TL;DR: In this paper, a study on Chinese IPTV audience demand was conducted based on uses and gratifications theory, and the authors explored how variables affect audience satisfaction and put forward feasible suggestions so as to improve audience satisfaction.
Abstract: This paper is a part of the thesis: A Study on Chinese IPTV audience. In this study, on the basis of uses and gratifications theory, starting from IPTV audience demand, the author endeavors to explore how variables affect audience satisfaction and put forward feasible suggestions so as to improve IPTV audience satisfaction. Some mass communications scholars have contended that the uses and gratifications are not a rigorous social science theory. In this article, I argue just the opposite, and any attempt to speculate on the future direction of mass communication theory must seriously include the uses and gratifications approach. And, I assert that the emergence of computer-mediated communication has revived the significance of uses and gratifications. Theoretically and practically, for U&G scholars, however, the basic questions remain the same. Why do people become involved in one particular type of mediated communication or another, and what gratifications do they receive from it? Although we are likely to continue using traditional tools and typologies to answer these questions, we must also be prepared to expand our current theoretical models of U&G to include concepts such as interactivity, demassification, hypertextuality, asynchroneity, and interpersonal aspects of mediated communication.

TL;DR: In this article, a Dutch version of the Communication Attitude Test for Preschool and Kindergarten Children who Stutter (KiddyCAT) was administered to a sample of 34 stuttering and 42 non-stuttering children between the age of three and six on two separate occasions.
Abstract: Research with the Communication Attitude Test for Preschool and Kindergarten Children who Stutter (KiddyCAT) in the United States, Italy and Poland has shown that, as a group, preschool and kindergarten children who stutter report, as of the age of three, already significantly more in the way of a negative attitude toward speech compared to their nonstuttering peers. In addition to its discriminative usefulness, the test’s validity has been established. What still needed to be determined was the KiddyCAT’s test-retest reliability, which was the aim of this investigation. In order to do so, a Dutch form of the KiddyCAT was administered to a sample of 34 stuttering and 42 nonstuttering children between the age of three and six on two separate occasions. After the initial testing, the children were retested a week to 12 days later. For both groups of participants, the scores of the first and second test administration correlated significantly, and the average scores did not differ from each other to a statistically significant extent. Thus, the repeated administration of the test revealed that the obtained first and second test scores were highly dependent and predictable from each other, and stable over time. As a side issue, it was, once again, confirmed that the scores of the children who do and do not stutter differed to a statistically significant extent.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors explore the collection of Etudes-Tableaux for piano solo by Sergei Rachmaninov (1873-1943) for the composer's unique manipulation of tonal areas as the basis of the Romantic concept of musical color.
