Abstract: Facing the population as it grows old, the Alzheimer's disease (AD) appears as a problem of great impact to the family of the patient, overloading the relative caregiver. The purpose of this study was to understand the difficulties and necessities of the caregiver member of the family. A qualitative approach was accomplished to interview four members (relatives) of different families. The information analyzed through the Thematic Analysis revealed five categories: - I don't know what is happening yet that identified ignorance about the Alzheimer's disease (AD); -Taking over responsibility for everything that identified daily routine elements which represent an overburden of demands towards the relative caregiver; -Where are the others? That identified sharing the obligations with other people to be very difficult; -The spirituality help that identified the need for support brought by faith; -The valorous hero that identified the caregiver necessity to be recognized and valorized. The study showed the real daily life faced by the family of elder patients suffering from Alzheimer's disease (AD).

TL;DR: The subjects are shown to be involved in a group of feelings that involve retribution, love, satisfaction, fear, sadness, grieves, blame, anguish, insecurity, nervousness and impatience when they take care of their senior relatives.
Abstract: Aging is not an exclusive phenomenon of developed countries, but also of developing countries. Thus, the family must have knowledge and abilities to prevent or to minimize the effects of aging and also of pathologies as the CVA. The aim is to identify the relatives' feelings involved in taking care of the seniors and to analyze them according to the Theory of Social Representations. This descriptive, qualitative study was performed in the CVA seniors' homes, in Itabuna-BA , from July 2000 to July 2001. The data, collected through semi-structured interview, were analyzed according to the content analysis proposed by Bardin. The subjects are shown to be involved in a group of feelings that involve retribution, love, satisfaction, fear, sadness, grieves, blame, anguish, insecurity, nervousness and impatience when they take care of their senior relatives. Thus, we hope to contribute to the reflection on taking care of seniors in the home and the nursing engagement in the orientation and the relative's technical preparation for the home care.

TL;DR: In this paper, the content of phenolic compounds was determined using the Folin-Ciocalteu reagent and spectrophotometric reading, showing that these are the main antioxidant compounds to contribute to antioxidant activity of fruits examined in both tests.
Abstract: This study aimed to analyze the content of antioxidant compounds (ascorbic acid - AA, dehydroascorbic acid - DHA, total vitamin C, lycopene, β-carotene, β-cryptoxanthin and phenolic compounds) and to evaluate the antioxidant activity in guava, mango and papaya. The analysis of carotenoids and vitamin C was performed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The content of phenolic compounds was determined using the Folin-Ciocalteu reagent and spectrophotometric reading. Antioxidant activity was evaluated by testing the 2.2-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazil (DPPH•) and reducing power. ANOVA was used for data analysis (α = 0.05). The levels of antioxidant constituents differed among the three fruits; guava was the fruit that had the highest levels of phenolic compounds, total vitamin C, lycopene and DHA, and the highest values for antioxidant activity. There was a strong correlation between tests that evaluated antioxidant activity and the content of phenolic compounds, demonstrating that these are the main antioxidant compounds to contribute to antioxidant activity of fruits examined in both tests. It is important to encourage the use of fruits evaluated in this study, both at home and in food service establishments, in order to increase the intake of natural antioxidants by the population.

TL;DR: A database is provided regarding reference values of some physiological parameters in rats for use in experimental investigations and each laboratory should establish a database of reference values for their animals, according to diet, strain, sex and age for each species used.
Abstract: The present work was carried out to establish reference values for some physiological parameters (biochemical, hematological and urinary) in rats proceeding from the Central Biotery at the State University of Maringa, State of Parana. Normal male Wistar rats weighing 200-220 g were used. The hematological profile (total leukocytes, mononuclear and polymorphonuclear cells count), the clinic chemistry (aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, glucose, creatinine, alkaline phosphatase, acid phosphatase, urea, cholesterol, HDL-c, triglycerides, glucose tolerance) and urinary parameters (glucose and creatinine) were determined. Each laboratory should establish a database of reference values for their animals, according to diet, strain, sex and age for each species used. Thus, in this work, a database is provided regarding reference values of some physiological parameters in rats for use in experimental investigations

TL;DR: It is concluded that in spite of the high adhesion to hands washing from professionals who spend more time in ICU, they rarely use the correct technique and they did not do it before and after each procedure, evidencing the need to improve strategies that develop better understanding and training about this important act to control hospital infection.
Abstract: Study aiming to evaluate the technique, the moment and the adhesion of hands washing in a newborn ICU (intensive care unit) of a public hospital in Goiânia, state of Goias , Brazil. The sample was constituted by health care working staff in this unit, in the period of the study. Data were collected through direct observation using a check list. The results showed that 100% of the nursing, phonoaudiologyst and physiotherapy teams adhered to hands washing, however most of them use an incorrect technique. The professionals who showed larger adhesion were those who spend more time in ICU; nevertheless, the professionals who go to ICU to accomplish fast procedures as, blood collection and x-rays showed lower adhesion to hands washing. The technicians of the blood bank did not adhesion in this procedure. We conclude that in spite of the high adhesion to hands washing from professionals who spend more time in ICU, they rarely use the correct technique and they did not do it before and after each procedure, evidencing the need to improve strategies that develop better understanding and training about this important act to control hospital infection.
