR: Life-threatening manifestations of serum hyper-viscosity, hemorrhage in one patient, and bizarre neurological dysfunctions in the other responded to vigorous plasmapheresis.
Abstract: Serum hyperviscosity has been identified in a variety of pathological conditions, including macroglobulinemia (Waldenstrom), certain polyclonal gammopathies, and, rarely, multiple myeloma.1-9The hyper-viscosity syndrome1-4may lead to malaise, hemorrhagic diathesis, ocular disturbances, Meniere's syndrome, central nervous system dysfunction, or renal and cardiac abnormalities, depending upon the organs primarily affected. Plasmapheresis1,2,4,8,10-13may be the only effective therapy. This report describes two patients with IgG-K multiple myeloma and severe hyperviscosity syndrome. Life-threatening manifestations of serum hyper-viscosity, hemorrhage in one patient, and bizarre neurological dysfunctions in the other responded to vigorous plasmapheresis. Patient Summaries Patient 1. —A 54-year-old Negro woman was admitted in January 1969 with a three-month history of low back pain, anemia, and a bone marrow determination compatible with multiple myeloma. There was mild arteriolar narrowing in the ocular fundi, tenderness over the lower thoracic and lumbar spine, pain on truncal movement, and generalized hyperactive reflexes. Findings of

TL;DR: Porcine-type staphylococcus epidermidis strains in xenografts and on human burn wound grafting sites were similar in enzymatic activities on Tween 80, egg yolk, and tributyrin and elastase activity was not found in broth supernatant fluid of these bacteria.
Abstract: Staphylococcus epidermidis from porcine skin differed from human cutaneous S. epidermidis in that the former strains were principally of the Baird-Parker biotype III group. The porcine-type strains were more proteolytic on casein and gelatin than were human strains, which were primarily of biotype II. Porcine strains were also elastolytic. Using supernatant fluids of broth cultures, the biotype II strains, but not the type III strains, were lipolytic in action on triolein. Both types of staphylococci were similar in enzymatic activities on Tween 80, egg yolk, and tributyrin. Elastase activity was not found in broth supernatant fluid of these bacteria. The porcine strains were retarded or inhibited from growing in media at pH 5.5. Action on casein agar followed by demonstration of elastase activity were used as markers to detect the porcine S. epidermidis strains in xenografts and on human burn wound grafting sites.