Abstract: The intention of this study is to explore the collection of Etudes-Tableaux for piano solo by Sergei Rachmaninov (1873-1943) for the composer’s unique manipulation of tonal areas as the basis of the Romantic concept of musical color. What is the harmonic linkage that binds these etudes together internally as a set? In order to understand how Rachmaninov uses tonal areas and keys to invoke a special quality, let us first define what we mean by “color.” Traditionally, the term “color” refers to the texture and density of sonority, hence sonic color. In this case, the notion of “color” is related to the way tonal areas and keys play a significant role in the musical context by creating a desired atmosphere and an emotional quality. Intrinsic harmonic qualities of tonal regions are essential to Rachmaninov’s musical expression, according to which color areas may be seen as tableaux or sonic pictures. The term Tableau in Rachmaninov’s double title to signify a “picture” or “painting” also strongly reflects the composer’s use of musical color to suggest some kind of pictorial connotation.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a view into the civic mind of the greatest scholar of the Socratic school whose clinical and critical study of his society has continued to influence the modern thought.
Abstract: The notions of citizen and citizenship have been understood in different senses. When Barrack Obama was campaigning for his presidential election some years back, many conservatives peddled conflicting stories about his US citizenship. Some of the stories alleged that: his birth certificate was forged, he had dual citizenship in both the US and Britain and his country of birth was either Kenya or Indonesia, not Honolulu in Hawaii where he was actually born. Thus citizenship today denotes a link between a person and his state of birth with the rights to work, trade, reside and participate in the civic life of the community. Compared with the ancient world, citizenship, with regard to the state, conveyed deeper meaning. The ancient Greeks believed that the state is a creature of nature. By nature, man himself is a political animal, only capable of relating to humanity through his rights to participate in the affairs of the state. The state is a multifaceted entity, made up of citizens. Therefore, without the citizens, there is no state and without the state, no citizens. It then follows that the extent to which a state is good is proportional to the nature of its citizens and vice versa. For the Greeks, like Aristotle, the city-state should be the only proper setting for man’s greatest good (summum bonum). In view of the above and in the face contemporary realities in African states, it becomes imperative to look again at the roots of citizenship in order to understand both its historical and cultural context. Using Aristotle’s Politics as a template, this paper reviews the concept of citizenship by providing insights into the workings and attitudes of the citizens of the state of Athens, the city that served as “education to all Hellas”. Simultaneously, the paper presents a view into the civic mind of Aristotle, the greatest scholar of the Socratic school whose clinical and critical study of his society has continued to influence the modern thought.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors propose to change the double-track system into unitary track system, that means every citizen or farmer, whatever, so long as a Chinese would have the right to buy the land wherever is located in the rural area or in the urban area.
Abstract: In China, there are two tracks in the system of land ownership which are respectfully adaptable for urban citizens and for rural farmers. The ownership of rural land belongs to the village whereas the ownership of urban land belongs to the state, the government, in a sense. Therefore, based on the double-track system the land in urban can be sold to anyone for use but the land in the village can only be sold to the villagers, that means, the identities of buyers must be restrained, which is absolutely unfair and unjust to Chinese people. Therefore we need to change the double-track system into unitary-track system, that means every citizen or farmer, whatever, so long as a Chinese would have the right to buy the land wherever is located in the rural area or in the urban area. Everyone in China has the right to buy or to sell the land you have occupied lawfully. Cancellation of the special track to farmer’s land, making all lands belong to the state, controlled and supervised by state special departments, is not just imperative, but also feasible.

