TL;DR: In this article, the origins and development of severe forms of erosion are traced in the communal villages located in a part of the dividing ridge between the Great Fish and Keiskamma rivers near Peddie town, Eastern Cape, South Africa.
Abstract: The origins and development of severe forms of erosion are traced in the communal villages located in a part of the dividing ridge between the Great Fish and Keiskamma rivers near Peddie town, Eastern Cape, South Africa. Progressive changes in land use and soil erosion distribution are reconstructed by analysing sequential aerial photographs of the area between 1938 and 1988. The distributions of the two phenomena are mapped and quantified at the different dates using PC ARC/INFO GIS. Observable soil erosion is confined to the communal lands at all the dates. Widespread abandonment of cultivated fields between 1965 and 1988 is noted as the most significant aspect of land use change in the communal lands. Gully initiation and intensification appear predominantly from the mid-1970s, coinciding with a period of extreme rainfall events. A close spatial correlation between abandoned cultivated land and severe gullies is identified. The research raises questions regarding both the cause for land abandonment and the reasons for its vulnerability to erosion. The observed land degradation is seen as the result of a complex interaction of social, economic and environmental factors which lead to land abandonment and its consequent erosion. TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigate some of the problems associated with the introduction and successful management of Employee Share Ownership Schemes (ESOPs) and empirically measure their impact on outcome variables such as organisational commitment.
Abstract: The objective of this study was to investigate some of the problems associated with the introduction and successful management of Employee Share Ownership Schemes (ESOPs). An ESOP is a participative management approach that appeals to some of the needs of both employees and management. The study considered how perceptions of ESOPs can be influenced and managed through managerial antecedents such as trust, empowerment and communication, and empirically measures their impact on outcome variables such as organisational commitment. The empirical findings revealed that if employees have positive perceptions of their firm’s ESOP (the value and benefit for them) they are more likely to be committed to their firm (organizational commitment) and organizational commitment has been shown to lead to a host of benefits for the firm.

TL;DR: The Heart of Redness by Zakes Mda as mentioned in this paper is a post-colonial/postmodem work that is redolent of its precursor in a titular sense, but also in its contingent and contiguous themes.
Abstract: Summary The publication of Zakes Mda's The Heart of Redness in 2000, almost a century after Conrad's Heart of Darkness, is not only redolent of its precursor in a titular sense, but also in its contingent and contiguous themes. Viewed from a postcolonial/postmodem perspective, both texts may be regarded as subversive offerings which disrupt colonial configurations of subjectivity. The degree to which Conrad and Mda succeed in deconstructing empire depends on the conditions of the historical production of their respective texts. Located within a modernist sensibility, Heart of Darkness, lacking the deictic in Mda's title, captures a historical moment of existential crisis in a manner that is simultaneously disruptive of colonial subjectivity and complicit with it, although in a characteristically ambiguous and inconclusive way. Set in the next millennium, The Heart of Redness continues the task of destabilising empire begun by Conrad, but this time through a revisionist reading of history, combining elemen...

TL;DR: In this article, an attempt is made to quantify the linkages between the formal and informal sectors, using the 1993 South African Input-Output Table, and the multiplier analysis confirms that certain sectors of the informal sector may be more responsive to changes in the final demand than the formal sector.
Abstract: The need to quantify the impact of the informal sector has thus far not received adequate attention so as to allow policy makers, informal sector enterprises and the formal sector to determine which specific areas of the economy should be further analysed for the purposes of ascertaining the linkages that exist between the formal and informal sectors. In this study, an attempt is made to quantify the linkages between the formal and informal sector, using the 1993 South African Input–Output Table. By disaggregating the formal and informal sectors, it has been possible to determine specific coefficients for both sectors. The “importexport” concept has been used to show how these sectors are interrelated. The multiplier analysis confirms that certain sectors of the informal sector may be more responsive to changes in the final demand than the formal sector.