TL;DR: This paper explored the practice of insisting among people in the Palestinian society with respect to invitations and found that it is desirable and expected behavior which usually aims at highlighting in-group solidarity and revealing affiliation and hospitality.
Abstract: This paper explores the practice of insisting among people in the Palestinian society with respect to invitations. Even though insistence is perceived as a Face Threatening Act (FTA) in some societies (Brown & Levinson, 1987), the study shows that insistence in Palestinian society is desirable and expected behavior which usually aims at highlighting in-group solidarity and revealing affiliation and hospitality. Building mainly on studies in socio-pragmatics and some ethnographic work in communication, this study examines instances of insistence by means of which caring and hospitality are conveyed as markers of affiliation that recreate an interpersonal ideology of connectedness.

TL;DR: Wang et al. as mentioned in this paper conducted a literature review and comparative analysis on translation turns and definitions of translation at home and abroad, and concluded that although translation studies have seen a great number of turns, few scholars studied turns of translation systematically and showed interests in the influence of the translation definitions on the turns.
Abstract: With the development of such disciplines as linguistics, literature, sociology, anthropology, psychology and the rise of deconstructionism, post colonialism, feminism, more and more theories are applied to translation studies since the 1950s. The introduction of the theories from various kinds of thoughts and disciplines not only offers new perspectives for translation studies, but also brings new turns to it. As a specific turn of translation studies is one of the nuclear parts of translation studies, the study of translation and its turns attracts some scholars’ attentions. Abroad, the representative figures are Andre Lefevere, Susan Bassnett, Mary Snell-Hornby, Jeremy Munday, and Edwin Gentzler and so on. In China, there are few scholars such as Wang Ning, Lu Jun, Xie Tianzheng have ever studied on the turns in translation studies. Owing to the role translation definition plays in translation studies as well as the turns of the methodology, the aspects of the research background are viewed in this paper: the studies on the translation turns and the definitions of translation at home and abroad. Based on literature review and comparative analysis, the paper finally comes to the conclusion: although translation studies have seen a great number of turns, few scholars studied turns of translation systematically and showed interests in the influence of the translation definitions on the turns.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors argue that there is an aspect of ẹbọ as spirit of the divine obtainable only from a ritual action, which is fundamentally lacking in the concept of afu as spirit.
Abstract: Ẹbọ is divine Spirit It is the creative and sustaining principle with which the Supreme Being—Ọjọ creates and re-creates the Igala universe It is through ẹbọ as spirit, that Ọjọ reveals God’s self through the earth deity—anẹ, the ancestors—ibegwu and other nature spirits Therefore, as spiritual beings ẹbọ have autonomous iconic existence apart from its physical representation in Idols, effigies and artifacts—ode Through symbolic-ritual actions, ẹbọ makes Ọjọ accessible and beneficiary to the human through the ministry of healing and charisma In the 1920s, while recognizing the positive influence of the ẹbọ—ibegwu cult among the Igala, the Ajokodo Bible translated the spirit as ibegwu During the later missionary era, ẹbọ was diminished and demonized As a result, ẹbọ lost its spirit connotation and dangerously become a synonym of idol—ode On account of this pejorative association the 1970 translation of the Igala bible translated divine spirit as afu—wind, instead of ẹbọ—ibegwu The appreciation of ẹbọ as spirit has enormous implication for Igala Christian Pneumatology—science of the spirit and the Holy Spirit The conception of any authentic Igala Pnuematology must first confront the reality ẹbọ as divine spirits in the Igala spirit—world In essence, the appropriation of the word afu for spirit constitutes not only an escapism, but a monumental hindrance to theological inculturation In this essay, I argue that there is an aspect of ẹbọ as spirit of the divine obtainable only ritual action—worship, that is fundamentally lacking in the concept of afu as spirit In that, among the Igala, afu has no cult, or ritual significance My take in this essay can be stated as follows: unless we know what is spirit within the Igala world we cannot claim to know what the Holy Spirit is doing in the lives of the Igala Christian

Abstract: This discussion paper used a brief qualitative research report to understand the meaning of driving to older Americans from the perspective of a Korean researcher in order to increase cultural sensitivity. In-depth audio-recorded interviews were conducted with two older Americans by the Korean researcher. A conventional content analysis was performed, resulting in the conceptual model describing their meaning of driving according to life cycle. The Korean researcher’s auto-biographical journal, a coding scheme, peer debriefing, and thick description with quotes were utilized to ensure the trustworthiness of study findings. Participants described the meaning of driving throughout their lifespan as having four themes: Starting to be autonomous, Staying autonomous, Losing autonomy, and Regaining autonomy. Unlike older Koreans, having driving privileges greatly influences the feeling of autonomy among older Americans. In order to provide culturally-sensitive care for older Americans, it is imperative to recognize the loss of autonomy that results from losing their driving privileges.

Abstract: In the world today, there still exist the relationship of the mainstream and the marginal, the dominating and the dominated between the East and the West. And Foucault’s theory of Discourse offers us a powerful theoretical weapon to break the mentality of the binary opposition between the East and the West, for it not only exposes the deeper mechanism of the western mainstream discourse, but also proposes the strategy to subvert it, that is, to establish a kind of counter-discourse through education/knowledge, and in this way, to deconstruct the western dominant discourse and establish a dialogic and construcive relationship between the East and the West. So this article will apply Foucault’s theory of discourse to illustrate the relationship between the East and the West, and then give a comprehensive analysis of the function of Foucault’s theory of enlightening us to establish a positive East-West relation.