TL;DR: In this paper, the historical development of literary space and character in the Sesotho novel can be placed in three broad categories: the space of travelling characters, the space for migrating characters and space as an abstraction.
Abstract: This article is about the history of literary space and character in selected Sesotho novels from 1907 to 1999. Our contention is that the historical development of literary space and character in the Sesotho novel can be placed in three broad categories: the space of travelling characters, the space of migrating characters and space as an abstraction

TL;DR: In this paper, the Dirichlet problem for a system of nonlinear elliptic equations of Leray-Lions type in a sequence of domains with fine-grained boundaries was studied and it was shown that the sequence of solutions converges in suitable topologies to the solution of a limit problem which contains an additional term of capacity type.
Abstract: We study the Dirichlet problem for a system of nonlinear elliptic equations of Leray–Lions type in a sequence of domains Ω (s) , s=1,2,…, with fine-grained boundaries. Under appropriate structure conditions on the system and the geometry of Ω (s) , we prove that the sequence of solutions of the problem converges in suitable topologies to the solution of a limit problem which contains an additional term of capacity type. We construct the limit problem.

TL;DR: This paper explored the problematic of racial, cultural and sexual identity in Conrad's first two novels, Almayer's Folly (1895) and An Outcast of the Islands (1896), treated dismissively by early critics of Conrad's work.
Abstract: Summary That Conrad continues to exert considerable influence on postcolonial discourse is unreservedly acknowledged today. Positing the notion of a “postcolonial space”, this article proposes to explore the problematic of racial, cultural and sexual identity in Conrad's first two novels, Almayer's Folly: A Story of an Eastern River (1895) and An Outcast of the Islands (1896), treated dismissively by early critics of Conrad's work. The concept of a postcolonial space functions on at least three levels in this project. Firstly, it denotes the literal and metaphoric odyssey of the author who writes back from the periphery to the centre, deconstructing empire in the process of representation. Secondly, it acts as a “space‐clearing gesture” (Appiah), or theoretical space to interrogate Conrad in the light of some of the most pertinent concerns of modern literary discourse, namely, issues of racial, ethnic and gender subjectivity. Lastly, it postulates an indeterminate, interstitial “third space” (Homi Bhabha)...

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors explore and describe the emerging social identities of Black South African first-year female students during focus group interviews, and suggest that the recommendations in line with these themes could facilitate identity construction and interaction within a multi-cultural society.
Abstract: Social identity refers to that part of the individual's self-concept which derives from the individual's knowledge that she belongs to certain social groups, together with the emotional and value significance attached to each membership. Changes in post-apartheid South Africa bring to question the influence thereof on the social identities of Black South African first-year female students. The impact of the changing social context on the process of identity construction is therefore considered. The aim of this qualitative research is to explore and descriptionbe the emerging social identities of Black South African first-year female students. Information rich participants were purposively selected. The question, ""How do you see yourself in your social relationships?"" was posed during focus group interviews. The audio-taped interviews were transcribed and analysed using Tesch's descriptionptive analysis technique. Centering on group memberships, which constitute the social identities of these participants, the following themes emerged from the data analysis: membership of a family, membership of a peer group, membership of first year female university students, membership of a particular cultural group and membership of society at large. The recommendations in line with these themes could facilitate identity construction and interaction within a multi-cultural society.

Abstract: We study the initial boundary value problem for the system of thermoelasticity in a sequence of perforated cylindrical domains Q T , s = 1, 2, . . . We prove that as s→∞, the solution of the problem converges in appropriate topologies to the solution of a limit initial boundary value problem of the same type but containing some additional terms which are expressed in terms of quantities related to the geometry of Q T . We give an explicit construction of that limit problem.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated matric-extensibility of the lower radical determined by a simple ring S in the universal class of associative rings and found necessary and sufficient conditions for S to be an atom in the lattice of hereditary matricextensible radicals.
Abstract: A radical α in the universal class of associative rings is called matric-extensible if α (R n) = (α (R))n for any ring R, and natural number n, where R n denotes the nxn matrix ring with entries from R. We investigate matric-extensibility of the lower radical determined by a simple ring S. This enables us to find necessary and sufficient conditions for the lower radical determined by S to be an atom in the lattice of hereditary matric-extensible radicals. We also show that this lattice has atoms which are not of this form. We then describe all atoms of the lattice, and show that it is atomic.
